When this whole 'doing the classic album in its entirety' thang first took off, people would almost certainly have made jokes along the lines of "Hurr hurr, Lou Reed will be performing Metal Machine Music next!"
And lo, so it has come to pass.
Laurie Anderson should give him a clip round the ear and tell him to stop being so silly.
… on the board ever listened to Metal Machine Music? I'm not suggesting it's not crap; rather, it just seems to be one of those records that's routinely derided by people who've never heard it.
I used to play it at closing time when I worked in a record shop, to prevent customers from lingering. I actually don't mind it - I have a copy which I play very occasionally, but I need to be in the right mood, and I fully accept that most people will find it unlistenable.
Metal Machine Music describes the sound quite well.
What really irks me is how much attention the narky little twerp gets for his whole career, even the deliberate stinkers like this one and the string of completely forgotten albums in the late 70s and early 80s. I don't get why there isn't a backlash. Just because he was in the VU and flounced around with Bowie and Iggy in Berlin seems to have made him critically untouchable.
I'm playing in a band at the moment with a bloke who thinks that Lou Reed and Iggy (the insurance salesman) can do no wrong and it's very annoying, this bloke is forty by the way. True, there are some fine VU songs but even on his "normal" records, he can barely play the guitar and his voice has no appeal to me. He gets an awful lot of acclaim for man who's made an awful lot more crap records than good ones. Note that the article states that no songs or vocals will feature, can you imagine how shite that is going to be and yet there'll be hundreds of "serious fans" telling us how great it is.
I'm not saying all he's done is crap. I really like New York. I think that he is infinitely forgiven for his rubbish records. Metal Machine Music and most of the Arista years. But just my opinion. There might be a good playlist to be had from the lesser material, anyone up for a challenge?
I didn't enjoy it much but I gritted my teeth and made it to the end, first time. As my friend Jimmy described it (similar to Fraser above) "pub-clearing music"
he's not playing the album in its entirety, or indeed at all ... it's all new atonal noise. Yea!
"The gigs are influenced by Reed's 1975 album 'Metal Machine Music' – although the album itself will not be being played. No songs or vocals will feature either."
I was so looking forward to my favourite bit that goes "SSKKKRRRREEEEEEEEAAAAOOOOWWWWRRRRRREEEEEEEE", but now I'm going to have to settle for "RRRRAAAANNNGGGWWWWRRRREEOOOOORRRRRREEEE" instead.
"It's hard to say what Lou Reed had in mind when he made Metal Machine Music, and Reed has done little to clarify the issue over the years, though he summed it up quite pointedly in an interview in which he said, "Well, anyone who gets to side four is dumber than I am.""
it cocked a great snook when it came out at people buying any old rubbish. Now, in these days of deluxe versions and general reverence for the past I don't blame him for repeating the jest.
Modern life is too weird...

No I'm not a fan.
Agreed

Garbage.
Much as I love Iggy
The album "Party" would struggle to make a decent single.
A-side - "Bang Bang"
B-side "TIme Won't Let Me"
Lou Reed...
Transformer
Berlin
Coney Island Baby
Rock n Roll Animal
Blue Mask
New York
Yep, all crap.
Not the point

Yes I have

Thank God he's not venturing 'oop north.....
imagine all them whippets howling along.
Actually ...
he's not playing the album in its entirety, or indeed at all ... it's all new atonal noise. Yea!

that's my favourite bit too ! I've got it as my ringtone!
ringtone
I think laughing Lou made a few ring tones on the original. Sure smells like it.
Allmusic reports ...

Whether deliberate or not
it cocked a great snook when it came out at people buying any old rubbish. Now, in these days of deluxe versions and general reverence for the past I don't blame him for repeating the jest.
nice
Taking money off loyal fans to prove how stupid they are. What a lovely man.
I don't think
his percentage of average/poor albums to great ones is any worse than other icons such as Young and Dylan.
For Metal Machine Music read Journey Through The Past or Self Portrait. They've all made stinkers.
