Right. Next Word London bloggers' drinks: Friday 26th March.

*UPDATE* We now have a venue! The Prince Arthur, Eversholt Street, Euston.

More on the pub: http://www.golden-p.co.uk/ We've got an area booked on the left of the pub. Look for the Word flag.
Location: http://www.golden-p.co.uk/location.htm and Google map: http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=NW1+1BX&ie=UTF8&z=16&...

Please sign up if you're thinking of coming along.. The last two meet-ups have been thoroughly lovely, so here's hoping the third will be even bigger and better. Everyone's welcome to join us!

So... who's up for it??

Hat thrown in ring.

http://www.fancyapint.com/pubs/pub110.php
http://www.randompubfinder.com/review.php?Name=The_Angel,_101_Bermondsey...
Although they have a large and extremely attractive upstairs room (see second link)that is empty most nights Bermondsey, for all its myriad attractions, is not central.
Phoenix would be good.

0
Dr.Pill | 28 January 2010 - 10:35pm

Venue problems??

Announce that you've got a load of blokes of a certain age with large thirsts and deep pockets who are likely to cause trouble only if the ale isn't at the right temperature and I'd have thought that most pubs would have had your arm off..

And I want to come. I have built up a stock of brownie points tonight.

0
Lenny Law | 28 January 2010 - 10:40pm

But of course

It's in the diary.

Sadly, knowledge of London pubs with useful function rooms = zero. Ability to drink in them unaffected.

0
Specs_Beard | 28 January 2010 - 10:41pm

Count me in

Backwards7 needs some more info on U11 football and we need to organise an Origamioff.

Venue wise, the nearer Waterloo, the better but I'm game for anywhere fairly central.

0
Leedsboy | 28 January 2010 - 10:50pm

As a young Michael Jackson sang

I'll be there.

0
Carl Parker | 28 January 2010 - 11:09pm

Mine's a lager

Yes I hope to make it. It may be worth looking at the Weatherspoon pubs in town. They are reasonably priced with a good selection of drinks. They do tend to get a bit busy near stations on a friday night though.
While I'm here have you seen this thread Hannah? I think you should!
http://www.wordmagazine.co.uk/content/star-system-fail-blog

Tee hee.....

0
Lunaman | 29 January 2010 - 8:38am

Cheers for the heads up Luna...

that made my day! Brilliant!

0
Hannah | 29 January 2010 - 9:07pm

Update

Sorry won't be able to make this one I'm away for the weekend. i will be at the Word gig though - so hopefully catch up with some of you there.

0
Lunaman | 9 March 2010 - 4:05pm

we'll miss you mate

See you at the gig tho

0
Hannah | 11 March 2010 - 12:20am

Count me in this time

A long jaunt down from the West Midlands will be worth it to see you guys. How will I know I have the right place? Is Hannah the only one without a beard?

0
Steve Turner | 29 January 2010 - 8:44am

A surprisingly beardless bunch you'll find.

In the diary, will do my best to come, but the FPO wants to go on holiday around that time so it's all a bit dodgy

0
ganglesprocket | 29 January 2010 - 9:05am

Dear Hannah

Thank you very much for your kind invite to the next Word Blog meet up.

I am able to attend and very much look forward to seeing you all there.

Yours,
Joe R

0
Joe R | 29 January 2010 - 9:10am

Dear Joe R

I am delighted that you are able to withstand another evening of random gentlemen informing you that they are old enough to be your father.

;-)

Yours,
Hannah

1
Hannah | 29 January 2010 - 9:13pm

Hope so

All being well, I'd love to attend.

0
Martin Simmonds | 29 January 2010 - 10:05am

this time

I really really hope I will be there. It's diaried so here's hoping.

0
goosefat101 | 29 January 2010 - 10:12am

I'm game

You don't need to be a member of the Phoenix to book the back room or even to get in. Just be there before 8pm.

0
Five-Centres | 29 January 2010 - 10:13am

unfortunately if you're not a member...

...you can't book room til much nearer the time, members get first dibs.

but it's a cracking venue. (although on past performances, I'll struggle to get there for 8pm and I'd hate to miss the party...!)

so unless anyone else comes up with a winning suggestion, the phoenix it is...

0
Hannah | 29 January 2010 - 12:45pm

(No subject)

0
David Rothon | 10 February 2010 - 5:41pm

Yep.

In the diary.

I'll put my thinking cap on and see whether I can remember any pubs in central London with a decent space and who don't take the proverbial.

0
Richie B | 29 January 2010 - 10:43am

Thanks again Hannah

I hope so. The 26th is just a couple of days after my birthday though so the current Mrs B (ooh she hates that) may have other plans afoot around that weekend.

I'm sure I'll have time to pop in and say hello come what may.

0
Beezer | 29 January 2010 - 1:18pm

what does she hate Andy?

being called Mrs B or is it the "current" that gets her?

0
Sid Williams | 3 March 2010 - 7:40pm

Good question

She could argue very convincingly for both.

0
Beezer | 3 March 2010 - 7:49pm

I shall be there

Regardless of venue. The Yorkshire Grey also have a minimum charge, I have established. Like the Lamb they can do a reserved area. Fingers crossed it will be my last day at my current employer so I shall be in a celebratory mood.

0
Twangothan | 29 January 2010 - 1:29pm

Grub

Just talking to Hannah, what do we think about grub? Would we be interested in a buffet to soak up the booze? What is a reasonable amount? Personally I see eating a bit as a useful investment as it permits more beer to be consumed.

0
Twangothan | 29 January 2010 - 2:30pm

Eminently sensible..

...but extremely hard to administer!

0
Richie B | 29 January 2010 - 4:08pm

Food. Good.

Yes, I'd happily chip in for chips.

What are they willing to provide? Sandwiches? Bowls of nuts? A smorgasbord?

0
Beezer | 29 January 2010 - 4:23pm

It's best to

find somewhere that does food but not do any splits or anything I'd say. Cos people have different means and different ways of budgeting and once you start splitting bills things can get awkward.

0
goosefat101 | 29 January 2010 - 6:09pm

I think you're probably right

Too difficult to do it any other way on reflection. So, venue doing grub then all decide whether they want the traditional porkie scratchings and 6 pints or something more balanced (bowl of chips, sachet of tomoto sauce, 6 pints).

0
Twangothan | 30 January 2010 - 2:10pm

In

Count me in thanks

0
tim tunes | 29 January 2010 - 3:14pm

Count me in

Esp if central location like this.

But can I have photo approval next time?!

0
Occam | 29 January 2010 - 4:17pm

Will definitely try

Only requirement is that travel to Waterloo (for train back to south coast)isn't too far as to eat into valuable socialising and drinking time. Oh, and good real beer would be a bonus.

0
Thomas the Rhymer | 29 January 2010 - 5:32pm

I ran this before the FPO tonight..

And it seems I've got a Pink Ticket.

Game well and truly on!

0
Lenny Law | 29 January 2010 - 10:54pm

Roll up, roll up...

So, as you may have seen at the top of the thread, we now have a venue in Euston. Nice and central, hopefully convenient for journey there and home again.

Big thanks to Mr Twangothan for doing a recce on the pub. Beer looks good, and they do splendid sounding grub too.

So... come on, sign up below and join us... there's plenty of time to clear it with your FPO ;-)

0
Hannah | 7 February 2010 - 11:12pm

I used to work for a company

who had an office on Eversholt Street and I went there a few times. Isn't that the street that's full of... how should I put this... gentleman's interest emporiums?

(Not that it'll stop me going, mind, just saying, you know, um...)

0
Joe R | 8 February 2010 - 9:19am

I believe there is a branch of...

Spearmint Rhinoceros there. And some jazz mag retailers. Other than that it's a lovely spot.

0
Patrick Crowther | 8 February 2010 - 9:27am

Patrick

Would you be able to make this meet-up?

0
Retro Man | 8 February 2010 - 10:10am

Errr... this is awkward...

I have posted before of my deep appreciation of the Massive and the difference this site has made to my life, but I would prefer to keep it a long distance love affair. I don't really know why... I'm certain you would all be wonderful people... I'm just funny that way. I'd rather keep things as they are.

1
Patrick Crowther | 8 February 2010 - 1:37pm

I can swing with that, Patrick

No need to explain. Or feel bad.

Keep posting. And uploading the photos.

0
Beezer | 8 February 2010 - 1:58pm

Perfectly understandable Patrick...

and sorry if I put you on the spot.

Two of my friends were bugging me to join the next Word meet-up, one is a well known photographer and the other is half Italian. Your name just sprang to mind as I know from reading your posts how much photography and Italy mean to you, thought you might have lots to talk about.

0
Retro Man | 8 February 2010 - 2:19pm

The half Italian

will be turning up as well, looking forward to it.

0
Francis Barry-Walsh | 24 March 2010 - 7:55pm

Ooh, jazz mags

I might buy a couple - I'm after the definitive piece on The Birth of The Cool

1
Joe R | 8 February 2010 - 10:49am

I went

And had a look for Hannah - I spotted one gents mag shop but it didn't strike me as being any more sleasy than any other areas. Mind you I was zooming along on my bike and didn't linger.

0
Twangothan | 8 February 2010 - 12:48pm

and much appreciated it was too.

the looking, not the gents mag shop. you know.

oh I'll stop now.

0
Hannah | 8 February 2010 - 12:56pm

I think there you'll find Transformations

Ladies clothes for men of all shapes and sizes...

0
Five-Centres | 10 February 2010 - 5:40pm

If you thought Mr Ben was wierd

Then you're in for anotherm surprise!

0
Lunaman | 16 February 2010 - 7:50am

Pink Ticket still there.

I've just got to find a hotel. The FPO says that, for some reason, the idea of a heavily-refreshed, smelling-of-kebabs-and-probably-also-covered-in-dribble-having-fallen-asleep-on-the-train husband crashing into bed fully-clothed at something approaching 2am then falling into a stupor flat on his back and snoring and farting all night isn't something she's all that keen on.

Not that this has ever happened previously when I've been out for a few drinks in Town and taken the last train back.

Well. Not all that often.

It's strange but I thought all these primal, masculine things were what women found attractive in men. Female memmbers of The Massive may have found themselves becoming aroused whilst reading the opening paragraph. Control yourselves, ladies.

1
Lenny Law | 8 February 2010 - 12:02am

Sadly I can't come.

I will be in a cottage near St Ives on the 26th, but I will have a glass of real ale and toast you all in absentia...

0
ganglesprocket | 8 February 2010 - 9:44am

Oh yeah!

Vorgongoddess says yes, so I'll be there. Mvps, I'll see if I can root out a copy of that Shaun Ryder spoken-word thing for ya!

0
Vorgongod | 8 February 2010 - 10:07am

Yes for me...

although I have the FPO and various non-contributors and secret subscribers asking if they can also join, of course I said "No!". Well, not unless they sign up to the Blog, choose a silly name, learn the secret handshake and buy Fraser two pints of Guinness each.

0
Retro Man | 8 February 2010 - 10:18am

Everyone's welcome!

KBHR bought her partner (not a Word reader) and her charming friend Bruce (Word reader but not blogger) along to the last meet... it was a pleasure to have them both along. So, if you've got chums who really want to come along, please feel free to bring them.

Having said that, I really really really like the idea of a secret bloggers handshake. Maybe we should have our own theme tune as well. Possibly a group dance. OK, I'll stop there.

0
Hannah | 8 February 2010 - 7:24pm

Word Massive Morris Dancing Troupe

maybe? Accompanied by ukulele music and a touch of Wicker Man pagan style prancing round a maypole in the pub garden?

0
Retro Man | 8 February 2010 - 7:26pm

No!

And I am unanimous on that.

0
Beezer | 8 February 2010 - 7:54pm
Patrick Crowther | 8 February 2010 - 7:56pm

oh ho!

Patrick, you'll regret saying that.

http://www.themorrisring.org/Shop.htm

The order should arrive in good time for the Word night out...

0
Hannah | 8 February 2010 - 8:13pm

Much has been said...

This is rare footage of the last Word Massive Booze up Patrick...see the beards...

0
Richie B | 8 February 2010 - 8:41pm

Should be able to make it

It's in the diary...the pub is much nicer than the street which it inhabits, believe me.

0
Richie B | 8 February 2010 - 10:24am

.

0
Hannah | 8 February 2010 - 1:09pm

Still on

Though I may not be able to linger due to possible plans for that weekend currently being hatched by the Fuppoh.

Also I will be in a whistle and flute though in no way as urbane and sophisticated as Captain Underpants, as he appeared at the last one.

His Yves St Laurent type stylings will be poorly mirrored by my Monsieur Acheter Droit.

1
Beezer | 8 February 2010 - 10:48am

The Captain...

...will be demonstrating the fine art of laptop juggling in a cravat, no doubt. Or not.

0
Richie B | 8 February 2010 - 1:26pm

I dunno

Mrs Pants (aka "A pearl without price" - D. Hepworth) might have something to say about it. Probably involving sofa beds and spare rooms.

I'll start the paperwork to see if I can get clearance. Is it Form G-213a (Unsupervised Night 0ut - Midweek) or Form S-234c (Drink-Related Socialising: non-vetted personnel)?

6
Captain Underpants | 8 February 2010 - 8:34pm

That made me

do a little lol

0
Joe R | 9 February 2010 - 8:22am

Splendid!

Good news that the Massive is once again girding its collective loins for another get together. I'll be there!

0
Baskerville Old Face | 8 February 2010 - 10:56am

Early doors...

...for me, as I have a dawn start on 27 March for the Volksworld show at Sandown.

0
pocket.calculator | 8 February 2010 - 11:15am

YES, too

Fingers crossed I'll be in town that night. Been unemployed, so laying low, but I'm feeling an upwards surge coming on!

0
the_saint | 8 February 2010 - 1:20pm

I'm going to keep registering my interest...

...even though I know for sure I can't make this one. Accountancy finals in May (should have done them years ago...etc...etc..).

However, my GLW is getting away on her lonesome for 4 days during the summer, so if there's a late August gathering for number 4, I should be able to make it, due to brownie point build up. I'll even bring my guitar.

0
Iainso | 8 February 2010 - 1:49pm

i'm fully intending to be there

as I have the last two. This time though I feel will be the one I do get to make!

0
goosefat101 | 8 February 2010 - 2:04pm

I going to try my utmost to be there

If I can get the necessary paperwork completed to leave the Midlands.

0
Handsome.P.Wonderful | 10 February 2010 - 5:09pm
Retro Man | 11 February 2010 - 12:05pm

NAME BADGES

Word handles written in felt tip pen in large letters on sticky labels - would remove all awkward 'I'm Spanner Man, er, but my real name's Kevin and I work in IT' nonsense. Waddyathink?

1
Occam | 11 February 2010 - 10:39am

Depends how daft your name is.

I'd feel like a plonker with my handle on display and sadly Captain Underpants is taken.

0
ganglesprocket | 11 February 2010 - 10:53am

Aw look

It'll be bad enough meeting under a flag that says "Entertainment for Lively Minds" without having to wear a badge that says Captain fucking Underpants.

3
Captain Underpants | 11 February 2010 - 11:28am

You, Sir...

just caused me to splutter my drink over the computer.
best middle name EVER.

0
Hannah | 11 February 2010 - 11:50am

True fact

I haven't got a middle name, so I might sneak that onto my birth certificate. It's sure to be a conversation starter at parties.

(My surname isn't "R" either - that would just make me sound like a pirate)

0
Joe R | 11 February 2010 - 12:16pm

Such a shame

I felt sure none of us was too fragile to worry about having the likes of 'Vorgongod' or 'Captain Underpants' pinned to our chests.

Oh well, back to mumbling 'and who are you' at random people who might just have sat in the wrong part of the pub...

0
Occam | 11 February 2010 - 12:27pm

You're forgetting

there might be real people in this pub. Any anyway, you've got a cool name, so you're okay, although you may get people asking for shaving tips.

0
Captain Underpants | 11 February 2010 - 12:46pm

Vorgongod...

Funnily enough I bumped into him last night as I was off to The Lamb for a quick pint, total coincidence. There was a bit of an awkward moment as we struggled to remember each other's real names!

Anyway, good to see you again Vorgongod, even though we were both in non-rocknroll work mode and not wearing shades with guitars slung on our backs!

0
Retro Man | 11 February 2010 - 3:20pm

retrooooo!!!!!!!

I'll see you there. Must admit I'm not too comfortable in The Fat White Duke's skin> I may see if Fraser can reVorgondeify me...

0
Vorgongod | 8 March 2010 - 6:51pm

Mmmmm

I'll admit I was a little sad when I saw you'd changed from vorgongod. That was a cracker of a name.

Yeah, I know I should get out more...

0
Hannah | 8 March 2010 - 7:35pm

Cool be buggered

Where's your sense of fun! Mine's as pretentious as they come - at least yours has a built-in ice-breaker!

0
Occam | 11 February 2010 - 12:58pm

I'm probably in

This doesn't coincide with the Easter hols does it? Barring unforeseen circumstances I'll be there. As a bonus to me, Eversholt Street is closer to home and it won't be so cold on the bike. I may even have a third pint.

0
Theo Zoffrok | 11 February 2010 - 11:47am

I think it's the last day of term

on Friday 26th March itself. Hopefully still ok?

0
Hannah | 11 February 2010 - 12:01pm

Naaah

Easter is the first weekend in April.

0
Fraser Lewry | 11 February 2010 - 11:54am

I am now a possible

I have some work related requirements to be in London around then. if I
can work my diary I would like to be Scottish Envoy at this. all I need now is someone to arrange a Birmingham gathering when I am in Brum (as I am right now) and I will be on my way to having the set!

0
el hombre malo | 3 March 2010 - 7:49pm

Great! Just don't forget the dress code...

Grey Tweed "Modern Kilt" with matching waistcoat and jacket.

0
Retro Man | 3 March 2010 - 9:09pm

I'll change my username

to "Miss Marple".

(Fraser - I'm only joking, please don't change me, my cousin Raul would disown me)

0
el hombre malo | 3 March 2010 - 9:39pm

Damn it

Having been determined to come, the damned football team I support has got itself to Wembley (Johnstone's Paint Pot) and I'll be going there on Sunday 28th. I fear two fun times out in London in one weekend would be more fun than I could sneak past the FPO.

But surely somone with a laptop and a bit of the know-how common amongst the massive could do a live stream from the event. I'll get some ale in and a packet of crisps and it will be just like I'm there.

0
Thomas the Rhymer | 3 March 2010 - 9:29pm

a fellow Saint I assume

take her with you and point her at the shops. Look at it this way, it could be years before the moons of "Massive meet" and "Saints at Wembley" align again.

0
Sid Williams | 4 March 2010 - 10:15pm

I'm in.

Despite not being a very regular poster, I'm in. I hope I won't be made to stand in a special "doesn't post very often" corner. It's just that nearly all my internet time is accounted for in the discussion of Fender Jazzmasters. Yes, really.

0
Bob | 4 March 2010 - 9:19pm

That sounds

like a perfect fit.

0
Carl Parker | 4 March 2010 - 10:14pm

Well...

...in that case, I'm definitely in. I won't bring the Jazzmasters, though.

0
Bob | 4 March 2010 - 10:41pm

How many ?

I owned one briefly but it didn't respond well to my Tyson-esque attack. It played beautifully in the shop, sitting down, with me playing like I thought I was Tom Verlaine. But once I got onstage and started thinking I was Johnny Ramone, it took the hump and was untuneable. (May still be untuneable, actually)

They look great, and sound great, but I bought a Telecaster after that which seemed to like being hit hard.

0
el hombre malo | 5 March 2010 - 12:33am

I have two.

One is a 2007 "thin-skin" in Shoreline Gold. The other is a custom made "Jazzblaster", made for me by a luthier in Tennessee earlier this year. Like you say, they're lovely guitars - incredibly versatile (yet sonically unmistakable) and utterly beautiful.

The answer to the tuning issues is the bridge. Most techs haven't a clue how to set up a JM bridge properly, and tend to recommend replacement. This works, but isn't always necessary. But, like you, I tend to hammer a bit, so I have a Mastery bridge on both my JMs. Fixes everything, while retaining the JM character. Bit pricey, though.

Photobucket

2
Bob | 8 March 2010 - 3:35pm

lovely!

The gold one is especially gorgeous

0
el hombre malo | 8 March 2010 - 6:11pm

Thanks!

I'm a big fan myself. :-D

I've actually recently stripped back. I'm down to two Jazzmasters, my battered and much loved Fender acoustic and a Jazz Bass (yeah, I like Fender).

Until recently, I had a Jaguar, a '72 Tele Custom, a Gibson SG Special, a '73 Silvertone and about a zillion pedals. On the pedal front, it's just boost, distortion, wah and delay. Oh, and I sold three amps too. It's a disease and I'm in recovery.

0
Bob | 8 March 2010 - 9:06pm

[Hangs head] Can no longer come...

Hannah, if you're keeping a strict count of attendees, please strike me from the list.

Mrs Specs_Beard going into hospital for an op, so will obviously be staying close to home.

Given the wife's unending tolerance for my CD-buying/gig-attending habits .... is she the first Accidental FPO?!

0
Specs_Beard | 7 March 2010 - 6:53pm

ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh shame...

really sorry to hear that, and really hope that Mrs S_B will be ok.

ah well. hopefully there'll be another one later in the year, so hopefully see you then!

0
Hannah | 8 March 2010 - 7:38pm

Alas

Hi Hannah, Beezer here - formerly Andy Barrons.

It would appear I shall now be unavailable on the night of the 26th. Bittersweet for me. I had a marvellous time at the last one and was hoping to speak to all those I simply nodded at last time. The fine Retro Man and many others.

But it's my birthday weekend so Mrs B has plans. These birthday 'plans' have previously been known to comprise a kiss on the cheek, a Terrys Chocolate Orange and a trip to B and Q for some emulsion paint and polystyrene coving, but I'm aiming higher this year.

My apologies. Have a splendid evening one and all.

0
Beezer | 8 March 2010 - 8:47am

oh nooooo

not you as well Andy! you'll be missed.
at least birthday larks sound like a marvellously happy thing to be doing instead.
have a wonderful time and hopefully see you at the next one.

0
Hannah | 8 March 2010 - 7:43pm

Ah, thanks Andy...I'm welling up...

but then again, as you mentioned, we didn't actually have chance to chat...you might not be saying "fine" if we had...!

Shame you can't make it.

0
Retro Man | 9 March 2010 - 7:12pm

Hola!

Right, I have just organised travel and accomodation, so I will be there, hotfoot from Glasgow. As noted above, I will be at the Glasgow one this Friday and depending on dates I may also be able to make the Birmingham one - does that make me Henry Kissinger ?

I can guarantee "shuttle" but I cannot guarantee "diplomacy"

0
el hombre malo | 8 March 2010 - 3:11pm

Henry Kissinger?

More like Phil Collins...

0
Captain Underpants | 8 March 2010 - 3:36pm

Apologies from here too

I'm going to Longleat that weekend. Next time for sure...

0
Theo Zoffrok | 10 March 2010 - 11:46am

bring me back a lion

Sorry not to be seeing you. There will be more drinks!

0
Hannah | 11 March 2010 - 12:35am

NEW THREAD:

please let me know if you can make it here:

0
Hannah | 11 March 2010 - 2:43pm

Whoops

Bit late catching up with this, but I'm in - do you have to make your own name badges? or will a post it on the forhead do?
