Seventies Science Fiction
I finally cracked and bought the complete series of BUCK ROGERS from the evil WAL-MART empire yesterday. Starring Gil Gerard it was the epitome of Seventies Science Fiction cheese. It shared the same producer as the original BATTLESTAR GALACTICA complete with the same sound effects for laser battles and space-ship jets...All I know is that both shows featured single-man spacefighters that I would have done everything short of killing for...(Imagine a plane hangar with a Colonial Viper and a Starfighter parked side by side...the image gives me a warm glow.)
Anwyay, it was an itch I had to scratch...and does BUCK ROGERS not have one of the coolest saga sell/introductions in the history of science fiction television history? "...only to awaken FIVE HUNDRED YEARS LATER..." Cue the bombastic horn section just before it launches into the insipid Seventies synth-rock...

Seventies Sci fi?
Pshaw, following a fortuitous charity shop visit about a month ago it's all eighties-tastic round here.
However a scene which scared the living bejesus out of me in 1983 had me in fits of laughter this time round. Is that Kermit?
Eeeeeeyikes!
I remember that vividly. What a big letdown. How could one take a extraterrestrial lizard invasion after THAT?
Buck Rogers
I remember watching that in the 70s - and cringing at the scene where Buck demonstrates disco "dancing" to a crowd of 25th-century onlookers. "this is what people from my age call gettin down". Probably one to file under "so bad it's good".
Beagly beagly
Just sayin'.
Absolutely
And then there was Wilma Deering. Bad name, great shiny catsuits.
As I recall
Buck Rogers jumped the shark when they went all Star Trek exploring the universe in a spaceship with some old professor bloke shoved in front of the cameras who couldn't remember his lines. Plus a bird man. Even my 8-year-old-ish self knew it was rubbish.
A boy's dilemma
The well-scrubbed and skin-tight-trousered Wilma Deering? Or Princess Ardala, who was probably much more dirty?
A man's dilemma
How about both?
Erin Gray. Mmmmmm....
she's not ageing badly either
here she is being interviewed at comic-con a couple of years ago:
I went to see the Buck Rogers
film at a cinema in Ilfracombe, Devon whilst on holiday with my folks. It was in a double bill with Mrs Frisby and the Rats of Nimh. I had scrummy choc ice and one of those tasteless hot dogs from the foyer. I was copiously sick afterwards.......28 years old I was.*
*not really, about 8 i think
