Scratch my back

Following the brilliant, if not entirely complimentary, review in the latest issue you can have a listen to the new Peter Gabriel album on the Guardian website: http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/musicblog/2010/feb/04/peter-gabriel-scra...
Not listened to the whole thing but so far I feel he added something spooky to Bon Iver's Flume but turned Street Spirit into a rather painful dirge (not helped by the fact he can't hit the right notes).
You can download Flume for free, by the way...

Not Dave
Thought the cover of Heroes was embarrassing
I quite liked this one
I'm not a Bowiephile, which might explain such blasphemy, but I thought he gave it a sense of sorrow and elegance.
Thought the cover of The Boy
Thought the cover of The Boy In The Bubble was fantastic, Gabriel really illuminates the lyrics, and does them more justice than Paul Simon did.
Agreed
Never really payed much attention to the lyrics before. One of the best covers I have ever heard.
That said Heroes was awful.
"Turned Street Spirit into a rather painful dirge"
As opposed to the 'laugh-a-minute knees-up' of the original?
If the Massive want to listen to a decent recent covers album, I commend the Hot Rats latest, 'Turn Ons'.
Half of Supergrass playing songs they love, with joy and spirit - rather than as an academic exercise.
How have I missed that?!
I love Supergrass and I love cover versions! It's even on emusic!
Most definitely downloading that tonight - thanks for the tip!
No Drums
As much as I admire/respect/adore Peter Gabriel, he's never going to sound as good without drums as he did on 'Mother of Violence.'
I blame the success of 'That'll Do.'
Consigned to the Gabriel-albums-I'd-rather-forget box, along with So.
Utterly
Dreary and dirgy - the very opposite of uplifting (and I'm a huge fan of his work!)
Does..
it have to be uplifting? I actually like the album for the fact that it is a rather downbeat take on things.
Never understood the "music must be uplifting" argument myself.
waste of air
the whole is a dreary dreary dirge..what a shame..a wasted opportunity... Pete old man..get back to writing..and stop thinking "art"..you will come around..the song choices were mostly inspired but the interpretaions are so boring
PG presents -
The Party Stopper!
razorblades optional
Sorry, but ...
... I think it's a masterpiece.
I think the naysayers have it...
There are a couple of beautiful versions on here, but after an hour or so of listening to it they seem indistinguishable from the funereal meanderings that fill the rest of the album. I've given it a good go, tried to see the best in it, but I can't get much pleasure from it at all.
Will be interested to listen to 'I'll scratch yours' instead. Bon Iver doing Sledgehammer, anyone?
Emperor's New Clothes
My wife walked into the computer room whilst I was listening to Street Spirit and burst out laughing.I had to agree. An arty idea to far I think. It's worth checking out the Gabriel site for the forums. It's a universal love fest for the album.Ahhh, I love devoted fans. The king is in the altogether I'm afraid.
Computer room!?
.
Computer Room
Sorry,The room that we hang the washing up in that has the computer in the corner.Don't want to sound like a git now.
Phew!
[insert laugh smiley]
would
love to hear the other artist's versions of Gabriel's tunes though!
It,s Horrible...
Just sounds like a bunch of out-takes too dreary to use on a "proper" album...doesn,t bode well for the live shows. Hope he,s got his "Sledgehammer" coat handy!
