RSS Feeds - How to never miss a Massive blog post again
Posted by VincePacket on 1 March 2011 - 11:27pm.
At the inaugural Thames Valley Mingle last week, we got onto the subject of missing blog posts.
I mentioned using the RSS functionality of the site to avoid the problem and was met with a mixture of knowing nods, blank stares and looks of panic.
I was going to write up how to do it but decided it was quicker to record a little movie.
So, it's 4 minutes long (despite my rather hopeful plan to do it in 3 at the start).
Hope it helps. If you stick your questions in the comments, I'll answer them. If anyone else wants to jump in and explain in a better way, go for it, I won't be offended, this was just a one-shot recording with me waffling over the top.

Nice job! Do you mind if I add that to the FAQ page?
A couple of things - there is a lag between what you're seeing on the site and what your RSS reader is showing because we cache pages for readers who aren't logged in, and the cache updates every ten minutes. Second, I see you're running an ad-blocking programme. You know this means that Mark Ellen's children will go hungry tonight?
Add away
As for the ad blocking - sort of not guilty. I recorded on the family PC rather than my Mac. Because the kids use the PC I have it locked up tighter than a camel's arse in a sandstorm. No ads, script blocking, parental controls, the works.
I like the word ads so the Ellen Jrs should at least be able to afford a few baked beans.
I believe you
And thanks again for doing this - it's very thoughtful of you.
So remember that
Vince uses his dirty Mac more than he is PC
HEY!!!!
I'll have you know my Mac is all shiny and silver.
I use Chrome on a Mac
Is there an extension or app that would do a good job without me having to login to Google reader? RSS feeds into my Mail are not that great - its just a link the web page and doesn't give very much detail. I've not really bothered with them before but it if there is an app I can leave running that would automatically update that would be very good.
ps - have a up for the very fine work.
Well...
There a plenty of standalone RSS feed readers, but I haven't used any for years (I used to use NewsNetWire), simply because I prefer to keep as much as I can in the cloud. Google Reader is the best I've used, but since I use Gmail for personal and work mail it means I'm always logged in anyway.
Thanks
I'll give google reader a go as well as try some of the chrome extensions below. Not sure if I'm missing something neat or may end up with information overload.
Try this link and see if anything takes your fancy

Thanks
will have a gander.
thanks for that, vince...
not sure what your tipple of choice is, but this should cure what ails yer anyway...
Feeds for nights out / nights in / reads
Are there feeds for these? Couldn't find them, although I tried a few variations - apologies if that caused a little spike of 404 errors.
No, which is a shame.
.
They do now
Although they're pretty basic - post title only, no full content. That'll have to wait for a major software upgrade.

Let me know if you spot any bugs.
They seem
to work fine, thanks for doing that, my tracking is now complete :-)
Thanks...
...and no bugs seen here.
nice one,vince
thanks for that.
I learn something new everyday
in this place. Marvellous. Thank you Vince.
I don't even know what an RSS feed is.
Does it say so in the video? Scared to watch it. Techy stuff bad... confusing...
