RIP Mickey Gee

Crowdedmouse's picture

One of the greatest guitarists ever produced by this country has passed away in Cardiff. Born in Wales Mickey Gee was one of those unsung heroes that you'd have heard on disc but whose name you'd probably never known. Here he is with long time friend Dave Edmunds.

Sad

Used to see Mickey a lot in the late 70's and early 80's playing in numerous bands in Swansea and Cardiff. Particularly remember nights down in the old Coach House cellar playing with the Trembling Knees. Always seemed to have that mischievous smile.

Agreed. There are some

Agreed. There are some recorded testimonies to his work ( the famous lead on I Hear You Knocking, the succinct solos on Shaky's first hits) but most of his best work was live, inevitably in a bar in Cardiff. He eschewed effects pedals saying that the only effects he needed were his fingers.

My favourite story regarding Mickey is of him sitting backstage after a Chet Atkins gig. The guitar was being passed around and Mickey played a Chet track that he had played along to at home. Suddenly Chet got animated, "Where did you learn that?" he exclaimed. Mickey told him that he had played the record several times and played along with it until he perfected it. "But" Chet said astonished, "that was a duet........"

Thank you for the music Gee man
