Riding on a train
Posted by Dave Amitri on 23 September 2009 - 10:59am.
I am sitting on the 10.42 out of Waterloo. I have Riding On A Train by The Pasadenas in my head. There must be better train songs out there. Help!

Last train to...
.. Clarksville or Glasgow Central.
Marrakesh Express.
Theme to Murder on the Orient Express (Richard Rodney Bennett).
Pacifc 231 (Honegger)

Hear My Train A Comin' - Jimi Hendrix
Casey Jones - Grateful Dead
Jumping Sombody Else's Train - The Waterboys
can't think of any more.
Bugger
You had to mention Casey Jones! All these choices and the theme tune has taken root.
Steamin and a rollin
The Dead and Casey Jones
I guess you're thinking of the theme to the TV series. The song of the same name by the Dead is nothing like it.
Yes I was aware of the difference
my attempt at humour while typing on my Blackberry, on a train must have been lost, woo wooo!
The antidote...
is the Pete Seeger version:
A-ha/Train of Thought
er, Train In Vain/Clash
Train To Skaville/Ethiopians
Trains and Boats and Planes/Burt Bacharach
I hear that train a-coming
Folsom Prison Blues - Johnny Cash
cash has loads of train songs
The Rock Island line for example. Oh and my favourite train song of all time:
http://open.spotify.com/track/1Z8G6xCE3z0nBl5lT1GXxe
He did at least one concept album to my knowledge set on the trains.
Cash's version is much better but here's an alternative for you:
oops
sorry to Nicodemus who mentioned the dylan version later in the tread (although posted before I did if you see what I mean) should have read it all before sticking in my oar.
It is a great song though so deserves to be mentioned twice.
Princess of the Night
by the mighty Saxon!
“Shake a hand, make a friend”
The Train Kept A-Rollin (or not in this case)
Of all the variants re-riffing this garage classic The Rogues version out-frugs all others
Robyn Hitchcock's "I Often Dream of Trains"
I often dream of trains when I'm alone
I ride on them into another zone
I dream of them constantly
Heading for paradise
Or Basingstoke or Reading
How about
this from the mighty Chigley of my childhood.
"Time flies by when I'm the driver of a train
And I ride on the footplate there and back again"
under bridges, over bridges,
To our destination
Let it happen, bass player
I'm sorry, but I have no choice but to post this
I'm sick of trees, take me to the city!
'Train Round the Bend' by the Velvet Underground
'Europe by Train' by The Divine Comedy
How about
'This Train' Sister Rosetta Tharpe
'5.15' The Who
'Night Train' Public Enemy or Guns and Roses
My thoughts were of
Kraftwerk's Trans-Europe Express
Waiting For A Train by Flash and the Pan
Waiting for a Train
What I'd have chosen (and the Kraftwerk) if I'd seen the blog sooner.
While searching online for this I've just discovered that Flash and the Pan wrote and performed the original version of "Walking in the Rain" (as later performed on Grace Jones' "Nightclubbing"). I never knew that, so thanks for the indirect prompt.
Midnight Train To Georgia
Gladys Knight & The Pips.
Woo-Hoo!

A few Trains songs
I was ...
... going to suggest 'Train Running Low on Soul Coal by XTC but you beat me to it... You could of course have the whole 'Big Express' album (which, in the days of walkman and cassette accompanied me on many a train journey) or Andy P's 'My Train is Coming' or indeed 'Tin Toy Clockwork Train'.
Long Train Running
by The Doobie Brothers is a seriously good record
Jimi Hendrix - Hear My Train a Comin'
in the the acoustic version - you can hear the ghost of Robert Johnson
How about

People Get Ready
by the Impressions
To call it the best train song ever would be to damn it with faint praise.
What about the brilliant
What about the brilliant 'Train To Nowhere' by Savoy Brown?
The train I ride goes to God knows where
I don't know - and I don't care...
Perfect for the 10.42 from Waterloo
What an unbelievable response
I love this place, my train journey literally flew by as I was fed a stream of new train based songs. At the same time I was able to read a debate on filesharing and the hardships of a musician trying to make a living, while finding out what your favourite buscuits are, marvellous. All thanks to the extra limb that is my Blackberry.
To complete the journey here's the song that started it.
Glad you posted that
couldn't place the track when I saw it in your post. Aah I remember it well now. Takes me back to a far simpler time. Top pop.
Get Carter theme
Dum de doo doo doo etc.
One Way Ticket To The Blues
awful song from the 50s
and another 'The Runaway Train' by Michael Holliday - I hated him as a kid (don't know why).
Down At The Tube Station At Midnight - The Jam
The Go-Betweens 'Here Comes A City'
Should also feature high on any list of songs that mention Dostoevsky
and not forgetting
down in the tube station at midnight by the jam (an early example of punk story-telling in regards to the joys of late night commuting).
big blue train - by rockabilly bassist lee rocker... all about a big blue train, presumably.
No-ones mentioned RT yet...
Train don't leave - Richard Thompson (on the acoustic cd of You? Me? Us?)
KLF - Last Train to Trancentral
Two more..
The Cure - Jumping on someone else's train
Cream - Traintime
Then I found this, and realised I am wasting my time:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_train_songs
Wikipedia list
It has Me And Bobby McGee as a train song. I always thought of it as a hitchhiking song.
If you're feeling maudlin...
"From A Late Night Train" by The Blue Nile.
The list's not over yet
Sorry I'm late, is there any punch left?
Freight Train - Annabel Lamb (beautiful song)
