Ryan Adams and The Caridinal, Birmigham 17/11/08
Some gigs are just about perfect, and I have to say this is as close as i'm likley to get.
Ryan is one of these artists that people seem to love or hate, his prolific out put, and unablilaty to say with in anyone elses definition of himself, seem to rub people up the wrong way, and brand him as disengenuous. However, as he has reported in interviews, he does spend pretty much all of his time 'dicking around on a guitar, writing songs',
After the 2005 Trilogy, and the somewhat underwhelming Easy Tiger [an album of material, not good enough to get on Demolistion, an album of stuff not good enough to get on Heartbreaker and Gold] the release of CARDINOLOGY, was awaited witbated breath. And actually contains some great songs, including Crossed Out Name, Magik, and monday night's set openner, Cobwebs.
Introducing then as 'The Cardinals' may be Adams attempt to retreat from his Saviour of rock and roll mantal that was placed upon him with the realese of Gold [or as discribed on a previous occation as 'that fucking record']
Adams seems to have make some peace with this album, playing both rescue blues, and when the stars go blue from it, some thing that seems unthinkable 2 years ago. Still popular on the set list seems to be material from Cold Roses, Easy Tiger [just to prove there are some good songs on there] and of course the new album.
Multiple vocal and guitar harmonies, akin to American Beauty greatful dead, [with a little Dark star, for good measure] where still the order of the day, with inter song banter kept to a minimum, but mainly related to Giant Calculators, and the ablity of a double necked Guitar to rip a whole in time and space.
Special mention to Pedal steel guitar player, Jon Graboff as Guitar Hero of the night.
For many the apperance of this classic from heartbreaker was a highlight. For me in one of my favorite venues [simple for it's size [FU&K the NEC!!!] right at the front, it was just about perfect.

i love that
tell me you were both typing at the same time . So very funny, i guess the youf would want to laugh out loud , in an abbreviated style
Really?
I went to see Ryan Adams at Cambridge on Sunday and it was one of the most fogettable gigs I've ever been too. It was probably more forgetable than the last time i saw him there, but I wouldn't know because I've forgotten that gig entirely.
He didn't speak for the entire evening except to say, 'We're The Cardinals from the United States of America' - well duh.
Every song sounded the same and he stood at the side of the stage without any lights on him for thew whole show. Naturally he refused to play any of his better known songs and instead stcuk mostly to the last two or three albums. The tedious show spluttered to a halt and they wandered off. No-one even bothered to call for an encore and the lights quickly came up.
I love Ryan Adams' music dearly but having seen him twice now my opinion of him as a performer is that he is lazy, arrogant and very boring. I won't be spending any more of my hard earned money going to see him in future.
again i can only say that he
again i can only say that he must have been on form in birmingham
"Unthinkable two years ago"
I saw Adams two years ago. He played Gold's The Rescue Blues, Sylvia Plath and New York, New York; also Come Pick Me Up and a further five songs from Heartbreaker.
Just saying.
Me too...
I've seen Ryan pretty much every time he's played London for the las decade and he has indeed always done a few from Gold and a couple from Heartbreaker.
I also really like Easy Tiger. I think it's comfortably superior to Cardinology. Is it really full of things not good enough to get on Demolition, given it came out several years after Demolition, with about six other records between them?
I saw him in Brixton the other day and it was good, without being great. It was a little dull at times and there were too many extended instrumental passages, well played though they were. Oddly enough, he played very little from Cold Roses, an album he has mined extensively for material for other gigs in the last few years.
He was brilliant at Hammersmith Apollo last year/2006 (can't remember exactly when it was), I thought.
