Scary old TV

tim tunes's picture

Too late for Halloween but was discussing scary TV with the FPO and we both remembered - and were scarred by - this scene from Armchair Thriller

Got to love that you can think of these clips and then just find them online...Its also covered by wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quiet_as_a_Nun

Still think its pretty scary

Anyone got any others that are imprinted on their memories?

3

Cheers for that

I was 10 or 11 when it was first shown. I remember it vividly, but for some reason had never looked into it online. Thanks to the wonders of the web I've seen it for the first time in 30 years and know that my local library, even if it doesn't have a copy, can order one from another branch in a couple of days. All in 5 minutes (including watching the scene and reading your post) and without moving from where I type. Gotta love the net.

Lost Hearts

Try this, about 3.30 in. The look on the boy's face with that hurdy-gurdy playing in the background is still chilling...

ooh yes

I remember that being on one Christmas - maybe 1974 - terrified me and our kid who were in the house alone.

new

I have not seen that since I was a child. It scared the shit clean out of me back then. I had nightmares about that nun for a long time after it. I was also taught by them so I couldn't escape them. That and Salems Lot where the two most frightening things from my childhood .

Salem's Lot..

Woo.. I remember that. Lots of playground discussion the next day. From memory, it had David Soul in it. And was atmosspheric and very creepy with only a couple of make-you-jump moments.

Salem's Lot

Available on dvd pretty cheap

Remember finding this scene scary - not sure if it stands up to the test of time but anything at a window always works for me

Aaaargh!

I didn't sleep for, ooh, about two years after that was first on. I still think of it whenever I'm in a dark room with the curtains open.

When i was about 11

this was shown during the school holidays and it certainly scared the bejaysus out of me although i pretended that i was totally unaffected as i whistled my way to my bedroom.

The next morning i was woken from my slumber by a knock at my window. Thing is we lived on the 7th foor of a tower block in Shepherds Bush. Suddenly visions of the undead flooded my mind. Even though it was day light i was so petrified that for around half an hour i did not move an inch. I was in the flat alone.

Eventually i plucked up the courage to take a peek behind the curtain, to see a fairly unhappy window cleaner hanging on to the platform that had got stuck, partially diagonal, right outside my window.....

Never watched this again for years!

The Changes, BBC 1975...

Made Doctor Who seem like Jackanory. Scared the 6 year old me out of my tiny mind...

Ol' Sister no-face

I remember this well and was actually quite scared, but at the time of the broadcast I remember laughing at how lame it was with my (older) brothers.

Armchair Theatre had a few of these scary moments - the one I remember is a small child's doll pointing at someone and shouting "Vengeance! Vengeance!" in a very horrible voice.
Outwardly I was no doubt saying "Har! Har! How pathetic!" but inwardly I was whimpering.

And another thing

Could it be that these things are more scary because they were done so cheaply and with low quality special effects? The old black and white BBC production of 1984 with Peter Cushing is far superior to the film, in my opinion, because of this. Same applies to The Midwich Cuckoos.

A clever CGI generated twenty-headed monster going "GRAA!!!" in outer space is nowhere near as frightening as something routine turning evil. When the lead character notices birds congregating (?) on power lines, I think that is particularly chilling. I know it's a Hitchcock film. I think it's called "Power Lines".

Sapphire and Steel

This one, about the photos, and the one about the railway station spooked me.

Quatermass

Still stands the test of time

Watched Quatermass & the Pit recently with my 11yo and we both enjoyed it. There's a good box set of BBC Quatermass

Quatermass & the Pit

A tremendous and very underrated movie, with an incredibly bleak ending, bearing in mind (SPOILER ALERT!) that "the devil" is defeated. I know remakes never tend to work, but this is one story I think could benefit from a decent budget, especially the martian scenes...

And going back to an earlier point, no, CGI ain't ever scary.

Saw the name of the thread and was immediately reminded of

... the one that terrified my ten year old self and my sisters..Went to read/post and it was the first one! We remembered it as The Black Nun....Debating with self as to whether I'll have the cojones to watch it when I get home from work....

vorgongod | 23 November 2009 - 9:04am

Quatermass..

..and the Pit. Couldn't help but notice that a couple of the scenes of urban destruction in the "Changes" clip appeared to have been lifted from the film version. The crumbling terraced houses and the toppling crane definitely look familiar.

The Twilight Zone

As a 12 year old kid growing up in the mid '80s, I felt so grown up when I finally got my own room, complete with 14 inch b+w television set.

I mainly watched that naughty Channel 4 on my tv (usually in the vain hope of seeing some late night tit and bum ) but vividly recall seeing the old Twilight Zone re-runs for the 1st time. So many of these wonderful episodes still stick in my noggin, but the classic Nightmare At 20,000 Feet with William Shatner as a nervous airline passenger who can see a gremlin eating the plane's wing takes some beating. Check it out below from 8:45 - it still packs a wallop.

The Stone Tape,

shown at Xmas in 1972, scared the shit out of the fifteen-year-old me. Everyone else had gone to bed, and I wished I had too by the end.

Thankfully, this clip is less terrifying:

Anyone remember

La Cabina - The Telephone Box? Taped it by accident back in the day and throughout my teenage years had a foot wedged in the door when I made a call.

0
sleepytigercub | 25 November 2009 - 4:59pm

Yes! A classic

I saw it as a short film accompanying something like Gremlins.

Not sure if old TV ads are within the remit of the OP but there was the odd wonderful piece of work. There was once a car advert where a baby on a lecturn addresses a vast crowd of other babies by use of gurgling goo-goo gagas. The subtitles tell us that he is demanding more safety in cars (something like that). If you can imagine the logistical nightmare of filming a hundred-odd babies in a room - there were no special effects - that in itself is a great achievement.

Thanks!

I remember this vividly but didn't know the name. It does seem to be on Youtube and I'll have a look when I get home from work.

What was that one ...?

Late 70's, Sunday afternoon (I think), about a modern day girl who went back to where there were baddies intent on doing her harm. She would be brought back to the modern day by seeing her reflection. Anyone?
