Sail of the century: get onboard with The Word and C.W.Stoneking for vaudevillian river trip!

Alex Gold's picture

In the wake of our Word in Your Ear concerts – featuring Pugwash, Neil Hannon and Wilko Johnson – The Word is taking to the water. Aboard a boat called the Dixie Queen (below, right).

Styled like an old-time Mississippi paddlesteamer, this impressive barque will weigh anchor at Tower of London pier and meander sedately to the Thames Barrier and back – on deck, the world’s finest vaudevillian jungle bluesman CW Stoneking (above, left), his magificent ensemble The Primitive Horn Orchestra and a crew of Word staff and contributors. A Hepworth/Ellen-piloted podcast will be recorded, a well-stocked bar will be gently drained, and the sights of Old London Town lovingly photographed – or, quite possibly, ignored. We cast-off at 2.30 and return in time for tea at 5.30pm. More details are located here.

The Word magazine’s Summer Dixieland Jamboree is on the afternoon of Sunday 24 July and a splendid time is guaranteed for all. Tickets, a mere £35 (£12.50 for under-18s), can be purchased at http://www.wegottickets.com/event/124911

Splendid idea

What a lovely way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Should we bring our ukeleles?

Thanks Alex, I'll have me one of those tickets. And congratulations on "...in the wake of...". Arf.

Really looking forward to it. I'll be seeing CW the following weekend too at Womad.

Although not mentioned implicitly...

...I assume that there will be opportunities for river piracy and plunder of Canary Wharf's ample gold reserves.

We'll be there...

Mrs K and I.

But don't let that put you off.

But Andy...

...if you just bring your tennis racquet you could play along faultlessly with air banjo! :-D

I'd love to go - might almost have convinced myself to fly into London for the day/weekend, but I'm on hols in Scotland at the time. Another time.

A Strange Day At Work

The decorators where I was working today didn't have the usual radio blasting out Magic or Heart FM.
Instead we were treated to CW Stoneking's album, played all the way through at least twice and then some rather good Acid Jazz.

I will be there

I've sorted out the Kwells and water wings. Anyone else going?

I won't be there

I'm afraid I won't be there. Much as I love meeting up with members of the Word Massive and members of Word HQ, and much as I have enjoyed previous Word gigs, the timing and cost of this event means this is a non-starter for me.

I live in the Midlands, but have travelled down to London to some of the Word in Your Ear gigs and Massive Mingles. Given that the boat trip is on a Sunday, I would want to include Mrs W (who is anything but a FPO) in the afternoon's entertainment. Ignoring travel costs, £70 for two tickets to see CW Stoneking and a trip down the Thames is a bit steep. I'll save my money for the next Word weekday evening pub gig.

I just wrote something on the other thread...

so I'll copy it here:

"Anyway, it's a good idea and something a bit different and I hope you all have a great time!

One suggestion though - is there any chance The Word might organise a Word of Mouth gig or Event outside London some day? I mean I can get to London easily so it's OK for me - but what about for those further afield - Glasgow, Birmingham, Manchester, Dublin etc?"
