Robert Wyatt

Ola Claesson's picture

I´ve stumbled upon the beauty of Robert Wyatt´s music in the form of his latest studio release Comicopera. Where should I go next?

Cuckooland

Cuckooland comes highly recommended, it was my first intro to him and still my favourite.

anywhere

I don't believe he's done anything bad. I'd recommend all hos solo work.

'Rock Bottom' is a fabulous record...

but also give 'Shleep' a listen - it features the beautiful Maryan.

He has a new album

out next month which includes his take on some jazz standards. By strange coincidence I just ordered his EP's album this am which has the aforementioned Shipbuilding plus I'M a believer. I would nominate Rock Bottom as my favourite of his but Comicopera is excellent.

Matching Mole...

...won't be to everyone's taste, I guess, but a whole Cd of this generally gentle, whimsical fusion has a mesmerising effect. Go for 'On The Radio' if you feel tempted...

I rather like Wyatt's version of

Victor Jara's "Te recuerdo Amanda", originally on the "Amber and the Amberines" EP.

At Last I am Free

His cover of the Chic song is a thing of wonder. Rock Bottom is the key to it all, I think, though Ruth is Stranger than Richard is beautiful, too.
