Rhino's rather enticing "Original Album Series"...

Which bumper five album package do you think is head and shoulders above the rest?

Cor blimey, there's a lot of em.
5x Pogues LPs for £11 comes close, but so far for me 5x EBTG LPs for a fiver looks like the best bargain I've found yet.
EBTG
I love EBTG but my only observation would be is I'm not that bothered about the first two, and doesn't include "Worldwide" (now dissed by Ben Watt but I like it) and "Amplified Heart" which is utterly brilliant.
Incidentaly, referencing the 80s discussions, I would LOVE "Idlewild" to be remixed and retouched to remove the horrid plinky drum machine which probably sounded soooo à jour at the time but drives me mad now.
Agreed on Amplified Heart
A much-underrated gem- possibly because it immediately preceded them going drm'n'bass tastic. However, I fear we must disagree on Eden, which is still just plain fab. Each and Every One is something of an EBTG archetype for me and Another Bridge absolutely skewers that ambiguity over old loves. Given how young they must have been at the time, it seems remarkable in hindsight (though arguably they went on to do it better with Old Friends).
I confess to being less enamoured with Love Not Money. Sean is one of the few EBTG songs I wouldn't mind not hearing again. However it has its redeeming moments - Trouble and Strife never fails to move, for example.
Well, I know what my Saturday morning listening is going to be now...
Fellow traveller!
Eden is OK, but I just find it a bit, oh, I dunno, precious. Those bossa novas do my head in. and Tracey sounds slightly flat half the time. yes, it's lovely, but the cutting emotion of the later albums ain't there, for me, it's more of a faux jazz exercise than an album I can love like the later ones. I once spent a summer recovering from a ghastly relationship break up accompanied by "Baby the stars shine bright" - excellent company! "Takes two to make a home, but only one to tear it down" etc. I agree, EBTG day today.
Incidentally there's a really good long interview podcast with Ben Watt which is worth a lis if you're a fan. I posted the link a month or so ago.
My boss's nova tolerance is quite high
Which might explain my take on it. The US version of Eden has the best songs plus what sound like demos.
"Baby the stars shine bright " is wonderful though isn't it? "I've been behaving myself for too long" indeed - what a wonderful, lush peak it is. If it was by anyone trendier we'd never be done hearing it name-dropped.
Off to seek the Ben Watt podcast...

You have to sign up to the site but I've no spam etc since I did so it's worth it.
trio
amplified heart, Walking wounded and Eden are my favourite 3 EBTG. The only reason I'm not buyin the bargain box set is that I already have them (and Tracey's 3, and Ben's North Marine Drive. Oh and the Marine girls CD). I think they arrived in Hull the month I left.
Any chance they would turn up on a Wordcast, (either/both), or are they not interested?
I'm sure they would
Based on his podcast Ben's a great interviewee. You beat me. I haven't got North Marine Drive. A friend of mine has a pre-deal Marine Girls cassette demo with hand written sleeve which he promised me then couldn't find!
I love them all but my faves are
Amplified Heart
Idlewild
Baby the Stars Shine Bright
Ooh.
EBTG set duly purchased. I don't have any of those. ta for heads up.
The One That's Not Listed
I got the Little Feat package (on D Hepworth Esq's recommendation IIRC) from Amazon for a laughable pittance earlier this year.
Little Feat*, Sailin' Shoes*, Dixie Chicken*, Feats Don't Fail Me Now* and The Last Record Album+.
Once you have this lot, you only need Time Loves A Hero+, Waiting For Columbus (Rhino double CD version)*, The long version of Electrif Lycanthrope* (a justifiably renowned bootleg) and then possibly Down On The Farm^ and Thanks I'll Eat It Here^ (a few gems on each). You will then have all you'll ever need.
Those marked (*) are the essential ones. The others rate from "Mostly Good" (+) to "Good In Parts" (^).
Presentation of this set (and presumably the others) is crap, though. Badly-reproduced mini cardboard sleeves in a badly-reproduced skinny cardboard box. No extras of any kind. No sleeve notes.
Sailin' Shoes was originally a gatefold sleeve, wasn't it? It's not a gatefold in this set.
For low-cost acquisition of the music only.
Yes
cheap and cheerful, and I guess the minimal approach to packaging is the key here, a bit like a box full of those CDs they give away free with Sunday papers. Nevertheless a good way to fill some gaps in your collection.
Cheaper than downloads
The way I see it is that they're cheaper than downloads and you get to rip it however you want. I don't really want loads of packaging (it only ends up in the loft) and a lot of these are handy for me to get a digital version of something that I already own on vinyl.
Some of these are replacing tapes of albums I borrowed from friends in the 70s and never got round to buying proper versions of.... and the packaging is far better than my bootleg tapes!
I'm rather addicted to buying these
The price makes it easy to take a chance on artists that you want to know more about, and to replace your vinyl of favourite artists without feeling that it's a waste of money.
My best buys have been Laura Nyro, Dr John, Dave Brubeck and Bootsy Collins. In that order.
Ray Charles...
Some of the greatest music ever recorded, on five classic LPs. Not bad for a tenner.
I'm with you on that one...
....with the Otis set in second place. Lovely stuff.
Great value!
The Emmylou Harris and Warren Zevon sets are incredible if you haven't got anything by them....have to admit they are two of my favourites anyway!
Todd
that is all
What about this one:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Original-Album-Sisters-Mercy/dp/B0030HG3K6/ref=c...
already
own everything on it, in some cases several times
donny
hathaway
Otis
and Aretha, you don't need anything else
Obviously...
my vote goes for Mr. Zevon's 5 - a great selection and a true bargain.
The Monkees One
Classic. Oddly expensive.
£15
for 5 albums
with bonus tracks ?
Expensive ?
What ?
HA!
You are absolutely right. Scanning the list I thought it seemed relatively more expensive than the other boxes. They are the Rhino remastered discs, now out of circulation, with bonus tracks, it is a bargain.
I remember teenage me finding a poor vinyl copy of Pisces... In a flea Market in the late 80s when these albums weren't on CD and being happy enough to hand over £7, I think. I had to have it and hear it and I had no other way of doing so at that time. We have all gotten too used to the cheap stuff.
5 albums for the price of 1 ?
The Byrds - the first 5 albums - and they are expanded editions !
Dr John
Arethe Franklin - this one http://www.amazon.co.uk/Original-Album-Aretha-Franklin/dp/B003097AAG/ref... , not the other one
Warren Zevon
Jefferson Airplane
Harry Nilsson
The Monkees
Santana (the 5 album box, not the 3 album box)
Rory Gallagher
Mott the hoople
Johnny Winter
Muddy Waters
Jefferson Starship
Butterfield Blues Band
Fleetwood Mac (that's only 3 albums though)
I don't care if it's the marker that means the death of the CD - give me 100+ tracks for £12-£15 ! I love the 5 box series - it's only a bummer when you already have 3 or 4 of the albums and want the remaining ones.
Johnny Winter
The Johnny Winter selection is a cracker. i've got them all already but they're a great set if you like fiery blues rock guitar playing. Frankly "And Live" is worth a tenner of anyone's money.
starship ?
is your first name Grace ?
No
and it ain't Sue neither
Those are early(ish) Jefferson Starship albums before it got down to MOR pap provided by Grace and a bunch of who knows called just "starship"
John Coltrane
It's not on those lists (I think) but there's a Coltrane set which is well worth checking out - includes Giant Steps, My Favorite Things...
Dear Mike H
What is the long version of Electrif Lycanthrope? I wasn't aware that it existed.
Electrif Lycanthrope
There's a version with more tracks than the original vinyl/broadcast.
Thanks
I've just bought the Rickie Lee Jones set for £5.99!
Rickie Lee...
I bought that, and posted about it a while back, just to get Girl at her Volcano which I used to own as a 10" Vinyl and has never previously been on CD. I wanted to see if her version of Under the Boardwalk is as good as I remembered. It absolutely is. I haven't got round to listening to the other 4 yet!
I have the Aretha box too. Good value
Girl At Her Volcano was on CD once before.
But only on Warner's Japan, and only available in the UK as an import. It comes with a nice little booklet with all the lyrics, and a folded sheet inserted with the same in Japanese. One spine has the artist name and title in English, the other in Japanese. It took me a long time to track down a copy!
Already been enticed by
Jesus & Mary Chain
Pogues
Echo & The Bunnymen
Sisters Of Mercy
and
Wilson Pickett
From the similarly titled 'Original Album Classics' (from Sony):
Lou Reed
and
Vangelis
In the same vein (5 albums for around £15) also got this:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Marc-Bolan-T-Rex-Set/dp/B004477A1C/ref=wl_it_dp_...
5 T.Rex Albums (Tanx, Zinc Alloy, Bolans Zip Gun, Futuristic Dragon & Dandy In The Underworld)
Not forgetting the Edsel Classics range
http://www.amazon.co.uk/EDSEL-classics/lm/R191550SM5JWCQ/ref=cm_lmt_srch...
Personally, I think companies like Rhino and Sony have predicted the imminent demise of the CD/physical format, and are now trying to squeeze as much cash out of the product as possible.
5 Albums for that sort of price - Yes Please
Agree with demise comment....
...which also explains, I think, the outrageous money being asked for some of the box sets now - yes, Pink Floyd, Bruce, Who, Smiths, Beach Boys - I'm looking at you....
I also agree with the demise comment...
...but I also think 'say it ain't so, Joe"...!
Think the demise
comment may be true, hope it isn't.
Try to balance it with the thought "how do you sell 40 year old albums to people?"
Answer - target muso's, the type who'd rather die than buy a compilation, with a 5 album set for a bargain price.
If the cap fits....I've bought umm, quite a few of these to have the original albums as released, rather than a career spanning mish-mash (that would have been even cheaper, of course).
1 (one) JAM-C Rhino box
going for a tenner ONO here.
I only wanted Psycho C and Barbed Wire K, and BWK isn't in the set.
I'm a dick.
