Self-serving football thread

JamesB's picture

As the members of the Massive who follow me on Twitter will know, my beloved Bury were promoted at Chesterfield on Monday.

Continued in comments to save you all from embedded YouTubery if you're not all that fussed about fourth division football.

2

That Bury got promoted is

That Bury got promoted is nothing special in itself. Granted it's taken us nine years to get out of this godforsaken, wretched division, but it took Rochdale more than 40 years.

But the circumstances in which we did it: by beating the team who were top of the league and already up, on their own patch, after some of their fans physically attacked our goalkeeper (as posted by David Hepworth on Twitter), 3-2, with this goal in the final three minutes shown from the fans' perspective, were incredible:

The moment the final whistle goes and Bury's promotion is confirmed. Camerawork and strangled screams courtesy of your 'umble narrator:

What made this extra special though is that on getting back to Bury, the players joined the fans in the social club and began the promotion party. Would "Wazza" or John Terry do this after winning something?

Was impressed with your 'keeper for keeping his cool, by the way.

As a Bolton fan

I was bemoaning the other day that the Wanderers don't really have an exclusive rivalry with another team; the nearest we have is probably Bury FC (although it's been at least twenty years since we regularly crossed swords).

For that reason only, I hope Bury climb up the league. We can then beat them home and away and lob pies at them. (Although when we did play them, they did have an annoying habit of beating us.)

0
Brookster | 27 April 2011 - 11:13am

Bolton were Bury's main

Bolton were Bury's main rivals when I started watching football in the late-80s.

But Bolton's rise in the early-90s, due in no small part to a few ex-Bury players who joined after our fire sale when it all went boobs up, pretty much put paid to that.

Certain sections of our support still reserve crude songs for you. Can you confirm whether Bolton Wanderers have indeed ever been to Rome to see the Pope?

0
JamesB | 27 April 2011 - 1:24pm

Pope John Paul II

was known to be a fan of Phil Neal's Super White Army in the late 80s.

0
Brookster | 27 April 2011 - 1:42pm

Bury fans usually say this

But Bolton's rise in the early-90s, due in no small part to a few ex-Bury players who joined after our fire sale when it all went boobs up …

But how many players does this actually amount to? Diddy David Lee and Mark Patterson were bought from Bury. Can't think of anyone else.

0
Brookster | 27 April 2011 - 2:13pm

Patterson, Lee, Tony

Patterson, Lee, Tony Cunningham and John McGinlay all played for Bury before Bolton. Admittedly only TC and Mark Patterson were traded directly (I think) but there's no doubt that envious glances were being cast down Bolton Road by Phil Neal at the other two before they found their way to Burnden Park. Even our reserve goalkeeper Aidan Davison ended up at Bolton in the mid-90s.

0
JamesB | 27 April 2011 - 4:55pm

Maybe

But, after a quick check on Wikipedia, Diddy Dave came to us via Southampton and I know Super John arrived via Millwall (where he'd played under Bruce Rioch). But were they sold for financial reasons or because the manager didn't fancy them?

Cunningham yes (although he wasn't a mainstay). Patterson yes, and he was a regular. I didn't know Davison was a former black pudding.

0
Brookster | 27 April 2011 - 10:49pm

when was it

that Craig Madden scored 4 at Burnden Park? I've never driven so fast as I did down the A58 that night!

I remember when

John McGinlay scored a hat-trick against us at Burnden Park.

Cheers milky. I'm replying to every comment in an effort to spread the love I've been feeling since approx. 4.45pm on Monday. I've no idea how many people I hugged that night.

0
JamesB | 27 April 2011 - 1:26pm

Certainly does milky

My own side, Chester, need a point on Friday to secure the Northern Prem Division 1N title.

A proud FL side for 75 years, we were ravaged by poor owners and went into liquidation. We reformed last May, and were relegated 3 divisions as punishment.

12 months later we are a supporter owned co-operative who have averaged over 2400 home supporters at level 8 of the game, our last home game saw 3300 attend (with 24 away fans).

Bury FC's main man, Ryan Lowe, was a 'fire sale' bargain from ourselves during our demise, and is still a regular at the Deva Stadium. A great bloke, and a brilliant player, 'Lowey' will always be fondly thought of at Chester.

Up the Shakers, up the Seals!

0
waldorf | 27 April 2011 - 2:37pm

That's good to hear, Waldorf

Have been to the Deva stadium (saw you beaten by a 9-man Carlisle side in an absolutely bonkers game about 11 years ago). Good bunch of fans IIRC - there was no trouble when hundreds of Carlisle fans flooded the pitch when the goal went in, and none afterwards either.
Hope you continue upwards.

0
milkybarnick | 27 April 2011 - 4:54pm

Ryan is indeed a terrific bloke. Hugging him in the car park when the players got back to Bury meant nearly as much as his goal.

0
JamesB | 27 April 2011 - 4:59pm

Oh no they`re not!

In Suffolk at least. Next season though I reckon the mighty Town could even be top ten!

0
johnsimpson1965 | 27 April 2011 - 5:15pm

Oooh, yes, sorry about that

There's an Ipswich fan at work; we actually talked about the two games aggregating to 9-2 this weekend this morning. Sounds like you've got some good young players though.

0
milkybarnick | 27 April 2011 - 11:14pm

A Vale fan

says Congratulations.Well deserved. Vale have self destructed despite playing Chesterfield,Bury and Wycombe off the park this season seems we can't beat Barnet,Hereford or Northampton. Bury should thank Jim Gannon for taking us out of the promotion scene therefore making it easier for you. Good luck next season.

0
Sour Crout | 27 April 2011 - 1:12pm

Very true, the performance

Very true, the performance at Vale Park a few weeks ago was wretched. But since Knill left we've played with much more surety - and I'm certain that's the influence of the senior pros Lowe, Sodje and Schumacher rising to the fore.

0
JamesB | 27 April 2011 - 1:28pm

Those will be

the senior pro's who all happen to be ex-Alex, that we have been sadly without for this season.

The only good things for us have been the form of Clayton Donaldson, although he could do with missing fewer penalties, and the debut of 16 year old Max Clayton, supposedly destined to be "the next big thing off the conveyor belt" (TM).

Well done to you guys. If we'da had a bit more grit when it was needed (i.e. when we went third at the end of Jan) we'd be there with you.

el toro calvo grande | 27 April 2011 - 4:10pm

If you'd told me we'd get promoted after our self-destruction at Gresty Road in September I'd never have believed you. Hope things pick up next season.

One of my best mates lives in Crewe and even ran their Rivals website back in the day. I go quite a lot and never have a less-than-great time.

0
JamesB | 27 April 2011 - 5:01pm

Schumacher

Is that the lad who came through the ranks at Everton a while back?

If so, glad he got to make a career out of the game, albeit not at the highest level (or even at Everton's level). He was very highly thought of at youth level, but never really got the chance (or perhaps had the ability) to step up to the first team squad.

Strange to think of him as a 'senior pro' - in my head he will always be 16 going on 17.

0
Paul Waring | 27 April 2011 - 4:20pm

Thats the one

Like Rooney, football has kept him from a life of (major) crime!

glad you got promoted. Looking forward to next season's games. Hope you have almost as good a season as the Dale have had in League 1.

Not to rain on Bury's parade

Hearty Congrats by the way..but on the same day my team Stockport County lost their Football League status after 111 years in the league...we will be back (I hope)....

I used to live in one of the roads behind the reservoirs behind Edgeley Park. You have my comisserations - lack of roof and sun-in-the-eyes aside, I always quite liked Stockport away.

0
JamesB | 27 April 2011 - 1:30pm

best of luck

sad to see County going down so genuinely hope they're back soon. County is a proper football club .... unlike Creepy-Crawley Town. Fingers crossed Fleetwood Town make it via the Conference play-offs

On the other hand...County are Bury's bogey time. In years past we never, ever beat them. I remember one match at Gigg Lane when County had to start with 9 men as 7 of their squad where delayed by snow on the m62. And they bloody won!

0
cradlerock | 28 April 2011 - 4:54pm

Thanks

it will take a lot of hard work and a hell of a lot of luck!

0
Bingham | 29 April 2011 - 1:45pm

I hope so too ...

...but you need to prepare for it taking some time to get back.

As a Carlisle fan who lives in York I've been watching York City for about 15 years. A few years back I got to experience both teams being relegated to the Conference at the same time. Not fun.

So whilst Carlisle went straight back up (and I think were the last to do so) York have been stuck in the 5th division ever since.

The problem is that the division is full of teams I still think of as league sides (Mansfield, Wrexham, Cambridge, etc) so it's not longer the case that the relegated clubs are automatically big fish in a small pond. Especially as clubs like Burton, Stevenage and Crawley are the most recent champions.

On the plus side I do find fixtures against the likes of Eastbourne and Gateshead fascinating in that I never expected to see them. Also the standard of football isn't much different to League 2 so the entertainment is about the same.

Just got to hope your finances can cope with it.

0
Grimmer | 27 April 2011 - 1:44pm

They were the precise

They were the precise reasons I was petrified of relegation in the mid-00s. We were lucky to have a club at all after administration in 2002 (hence the rather cruel 'bucket Shakers' bastardisation of what I consider to be the best nickname in the land) but we'd never have found our way back from the Conference.

0
JamesB | 27 April 2011 - 5:03pm

Well done indeed, JamesB..

your delight is infectious. Really the only fact I know about Bury is that they were (are) the only lower league side to have won the FA Cup twice. Still true?

My own team, Cologne in the Bundesliga, have hit a sticky patch at just the wrong end of the season, needing 2 points more but threatening to lose everything. Damn.

0
Declan | 27 April 2011 - 2:18pm

They seem to have hit their second sticky patch

Started the season terribly, got their act together and have now gone back to being shit again.

0
Brookster | 27 April 2011 - 3:20pm

I don't know about the

I don't know about the *only* lower division side to win it twice, Declan, but we still hold the record for the highest winning margin in a cup final after the 6-0 win over Derby in 1903. Though I feared that'd go when Roberto di Matteo bagged within in a minute for Chelsea v Boro in 1997.

Still, good luck in the dogfight.

We're really, really going to need it. It's the worst side I've seen in 32 years of (occasional) watching.

I was at that game. We desperately needed a win to pull ourselves away from the relegation zone; we duly won 3-2 with the last goal coming in the fourth minute of time added on. As such, I didn't see the funny side of the goal until about 11am the following day.

On my only trip to Gigg Lane...

...I was challenged by the catering lady when I asked for only one Chicken Balti pie. To be fair, it was a Rugby League match. Great news for Bury FC. Magical stuff.

The brilliant celebrations reminded me that Ben Futcher is Paul Futcher's son, whom I saw play at Maine Road when I was a kid. I suddenly feel rather old.

Meanwhile here's some superb footage of another legendary promotion celebration, for those who have never seen it before...36 seconds in...

Richie B | 27 April 2011 - 6:56pm

Congratulations!

And as a Hartlepool fan, it's good to see Richie Barker doing well for you.

Even more pleased as it's a Northern club, as I'm glad to get shot of Swindon & (very likely to be) Plymouth from League One.

Reading Fan

Is this what they call "The Business End of the season"?

We're effectively (not mathematically) in the Play Offs (6 points clear of Millwall & Burnley a superior goal difference, so confidence is high)

Congrats to Bury, and to any other team having a successful time.

QPR weren't so successful Saturday. They belived they were promoted and then ...

(I didn't laugh - honest!)

0
Rigid Digit | 27 April 2011 - 7:22pm

Neil Warnock's face was a picture

when our winner against Derby went in. It was a bit more lively in the BBC commentary box at Carrow Road, though:

After two 94th-minute winners this season - one against Reading, sorry (!) - and battering our local rivals four days earlier, this probably tops our most dramatic season in years.
Who knows what will happen in our last two games - having won 21 of 43 away league games during the Lambert era we'll probably win at Portsmouth and then struggle at home to Coventry.
Would not want to finish third now: just as we sneaked into the top six in 2002 and then beat Wolves I would not fancy playing an in-form Forest or Millwall after missing out on the last day.

0
honestman | 28 April 2011 - 1:45am

What a brilliant thread

I'm a Brentford follower who doesn't go as often as he should. I must try harder next year. My Dad however was born in Bury in 1921, above a tripe shop apparently and lived there until WWII. He spoke fondly of the town and his love of Gigg Lane. Watching Grandstand back in the day one of my fondest memories was on the occasion of a Bury win my old man would punch the air and yell "Up The Shakers". At the time I thought he was a silly old fool, now, not so much, god I miss him. I only remember visiting Bury once as a very small child and have no contact now with any family that may remain. Bury will always be one of the results I look for and my regret about not finding out more about my Dads early years are never far away. Thanks for posting James it's been great reading the responses and stirring up some memories.

You're welcome, Dave. It's genuinely chuff-inducing to read such lovely memories of the effect my little club can have if it gets under your skin.

0
JamesB | 28 April 2011 - 8:06am

I'm hoping Bury take their foot off the gas

...for 90 minutes on Saturday. I've recently adopted Wycombe Wanderers as my local team, having settled in the home counties and wanting to introduce my 6-year-old to football. This is our chance to secure the last automatic promotion spot. Here's hoping Bury are still hungover come the weekend!

0
Joe Robert | 27 April 2011 - 10:52pm

Can't imagine that'll

Can't imagine that'll happen, sorry Joe. We'll want to go for the title now we're only two points behind Chesterfield with two games to play.

0
JamesB | 28 April 2011 - 8:08am

You're probably right

I'm a real Johnny Come Lately to the mighty Chairboys (is that the worst nickname in the league?), having started attending their home matches last month. I haven't seen any evidence of the form which got them up to 2nd (and in fact since we've been watching them they've slipped down to 3rd and briefly 4th). My guess is they're chokers.

Congratulations, by the way!

0
Joe Robert | 28 April 2011 - 1:43pm

they probably will

as I'm making my annual visit to Gigg Lane (father in law's 85th birthday - he's not going but any excuse). Every time in recent years I make it to Gigg they lose. I'm good at way matches though - Shrewsbury, Port Vale and Burton this season.

However..I still haven't forgiven Wycombe for beating us to promotion by 1 goal a couple of seasons ago. And I haven't forgiven Shrewsbury for beating us in the resultant playoff. So..tricky choice...helping hand to the Chairboys or the Shrews? Sorry Joe...has to be the Shrews. Local match for me. Lets hope Walsall say up too.

0

I know it's not right to comment on your own comment but.... told you so. The better side won.

Still...great afternoon at Gigg. Followed by a very pleasant pint of Celebration at the Rose and Crown.
