Rocking Rocker Rocker's Rock Songs

David Wright's picture

I'd kind of forgotten about this Strait's classic until my brother played me a clip on his old video recorder last night. I think the version from Alchemy has the edge but this is still good.
It made me think of all the classic songs with rock related themes in their title;"Rocking In The Free World", "Rocking All Over The World" and "We Will Rock You" etc etc.
Bit of an obvious thread I know, but let's rock out this bank holiday weekend and hear your nominations for the best songs with a rock related theme in the title.

Am I allowed this?

First choice would be Jerry Lee Lewis' version, but this is more than good enough:

One cover version...

that Westlife will never attempt.

Several identikit amoebas rise from stools... "I'm a rocker / I'm a roller..."

Patrick Crowther | 1 May 2010 - 10:43am

Queen - Brighton Rock

I know they are not the most popular band around these parts, but this is a good 'un.....

Patrick Crowther | 1 May 2010 - 4:29pm

Lord help me

I've got that on vinyl somewhere. Loved it because the the Vance show. Back in those pre-internet days when you had to ring up the BBC to find out what something like this was called, which I did. My room mate at college used one of their older albums to soundtrack his home movie - sounded like a heavy/prog Benny Hill theme. Now Mr Morse is the fret twiddler for Purple....and not a particularly good fit either for mine.

Dunno why, but here goes....actually I do have a reason, it's quite amusing to see some of these tracks/artists up against each other, and it would only ever happen alphabetically.

AC/DC - For those about to rock, Hard as a rock, Rock and roll ain't noise pollution, Rock 'n roll dream, She likes rock and roll, Rock n roll train, Can't stop rock n roll, Rockin all the way, Whiskey on the rocks, let there be rock, Rock n roll damnation, rocker
Bob Mould - I hate alternative rock
Chuck Berry - rock n roll music, Sweet little rock n roller
Crowded House - So you want to be a rock n roll star
Culture - Lion rock
David & David - A rock for the fogotten
Def Leppard - Rocket
Eels - Rock hard times, PS You rock my world
Elton John - Crocodile rock
Fatboy Slim - Rockefeller skank
Fountains of Wayne - Please don't rock me tonight
Four Tet - My angel rocks back and forth
Guadalcanal Diary - Michael Rockefeller
Ian Dury - Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll
John Hiatt - Rock of your love
Led Zep - Rock & Roll
Machine Gun Fellatio - The mirror ball's starting to rock mk II
Muddy Waters - Rock me
Neil Young - Rockin in the free world
Not Drowning Waving - A selling of a rock
Powderfinger - Rockin Rocks
Queen - We will rock you
REM - (Don't go back to) Rockville
Ramones - Sheena is a punk rocker
Rory Gallagher - Cradle rock
Skulker - Rock nugget (a brilliant one hit wonder of energy that is)
Spinal tap - the majesty of rock
Status Quo - Rockin all over the world
Steve Gibbons Band - Gave his life to rock n roll
Clash - Rock the casbah, Clash city rockers
Dandy Warhols - Hit rock bottom
Darkness - Love on the rocks with no ice
Kinks - supersonic rocket ship
Mothers of Invention - Help I'm a rock
Stones - Rocks off
Velvets - Rock & Roll
Lizzy - Roisin Dubh-A rock legend
Things of stone and wood - Rock this boat (another great 1 - 1+half hit wonder)
Toad the wet sprocket - Hobbit on the rocks
XTC - Sgt Rock, Rocket from a bottle

There. I don't feel any better though.

And the nomination for best track with 'Rock' in it is....For Those About To Rock. Probably single handedly responsible for 50% of my hearing loss when those bloody cannons go off at the concert.

Harold Holt | 2 May 2010 - 3:46am

Wobbly footage...

But solid rock!

0
Slotbadger | 1 May 2010 - 2:02pm

Solid Rockers

I wondered where Knopfler nicked the title for his Solid Rock from! I Didn't realise Dylan had a song with the same title!

0
David Wright | 1 May 2010 - 3:58pm

The Majesty of Rock

0
Sheev | 2 May 2010 - 7:49am

Rock me all night long

And let's not forget that, in blues vernacular, 'rock' is often a euphemism for another four letter word...

0
Lucas Hare | 2 May 2010 - 9:56am

A couple of late additions

Argent from 1973 - although half the world seems to think this is a Kiss song
