Rock's least electrifying performers

Brookster's picture

There's many a debate — probably several on here already — on which artists performed blistering sets at various points in their careers. James Brown's famous performance of Please Please Please; the Beatles at Shea Stadium perhaps.

Then I came across this clip of a TV performance by Crispian St Peters singing his hit Pied Piper. His stage persona consists of cowering in the corner like a terrified nine-year-old in a school play and, towards the end of the song, he's managed to shuffle two-thirds the way to the front, while mostly staring at the floor. While never straying from the security of some giant cut-out letters.

So who are rock's damp squibs?

Jason Pierce of Spiritualized.

Hides at the side of the stage, always sitting down, never opens his mouth other than to sing.

I love Spiritualized. Seen them loads of times. But charismatic they are not.

This is worth the wait

Either sit through the extended opening titles or fast-forward to 3.25 for possibly the most understated piece of stage craft ever committed to video. The (very good) live album actually starts with it, and never fails to raise a smile.

Dido...

All the personality of a dishcloth.

not fair

Some overused mannerisms maybe, but I think she does a fine job on, for example, White Flag.

Paul Simon

Great songwriter. Uncharasmatic stage presence to say the least.

One of the greatest bands ever

Are also one of the most unpreposessing. Does it make any difference?

Does it make any difference?

Guess that depends on whether you are at the show, or listening on your ipod. Two different art forms requiring different talents.

Surely you jest..

Spiritualized

I'm a fan, but Jason Pierce is a master of the art of non-performance. Always stage right, facing in to the band and often sat on a stool.

Harry Nilsson

Brookster's original post reminds me of Harry Nilsson, looking embarrassed and exposed on this clip

What do you expect..

With reference to the original post, what else do you expect from someone whose name is Crispian St. Peter?
