Shuffle stories - I Think It's Going To Rain Today

art vanderlay's picture

Two cover versions came up on shuffle while out on the bike this morning and I thought I would post them here a. Because I love them both and b. To see what others thought and I am expecting there will be a lot who will wish the down bottom was still an option.

Unfortunately the first one I had lined up does not seem to appear on you tube anywhere but for anyone interested it was a version of Wichita Lineman by a band called the clouds. This is somewhat like The Jesus And Mary Chain covering Glenn Campbell but with a breathy female vocal, lots of distorted guitars etc. Anyway take my word for it, it's lovely .

The next is by a deeply unfashionable band but I still stand by their first album, which is full of smokey Sunday morning Uk reggae, now I know a lot of the massive are big randy Newman fans so I can imagine a certain sniffy disapproval of this version of a song which has been covered by many different artists. I however am not very familiar with original and feel no need to get to know it as this has, for me, become the definitive version.

Sniffy disapproval! Why?

I'm a big Randy Newman fan. I'm also very fond of the first two UB40 albums (Present Arms was pretty good too). The two things aren't mutually exclusive, simply because the Brummie band evolved into UBboring.

Sorry probably could have....

Worded that better, it's just the fact that it's a Randy Newman song combined with UB40 who laterly seemed to demolish a one time impeccable reputation and so I presumed some negative feedback.

Anyway glad I seem to be in good company on this.

The first UB40 album is fantastic and it should be in every home.
