Sarah Kennedy - "not drunk" shocker
Posted by Thomas the Rhymer on 22 September 2010 - 7:57am.
Despite various hints all over the media (including The Word's own podcast) there is no truth in the rumour that Sarah Kennedy was drunk when broadcasting on Radio 2. There must, as they say, be some other explanation.

There is
She was rubbish. And mad.
Other Explanation
Kennedy Denies Being "Any Good"
In a furious broadside against the BBC today, former Radio Two Dawn Patrol host Sarah Kennedy fervently denied that she had been "any good" while at the microphone.
"I keep reading that I am beloved and a national treasure but it's simply not true. I know there were a couple of shows that apparently were up to scratch but I cannot be judged by those," she said in a statement. Later, speaking from her home at Oddbins The Whiskey People, a clearly emotional Sarah went on. "How can people say I was any good. It is so wrong. I turned up, I droned on and often fell asleep at the mike. Not only that but I was raking it in at a national radio station for 17 years without the slightest interest in music. Will no-one step forward and remind people of this?"
Against claims that she performed several of her shows stone cold sober, Ms Kennedy responded, "This is all I keep hearing. Look, do you really think its possible I could have delivered the sort of shows I do in that state? It's so unfair - I have an enemy at the BBC and I want to know who it is."
At this point the entire Radio Two staff stood up and said "I'm Spartacus."
The BBC are currently in talks with former Liberal leader Charles Kennedy as a replacement.
Chortle
Thumbs up for an amusing start to the day.
I remember a hideous period in the 90's...
... when I couldn't get radio 4 and had to get up too early for Wogan, leaving me a choice of Sarah Kennedy or Sara Cox. It was horrible.
The Sara Cox Show
Like sharing your taxi with a drunk woman.
But not in a good way
My daughters impersonate Sara Cox
by shouting "ooh me boobies" in a lisping Manc accent whenever she comes on the radio - we're bringing them up wrong I know
Manc accent?
Shurley shome misstake. Blinkin' Bolton twang luv. Or to be more precise Little Lever. Nuff said.
Apologies for that
No excuse - my wife's from Wigan, accent broad as you like and very proud of it too!
Have never listened closely to Ms Cox since she suffers badly from DJ Wittering - actually is DJ Wittering an American crime novelist?
Well I don't mind her
As I said on a previous thread, she may be the human embodiment of the Daily Mail, but I always found her strangely comforting.
Me too.
She's a fairly aged lady getting up at an ungodly hour. Is it not possible what she says is true that tiredness occasionally made her slur her words. It would me.
On top of that, without wanting to appear uncool, if she did have such a drink problem then is it really a laughing matter?
"strangely comforting"
Good phrase that. Sums up the SK listening experience for me too. When i first started listening to R2 in the mornings - fed up with 5 or 4, can't remember why though Nick"y" Campbell's probably in there somewhere - I couldn't believe Sarah Kennedy. Couldn't believe that a show that sounded so amateurish was on the biggest national network. A daft old bat wittering aimlessly and reading bits out of the paper. But I gradually got used to it and began to realise that the show's ambience - stumbling around half-awake, only stimulus required caffeine - suited most households at that time of day.
She was no slick pro. But then nor was John Peel. He wittered about his home life, his interests etc. same as SK did. Despite it being "all about the music" for him, he played records at the wrong speed. He cast himself as the shambling amateur let loose in a professional studio, yet he connected strongly with an audience. So did Sarah Kennedy. And a damn sight bigger one than John Peel's. She may not be to everybody's taste and i can understand that (because she wasn't really much to mine) but she did a difficult job - anyone who says broadcasting on a major network is just "playing records on the radio" should try it - for a long time and for that she deserves a bit of respect. And if she does have some sort of problem, perhaps a bit of sympathy and kindness.
Lashing out at former colleagues, feeling persecuted, may be undignified, but it's understandable in someone who's been wrenched from a job suddenly and unexpectedly.
Radio 2 has refreshed itself pretty successfully over the few years I've been listening to it. Jimmy Young gave way to Jeremy Vine. Wogan to Chris Evans. etc. These things have to happen and there's no doubt that SK's time was up.
But I'm not going to join in the sneering. I wish the old prune well.
Interesting
She said in her interview that nothing other than "Orange juice and water" passed her lips in the mornings before her broadcasts. And I believe her.
It's the three bottles of Bulgarian merlot from the night before which are probably of greater relevance. A few hours in bed do not render one miraculously sober.
I did enjoy the letter in The Telegraph complaining about Radio 2 being taken over by these oikish ex-Radio 1 types, the writer being obviously unaware of the origins of the previous generation of R2 jocks..
Im with
Mr Lowe on this one. She wasn't to the FPOs taste, but I found her just the thing for that early in the morning, and whatever the reason for the end of her career, it's a shame it fizzled out the way it did. Still, who knows? Once she's caught up on all the sleep she missed, she may reappear on a radio near you at some future date. The question now is: Who do we want to replace her? Could Lynn Bowles step up to the plate? Should Alex Lester be allowed a lay in and a later start. Does Richard Allinson warrant a permanent commission? Or is there a local radio hero who deserves a chance? All answers on a postcard to Radio 2...
Alex Lester
