Shaped Picture Disc Amnesty

Hawkfall's picture

As much as I love vinyl, one of the good things about the arrival of CDs is that it spelled the end for all those "limited edition" picture discs that bands and record companies used to shove out in a cynical attempt to nudge the record up a few places in the charts.

Having grown up in the 80s, I'm ashamed to say that I spent far too much pocket money on buying these pointless "collector's editions", with their cheap PVC sleeves, warped vinyl and a sound quality usually only found in bootlegs of AM Radio broadcasts.

Still, they say that the first step to recovery is to admit you have a problem, so here goes: "My name is Hawkfall and I bought this pointless record when it came out (even thought I already had the 7" single):"

You know, I feel a bit better now. Anybody else feel like sharing one of their own picture disc purchases from the depths of the 80s? A Tigertailz 7" single with their autographs laser-etched on the vinyl? A Bros interview picture disc?

I have no idea where it is now,

but I once purchased a copy of 'Fish Heads' by Barnes and Barnes, as a fish head shaped picture disc. As you do.

Good job this isn't picture disc poker

Or else I'd be throwing my cards theatrically onto the table, saying "I compete with THAT".

Who the devil were Barnes & Barnes? I reckon that unless someone out there has a Mama's Boys or Scarlett Fantastic pic disc in their collection, then you're going to be hard to beat.

Another reason You Tube is wonderful:

The song kicks in at around 2.15

I haven't checked ebay, but I have a suspicion it won't be too hard to pick up. And if they happen to be selling for a truckload, please don't tell me - I don't think I could cope.

Who the devil were Barnes and Barnes?

Well one of them was Bill Mumy. Who was the child actor in Lost in Space."Danger! Will Robinson!"

He then went on to have a fairly major role in Babylon 5.

I had this in 1983 - £1.49

Loved it then...
Sold it at a record fair in the 90's for about a tenner(why?)
Want it back!!!!

I'm just too unhip

I loved all the gimmicky coloured vinyl, picture discs, shaped discs etc - they were all part of the rich vinyl tapestry, and occasionally you'd get something pretty memorable, if only momentarily.

Then again, I only bought songs I actually liked...and this one was a beaut (actually it was the B-side that was preferred) - come to think of it, it's the only shaped disc I own.

The Beloved

I loved picture discs - they made the track seem even more special. Not certain I'd even have bought this without the massive pink hand.

I have

the Guns N Roses Paradise City gun shaped pic disc that went into a leather holster amongst many (mostly metal) shaped pic discs. the Iron Maiden ones in late 80's were usally Eddie shaped

How about stupid novelty shaped CD single cases? This 12" long Alice Cooper job with the CD in the gun chamber

I had the Poison Cd single, which folded out into a bottle (see below). Mind you, he'd been doing it for ages, and i have to say that the Billion Dollar Babies vinyl packaging was brilliant.

Men At Work

No picture unfortunately but I seem to remember buying Men At Work's single in blue vinyl in the shape of Australia.

The Members

I had (possibly still do, but I don't remember seeing it when I tied up my singles a few months ago) a rectangular 7" version of Working Girl on red vinyl.

Oh god

Before reading this thread I had absolutely, completely forgotten that I once owned one of the following. The memory just surged out of nowhere One of very few records I have no regrets about having lugged down the 2nd hand store. I hope the world can forgive me for having bought it in the first place. It's not even so much the music on it - just look at the item - it's awful:

2
spt | 31 October 2011 - 3:18pm

oh god again

Another burst of memory - it came with a stand. A stand! That's what the bit at the bottom was for. It slotted into a stand so you could display it. I might even have done that. I was young...

proof

I'm genuinely mortified. I'm going for a lie down.

2

Bloody Hell

That just might be the tackiest thing ever released by a major group. Even Queen never stooped that low.

0
Hawkfall | 31 October 2011 - 3:54pm

Oh I remember the stands!

I have\had a Bruce Dickinson *eeek* "All the Young Dudes" *shudders* coffin shaped picture disc (that they buried his solo career in) which came with a stand.

Nurse, the screens!

I remember an Aerosmith logo shaped pic disc that was so warped at the end of the wings that it couldn't be played (a good thing)

Ooh, EMI, you are spoiling us.

0
Hawkfall | 31 October 2011 - 3:57pm

How about the record fair fave

the uncut shaped pic disc with the excess clear vinyl left on before cutting stage. I have a couple of these "rarities"

>

0
DogFacedBoy | 31 October 2011 - 4:07pm

I have

a Balaam and the Angel (anyone? No, thought not) one. Not aware that a cut version exists. Presumably someone at the record label saw how much it would cost to cut them, compared that to the likely sales of their ill-advised post-Cult and the Mission signing and decided not to bother.

0
spt | 31 October 2011 - 4:47pm

Is it for this single?

0

yep - that's the one

Got a T.Rex Uncut Disc

Just looked at it again.
The clear vinyl has dis-coloured to a horrible muddy brown - looks a bit crap now.

Confession is good for the soul.

Does anyone want to admit to buying all three pieces of the TT picture disc jigsaw?

Angus's hand broke off.

Angus's hand broke off. Still got it in the bag in case I ever try to fix it (maybe I could melt it back together?)

The there's the Iron Maiden "gone a bit mad" collection.
In 1988, with too much spare cash, and very little sense I bought just about every conceivable format of the Seventh Son album and its attendant singles.
I have 3 copies of the album (standard, special edition with banner and scarf, picture disc) plus Can I Play with Madness, The Evil That Men Do, The Clairvoyant and Infinite Dreams in all formats - usually 7", 12", Shaped Picture Disc & CD (note: I didn't even have a CD Player in 1988)

I just love this thread. I remember picking up a couple of "RARE" Springsteen SHAPES in the early 80's - (with stands!) as an investment for the future !
They turned a nasty brown over the years, despite being filed away from sunlight. The absurd thing is I couldn't bring myself to throw them out. I have a suspicion they are still lurking in the basement.

That was the Cover Me single

That was the Cover Me single I reckon. I bought 2 iirc, one to keep (must try and dig it out) and one to display in it's cardboard plinth! I also recall buying two flag shaped singles from the Tunnel of Love era, the second of those was to replace the one I bought in a now forgotten (by me) Northern Town en route to a Wolves match and left on a chip shop wall. Not sure if I ever played any of them, but that was never really the point was it?

Not strictly a picture disc, but I had a Wildhearts CD single

(Sick Of Drugs?) that came with a free lawn.

It was, as you might expect, a sheet of blotch with grass seeds impregnated into it. A gentle watering and, a month later, I had a verdant 6" sq. lawn on my windowsill.
