Sir Daniel of Baker

Fantastic podcast guys! I loved every word Sir Danny said and agreed heartily with all of it. I could never understand why I was given grief for liking the Ramones and Supertramp in equal measure either? Give this man his own podcast but don't let him talk about football. Loved his story about Jagger getting his minder to pay for records. Reminded me of the time, mid 80's, when I managed a swanky mens boutique in Covent Garden that pandered to the rich and famous. Rod Stewart came in once and bought a shirt and got his ginormous bodyguard to pay for it. The bodyguard was carrying Rods credit card and replaced it in his own pocket after Rod had exhausted himself actually signing the receipt. Nob.

Quite a change from the other celebrity sales I recall. Iggy (platinum amex in the name James Osterburg), all of ZZ Top ('Man, we've gone hog wild in here!') and the Dame himself, another amex, plain ol' green this time but carrying the name 'David Jones'. All out for a spot of solo retail therapy, no bodyguards, no screaming fans and no 'don't look at me' attitude. All absolute gents and happy to chat with staff and in no hurry to be somewhere else.

But hey, enough of my yackin'....

Good story

I'd like to see more like this, given how much we know about the recording/performing/recreational habits of musicians. I'm trying to guess the shop. Jones? Paul Smith? Was Les Deux Zebres still going in the mid 80s? Brother was a little short-lived.

I like the detail that DB's Amex was the green one, while Iggy's was platinum.

Iggy was buying a christmas

Iggy was buying a christmas gift for a friend he was spending the holiday season with. I saw Bowie wearing the same very distinctive sweater on a TV interview about a month later. Then this was the time I kicked Boy George out for...

Don't get me started, I got a million of 'em!

It was PS by the way.

Iggy - always a complete gent

I worked at Virgin Records for donkeys years and had dealing with the Stones, Ferry, Van Morrison and Iggy, amongst others. Iggy was always a joy to work and with a real gent. Although I remember a particularly entertaining meeting with him at the Dorchester where Iggy entertained my good self and some executives from Endemol in his suite wearing a rather revealing dressing gown...

The rest of my stories are being reserved for my version of 'Kill Your Friends...

Ok you asked for it

Sade was buying a suit for her boyfriend and they were in the downstairs suit department trying stuff on. Two Japanese tourists descended the stairs and seeing what was happening, whipped out cameras and ran forward burbling excitedly. 'Oh God,' roared the lovely Sade, 'Can't they just leave me alone?' and dived for cover in an empty changing room. The two camera wielding Japanese gents rushed passed her and begged to have their photos taken with the sales assistant whose photograph they had seen in a magazine article about the owner of the shop (Sir Paul Smith). Sir Paul had about 200 stores in Japan at that time and was regularly mobbed in the streets and generally treated as a rock star when he was in the country. Pics taken, hands shaken and bows exchanged, the two tourists left the shop very happy with what had happened. It took a while for Sade to come out of the changing room.

Stay tuned for more tales from the frontlines of fashion!

I'm on a roll now...

One year, our staff Christmas dinner was held in a nearby Covent Garden restaurant, Smith's I think it was called but I might be mistaken. Our table was next to one that contained all of Madness and their partners and a few friends. As the evening progressed, Mike Barson whipped the cover off a nearby upright piano and the whole place was treated to about an hours worth of the bands greatest hits in a knees up style. Priceless.
