Shanghai
Posted by fortuneight on 8 May 2010 - 2:36pm.
Work takes me on my first visit to China next week, and I'll have a day or two to see the sights of Shanghai. The World Expo would be on, but on the face of it, I'm not tempted to go.
The Massive are a well travelled lot, and I'd welcome any tips and suggestions on where to go and what to do.

Get a suit made
At the fabric market downtown. 2 years ago i had one done, made to measure , wool/cashmere mix . £50
Also there's a bar called either Bar Rouge or Club Rouge it has a nice outdoor terrace and the best views of the Bund and all the lit up skyline.
Shanghai
1. Go on the Maglev train from the airport to the city. 300mph, silent and smooth.
2. Avoid all the salesmen yelling "t-shirt, bag, DVD" at foreigners as they pass.

It is like an old "if you are drinking Barcardi.." advert come to life. Beautiful people, wicker chairs hung from the ceiling, etc. They even have massive ice cubes in the urinals just to keep gents amused while having a piss.
Update: oh dear its closed!
Tourist stuff: apart from The Forbidden City (which IS amazing). I'd recommend the Longhua Temple Tibetan Buddhist Monastery
Tourist stuff
There's a Forbidden City in Shanghai?
blush
woops....mm that would be Bejing wouldn't it? A senior moment there.
Yuyuan Garden
For a small piece of tranquility and bit of history, you should visit the Yu Garden. It's very central to the old part of the city and there's plenty going on around it.
A few here
Similar to above...
YuYuan gardens are worth a look (although I did find it strange having a Starbucks in the "old" buildings around it).
The Maglev should be a definite. It brings you pretty close to the centre of Shanghai and usually only a Metro stop from the main hotels.
Go for a walk along the Bund and also the main commercial street (Nanjing Road ??).
Also worth doing is getting the Metro across the river and going up the Pearl Tower - its a bit crowded sometimes, but does give very impressive views of Shanghai. The aquarium is next door and not bad of you like that kind of thing.
Finally, there are some good little restaurants in the French Concession area - check Lonely Planet etc etc
The French Concession
has a Bavarian Bier Keller. Slightly surreal experience: you can get all sorts of hefeweisse and stuff, served by Chinese waiters in traditional Bavarian clothes.
Pearl Tower
Rather than getting the metro, use the Bund sightseeing tunnel. It's truly surreal.
Shanghai Update
Was about to write a post entitled ATM: Shanghai but thought better of it and found just was I was looking for on this thread, for which many thanks.
However, I think it's important to flag up the fact that Word seems to be proscribed (possibly for too much Richard Thompson and general musoness?)
Seriously, I can't get on Facebook, or Twitter, or the Word site. (I'm getting around it by VPN-ing into my US corporate network, blah blah.) Are you aware of this, and does Word Magazine truly represent a threat to the PRC?
I think it was the other way round
The amount of spam coming in from China meant that Fraser blocked all Chinese IP addresses.
This ^
Is correct.
Lucky you!
