Shuffle stories - The Thrills

art vanderlay's picture

This came up on shuffle this week and I was glad it did, it's been some since I listened to the debut album So Much For The City and I had forgot just how much I liked most of the songs and I amazed, along with many others, that they hailed from Ireland rather than San Francisco.

It's a bit of a strange one really, but not entirely without precedent for me, but The Thrills are one of those bands whose first album I played to death and got far more than my money's worth and then, for some strange reason never got round to buying( or even listening to or previewing) any subsequent albums. Maybe my subconscious is telling me not to bother as they are unlikely to have a better album in them. This was the same for The Magic Numbers (who debut I can barely listen to now for some reason, even after seeing them perform a frankly unexpectedly blinding gig at Northampton Roadmenders), Wilco, Kings Of Leon (I was right on that occasion then!) and many others.

Anyway I think this is a lovely song and perfect for a Sunday morning.

A national radio station...

In Ireland airs a daily satirical sketch segment.

One of the recurring targets a few years ago was The Thrills, making fun of their accents, middle class background etc.

This went a long way towards killing their career stone dead over here I reckon.

So are they now....

Pretty much washed up as a band, even in Ireland?

ESPECIALLY in Ireland...

Not that we've any money left to be buying records anyway....

True

It was the guitarist always referring to himself as "Pork" when his given name was "Padraig" (southside accent you see). Saw them at a festival, god awful live.

Agreed

Pure gick.

As much credibility as Sinead O'Connor's wedding vows.

Thrills

You haven't missed much. Classic one-album wonders.

Thrilling? Erm...

Quite liked their records, went to the NME Tour (2003, iirc) where they were on first - and they turned out to be the dullest live band I have ever seen. This from a woman who has paid to see James Blunt (I know).

Shame, as they had some good singles.

Rapidly diminishing returns for me

heard a single - liked it; bought the album - it was ok, in parts; saw them live (albeit on the telly) - thought they were sh*te; ignored them ever since.
Although I do know the answer to one of their song titles: he's dead.

The Thrills

Aways a little lightweight for my taste, but they did inspire Alex Turner to write Fake Tales of San Francisco, so they weren't totally useless.

Never heard that one before...

Are you sure?

Almost certain

Though I can't remember where I read it. Obviously the song isn't *about* The Thrills, as they're not from Hunter's Bar or Rotherham. But they gave Turner the idea for the song.
