Sibling Rivalry

Tom's picture

At work today we've been unsuccessfully trying to think of bands with both a brother and a sister within them. It's easy to think of bands of brothers (Beach Boys, Kinks, Oasis, Jackson 5, Dire Straits, National, Kings of Leon etc) and sisters (Sister Sledge, Nolans, Shangri-Las, Ronettes etc) but we struggled to think of many brother/sister line ups.

Here's the four we thought of:

Carpenters
Corrs
Magic Numbers
Same Difference

Surely there's got to be more?

The Kelly Family

Huge in Germany. For some reason.

Kelly Family are indeed big in Germany

My wifes cousin once drove from Berlin via UK to Ireland to stalk out the house of one of the Kelly clan with the vain hope of falling in love with him and getting married. Oh those Germans!!

Didn't

Jack and Meg White claim to be siblings despite being married to each other?

Of the brother and sister lineups two spring to mind, Donny and Marie Osmond, and Michael and Janet Jackson, seen here.

The White Stripes

I've never been clear on this; they were brother and sister, then there was an internet rumour that it was a lie and they used to be married. A scanned image of a marriage certificate was passed around online, but I imagine this could be easily faked. Lots of people now take it as a given that they're not siblings, but have they ever come out and said it?

They married in 1996.

Jack took Meg's surname, unusually. The wedding certificate is apparently genuine, although they later claimed to be brother and sister (they divorced in 2000).

I don't think that Jack and Meg have ever confirmed anything either way (even though it is known that they were married): Jack has however said that it's much more interesting to keep the air of mystery going.

The Sallyangie

Sally Oldfield (21) and her younger brother Michael (16) were signed on the recommendation of Pentangle guitarist John Renbourn and released an album "Children Of The Sun" on Transatlantic in 1969.
"Crystalline and gentle contemporary folk. Fey and Naïve." according to AllMusic. All songs were co-written by Sally & Mike.

Cast your minds back, pop pickers

Pre solo career Dusty Springfield was in a band, imaginatively called The Springfields, that featured her brother Tom.

Does anyone remember The Honeycombs? They had a hit with Have I The Right? and featured Honey Lantree on drums and her brother on another instrument.

Carl Parker | 26 July 2011 - 6:38pm

Wasn't there a brother and sister in The Poppy Family

or am I imagining? I can't find the Best Of to hand.

Susan and Terry Jacks (the

Susan and Terry Jacks (the SitSH) were husband and wife not brother and sister. Is Free From the City on the best of? It's ages since I've dug out the album, but I remember that track being a real treat in a sunny psych-lite sort of way.

Back on track, wasn't Garth Brooks's sister also his bassist?

Quick line.....

.....and something which says far, far, far, far, far more about George Michael than Amy Winehouse (RIP).
He tweeted (is that right) that Amy was the greatest ever British female singer.
Jolly good.
Someone get yer man:
(a) a chauffeur and,
(b) (and arguably more importantly) a record collection.

Some more

The Knife are brother/sister, I think.

Fiery Furnaces (only a relation would agree to be in that band, I assume).

0
JoLean | 26 July 2011 - 6:51pm

Mr Rollo's sister

a little known singer called Dido is all over the Faithless records. Although there is a Sister Bliss, no Brother Bliss appears - maybe it's a 'Frank Beard is the one without a beard' thing?

Brother / sister duo from Newcastle...

I bought this single, from '86.
Anyone else remember them?

0
Adman | 26 July 2011 - 7:06pm

Yes, loved this, still do

I thought they were married, and hoped to be the new Richard and Linda Thompson. Didn't realise they were siblings.

0
Five-Centres | 27 July 2011 - 12:38pm

I seem to remember

that there was a brother and sister in the ATSW-hitmakers Ace Of Base.
And apparently they are no longer on speaking terms since the guys decided to restart the band this year with a couple of new girls.
Christmas dinner could be a rather awkward affair this December...
