Robbie Savage - My new football hero

Leedsboy's picture

Listen to this - Robbie gives a journo a proper hard time. You can hear the journo squirm. Refreshing to hear a footballer who cares about his team.

Really?

I thought he came out of that really badly. The journo managed to come back from the initial assult quite well.

In truth

I think the journo got back in the last couple of minutes (and I posted the link about half way through my first listen). But the silence when Robbie asks him to substantiate the rumour was priceless.

Reporter: Gordon, can we have a quick word, please?

Strachan: Velocity.

I always found that to be a layman's joke.......

.....because velocity is merely a vector quantity to describe the rate of change of position of an object (as opposed to speed being a scalar quantity not requiring direction) but regardless of this an object may have a slow or quick velocity or speed and it is relative anyway so merely using the word velocity does not imply something is "quick". I know this may make me sound like a smart arse (cue intense Massive study of this contribution for error and thus prove I am not a smart arse but a fallible buffoon) but it's all part of the education. Strachan's ok but his judgement has always been questioned ever since he only managed to get one leg up that advertising board (good goal though). Peace and love, Marsonator.

Listen to the interview again

and dissect what he is saying. I think you will find he is the main problem. Put bluntly he is a big headed individual with an over inflated opinion of himself. At Birmingham he had a career threatening neck injury but when the club offered him a 4 year contract because of his previous talismanic performances he snatched their hand off. Within 6 months when it became apparent that he had fully recovered from the injury and his performances were again excellent he manufactured a move to Blackburn allegedly because it was nearer to his ailing parents house in Wrexham. Fact is he was nearer to them in Birmingham. In fairness when he is committed he can be a very effective player but I saw him last year for Derby and his legs have clearly gone. They tried to offload him to Brighton but they sent him back - not sure whether it was performance related or whether his wages were too high. Know one thing though, signing him on a 5 year contract at the age of about 31 and at the wages he was on was a big mistake for Derby. They are paying for it now, thats for sure.

I thought he took a pay cut

to go to Derby rather than Sunderland. Not sure of the fans view of him at Derby though. I would suggest that any footballer in his early 30's would sign the longest contract offered to him (and so he should) and if it's a poor one for the club then really that is the clubs fault.

I still like the fact that he decided to challenge the journo rather than blather on about the match.

Last Saturday...

... it was delightful to see my team humiliate Savage and his Derby boys and, thanks to the snow, we ended up being the main highlights of the Beeb's football league package.
