Safari

jazzjet's picture

I've probably raised this before but, more often than not, Safari hangs when trying to access the Word site. This means that I get the 'Not Responding' message and have to Force Quit. No such problems with Chrome however. Always loads first time. Any idea why? I've got the latest version of Mac OSX and Safari.

Flash! Ah-aah!

The problem might be with the Flash animated ads. Make sure you have the latest version of Flash Player from Adobe. If that doesn't work, you could try a Flash blocker extension for Safari.

Safari

has been just awful recently, not just on the Word site but on pretty much everything. I used to use Firefox occasionally but I've given up on Safari and use Firefox exclusively now

I don't understand these threads

There are about ten web browsers available for Mac. And they're all free.

If you not happy with Browser #1, then why not just use another one? And use a password manager to synchronise your bookmarks between browsers.

Why do people get so emotional about web broswers?

I don't get emotional

when they work like they're supposed to. The emotion is annoyance when they crash / freeze just as you need them to do their job.

Good computer software should just do it's work and blend into the background of what you're trying to do with it, in my opinion. This particularly applies to Browsers.

If software is performing in a way

that doesn't meet your expectations, then it's not 'good' software. But it's also only reasonable if you are—or someone else is—paying for it. Like I said, just use another browser (I think I have four installed on my machine).

Or are the Mac owners simply experiencing uneasy feelings of disloyalty by not using Safari?

Mac owner here...

Have been Firefox all the way for years.

In fact, Safari now won't open on my MacBook at all. When I click it, instead of doing that little bouncy opening-up thingy, the icon spins round 180 degrees, turns its back on me, and sulks.

Switched to firefox and may never go back.

have to force quit

Safari here too - started happening about a week ago. Doesn't happen all the time - about 30% of the time I'd guess. Firefox works fine.

Likewise..

takes an age to load, but once it's up and running it's fine. Will persevere.

Google Chrome here.

Very fast, very stable and if there is a crash, it takes out the tab, not the browser.

iPad

Happens on the iPad too. Based on this and iTunes I have to conclude writing software isn't Apple's thing really.

Um.

I've been having some problems with Safari recently, too, including the occasional crash. In the past 100% of crashes could be traced to problems with the Flash plugin, and installing a flash blocker such as ClickToFlash resolved them.

However recently I've been getting other crashes. My last was triggered by visiting a fairly simply laid-out page hosted on Oracle's ThinkQuest site. I also seem to suffer from excessive memory leaks, as Safari slows down over time as more and more of it gets swapped out to disk.

Word

I've really only been having problems with The Word site and then only about half the time. I know you can use other browsers but you get used to the layout and features so it can be a minor pain to switch around.

Chrome

I've now given up on Safari and switched to Chrome - primarily because of problems with the Word site. So far impressed with the speed and I've got it looking pretty much how I want it. Anyone in the Massive familiar with Chrome and can recommend any essential extensions, apps etc?

Safari 5.1

Safari 5.1 was released yesterday. The 32-bit Intel version now has different processes for Flash plug-ins and the rest of the browser, improving performance and preventing a Flash crash from bringing down everything else.

I'll try it for a few days and report back.
