Robyn Hitchcock

anth25's picture

Having been lucky enought to get a ticket for Glastonbury in the resale on Sunday I have been looking through the lineup and noticed Robyn Hitchcock playing on the Sunday.

I am not overly familiar with his work but have come across a few of his songs recently that have struck a chord and got my interest.

Can anyone guide me as to a good place to start?

Also has anyone seen him live recently? Is he worth seeing?

Any guidance greatly appreciated

Cheers

Probably my favourite musician/songwriter of the last 30 years

You should definitely try to see him if you can, as much for the deadpan Peter Cook/Monty Python surreal between-song rambling as the music. Very much an acquired taste, and a lot of sensible people find him irritatingly quirky, but if you like what you've heard so far you can't go far wrong with "I Often Dream Of Trains" or "Eye" for the solo acoustic stuff, or "Gotta Let This Hen Out" or "Ole Tarantula" if you fancy something more rocking. If you can find a copy of the "Storefront Hitchcock" DVD you can get to see him play live in a shop window in New York!

any man who pens a song called

'Gotta Let this Hen Out' should be knighted

Hear hear

... and the lyric:
"Brenda's Iron Sledge / Please don't call me Reg / It's not my name"

Not recently, no

but over the years he's not been known to stray greatly from the Byrds-via-Grantchester template. I had the very good fortune to see him when Peter Buck out of that REM was handling rhythm guitar duties (and loading his own amp on and off stage). If you want to own an album my call would be a comp;ation called Uncorrected Personality Traits, or Element of Light, although that is (sweet jesus where did the time go!?) already twenty five years old.

I agree with Ben. "Ole Tarantula" is a t'riffic album...

... as is "Spooked" from '04. I'm also partial to his first album: "Black Snake Diamond Role."

I've just counted the number of RH albums on my iTunes. There's 23 of 'em and I love 'em all. Well, mostly.

As any fule kno

Fegmania is the epoch of a massively talented man.

My wife and my dead wife, the man with the lightbulb head, heaven, etc etc

Bringing it up to date though Goodnight Oslo is also a masterpiece in my humble view
