When:
Thursday 1st July 2010
Where:
Stag Theatre, Sevenoaks
Comments:
A packed theatre (400 seats, sold out) came to see current folk pin-up Seth Lakeman. I went with some mates out of interest having only listened briefly to 'Freedom Fields'.
The support was a local outfit The Keston Cobblers Club, comprising of a really enthusiastic and energetic foursome plus guest tuba and violin.
They really got the audience on their side, albeit augmented by various family members and friends. A great mix of acoustic original songs with a very different 'folky' feel to them.
Seth hit the stage around 9pm and played a set comprised of old and new songs. Highlights for me included Solomon Browne, Poor Man's Heaven and some tracks from the new album.
He had the usually reserved Sevenoaks audience, dancing in the aisles by the encore. A sweaty experience I'm sure.
The Audience:
The audience seemed to be made up predominantly of women of a certain age (35+) who obviously are attracted to his boyish charms. Once they got going they didn't want to stop!
Food & Drink:
Diet coke beforehand (despite the inviting barrels of real ale on the bar - nominated driver!). Kent produced ice cream tub in the interval and over the road to the Chequers for another coke afterwards.
It Made Me Think...:
That Sevenoaks is gradually coming to realise that there is a market for good quality grown up music, and thanks to local promoter Keith @ Brandywine Music, the gap is being adequately filled.
