Remix anyone?

Handsome.P.Wonderful's picture

I like a good remix. And in particular, I like a remix of tracks by some of the more popular artistes of the day. Recent favourites include the Thin White Duke remix of Coldplay's 'Talk', DJ Shadow's remix of Keane's 'We Might As Well Be Strangers' and Hot Chip's remixes of Kraftwerk.

Does anyone out there have similar tastes and, if so, do you have any recommendations for further listening?

Bloc Party - Burial Remix

This is my favourite remix ever. It's so very, very good.

Interesting

I'm a big fan of Burial and, having listened to the Bloc Party track, have just downloaded it (I also like the Burial remix of Thom Yorke's 'And It Rained All Night'). My only comment is that Burial's remixes sound very similar.

Now that is right up my street

Thanks for the direction.

Oh yes...

...I have the same tastes!

The Thin White Duke (aka Stuart Price, aka Les Rhythmes Digitales) has done a whole rake of remixes, all of them along the same lines but all awesome... I can recommend :

Gwen Stefani's - What You Waiting For
The Killers - Mr Brightside
Felix Da Housecat- Silver Screen Shower Scene

all remixed by him and all awesome.

For me, the real age of the remix was the mid to late 80's - New Order, Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys etc all released fantastic remixes which were either 'disco' or 'dance' remixes, basically extended with a few extra synths. I have a great collection of these!

Remixes 81:04 Depeche Mode

This 3 CD set is a treasure trove of such mixes along with new ones by Air (Home), Rexx the Dog (Photographic), LFO (Lie to Me), Goldfrapp (Halo) & Mike Shinoda (Enjoy the Silence). Goldfrapp's is more of a cover version than a remix but let's not stand on ceremony, largely because it is so darn great.

Also some rich and satisfying remixes by Flood, Daniel Miller, Adrian Sherwood, Timo Maas, William Orbit and Jon Marsh as well as some earlier remixes simply credited to "Depeche Mode", which probably meant that former member Alan Wilder was at the controls.

As you say, Agent Graves (if that is your real name), in the 1980s the extended mixes were often the single - but a bit longer. In that mould, the Just Can't Get Enough 12" features both JCGE and the B-side Shout, extended but very, very creatively and reflects what was being being danced to in 1981 in the clubs.

Never Let Me Down Again (Aggro mix)is another belter. One to avoid though in my view, is Underworld's "Hard Mix" of Barrel of a Gun which is 9 minutes of 200 bpm bashing which the vocals coming in all echo-ey every now and then. I think they were taking the piss.

80s remixes

Funnily enough, it's not my real name....I'm Rich...hi!

Agreed on the Just Can't Get Enough mix, that is a belter. I got the original DM singles box sets which have all those classics on there. Wish I could track down the 'X' sets which were also doing the rounds at the time but are like hens' teeth now!

depeche mode remixes

they were one if the early pioneers of adding extended weight to single tracks, and have always sniffed out the hippest up and coming artists/remixers to reinterpret their work (AIR, kervorkian, eno, flood, stephen hague, etc) - they have a volume 2 out next week with some interesting new updates by the new hipstersin town, and interestingly two remixes by ex-members vince clarke and alan wilder, bringing a nice full circle to the DM history!

Oh yes, I am on to that

After an inital ho-hum, I have grown to love the recent Stargate mix of Personal Jesus. I can't wait to get the 3 CD set coming soon. The 2004 set kept me thoroughly entertained for several months.

I agree...

that Stuart Price does a mean remix. I particularly like his Thin White Duke mix of Röyksopp's 'What Else Is There'.

Love remixes too

There was a great remix of elvis costellos You're not the only flame in town on a 12 inch. Pretty sure it is on one his deluxe reissues but not sure which one.

Also Alabama 3 remixes are good too.

Good thread

the whole idea is make something Totally different to the original whilst staying true to the original. Not easy.
Soulwax are brilliant at this.

A personal fave

I'm a bit of a greenhorn

in this area, as it is hard enough to keep up with new original versions, let alone re-mixes, and a lot of the re-mix market seems tainted by endless variations of a theme about electro-techno stuff in the first instance. (Note my up to the minute lingo, pop-pickers). However, I feel that this is an area that could warrant some further homework, given some of the offered items above. Of course a few have crept into my pod over the years, mainly on such as Faithless and Transglobal Underground CDs I have liked. And I bought my first Alabama 3 CD by mistake, picking up their Speed at the Sound of Loneliness single, expecting, um, just that, discovering instead 5 breakneck techno versions, 3 of which I loved. Not exactly like their un-remixed stuff, later investigayed with relish. I also have the Chumbawamba remixes of the OysterBand, which, despite my love of each individually, are largely a crock of shite. Nice green vinyl, mind. Via Mrs Path I also have grown to like the remix of Rock the Casbah, where the Clash are 4-4ed into a slightly middle eastern submission. What I really like is when a track is totally morphed, such as the Ashley Beedle remix of Heaven 17s Let Me Go.
More pointers, please, but less thump thump, more think, think.

This is an infamous remix for people of a certain age.

Less a remix and more of a rewrite really.
A remix taken to the absolute extreme.
Taking the vibe of a track and running with it rather than simply adding a dance beat to the original.

R.E.M.i.x.

A few years ago R.E.M. put up a remix album of Reveal on their official website as a free download.

The Jamie Candiloro remix of "I'll Take The Rain" is blinding.
