Reevaluatin' Blues

So Johnny Cash did it, then Neil Diamond and we all seem to be pretty supportive of Glen Campbell's recent efforts. Which country/middle of the road crooner will be next?

Does Willy Nelson need some of that reevaluating magic or is he muddling along fine with his jazz duet albums?

I'm holding out for Kenny Rogers or Kris Kristofferson and also, I know he's a bit dead, but couldn't Rick Rubin work some magic with some of John Denver's studio acetates?

My money's on Merle

Springsteen recovered from "Born in the U.S.A." but Merle Haggard had no such luck after "Okie from Muskogee".

I'm A Lonesome Fugitive is still my favourite country record (and one no James Burton fan should be without), and he's surely due for a reappraisal before he gets too old and lives up to his name.

All I know of Merle Haggard

is a track called 'If I could Only Fly' which was on a free Uncut cd and it is heartbreakingly good in my etc. Where should I look for more of the same?

badartdog | 16 September 2008 - 2:38pm

If I remember correctly....

....."If I Could Only Fly" was written by Blaze Foley. He was shot and killed in a senseless argument. "Drunken Angel" is Lucinda Williams tribute to him.

Must Have Merle

You have GOT to get your hands on Down Every Road by Merle. It's an absolutely fantastic box set, every tracks a winner. He may well be THE country singer and he doesn't need anyone's help when it comes to making great records. Check this out;

No excuse! Go and Buy IT!

If I could only fly

Wasn't this his attempt at a Johnny Cash American Recordings style album ?
It was very good I seem to remember. Lost my copy in a House move.

The Tony Christie album with Richard Hawley

“Made In Sheffield”, covers of songs by the Human League, Jarvis, Monkeys etc.
I think Christie’s a bit of a ham though.
Is Don Maclean still alive?

Willie doesn't need anybody's help

the imminent re-issue of 'Stardust' is all you need to remind of his genius.

Joe Muggs | 16 September 2008 - 3:05pm

Agreed

I was going to post something along those lines.
You could also argue Kristofferson has already done it with 1999's The Austin Sessions album.

Carl Parker | 16 September 2008 - 4:28pm

Willie

You're damn skippy Willie doesn't need anyone's help

Pat Carty | 16 September 2008 - 5:07pm

Kris

And who's going help Kris improve on this?

Pat Carty | 16 September 2008 - 5:09pm

Donovan

And oh boy, does he need a career re-evaluation! However trust Donovan to be the one to have already squandered the chance offered by the Rick Rubin route to new glories!

Prior to working the magic for Johnny Cash, Rick Rubin produced a back-to-basics acoustic album with Donovan. 'Sutras' should have been a chance to re-capture the greatness Donovan had during the Mickie Most years - some great songs, and some great supporting players, but woefully underpromoted by Don it sank without trace. His first and last for Def American - Rubin took the same idea to others with far greater success.

Is it too late for someone to give Donovan another chance?

Van Morrison

I'd like to see Van the Man submit to a good producer (hardly likely I know) and do a covers album . I would kick off with covers of Mike Scott's "This Is The Sea' and Donovan's "Sunny Goodge Street" any other suggestions????

Elvis and Rod

I remember reading the story somewhere about Elvis Costello being interested in producing a Rod Stewart record. Can you imagine how good that could be?

Pat Carty | 16 September 2008 - 5:56pm

What about the women?

Any chance of Barbra Streisand getting a Diamondesque makeover? Or perhaps Linda Ronstadt?

It worked for Loretta Lynn, working with Jack White.

Never needed for Dolly or Emmylou.

Paul Waring | 16 September 2008 - 6:10pm

Wrecking Ball

Wrecking Ball was a major makeover for Emmylou.
While on the one hand I can now say it was unnecessary (though a wholly successful exercise) on the other I have to admit that it was the first Emmylou album I ever bought leading me to major investment in her back catalogue and everything else released ever since.

The Rolling Stones...

acoustic guitars, a small drum kit and a piano. An old 8 track console. One week to record 12 songs.

Patrick Crowther | 16 September 2008 - 9:27pm

OK...

missed the bit about country star or crooner.

Patrick Crowther | 16 September 2008 - 9:30pm

Keith

Keith solo record, all covers, country, blues, soul and reggae.

Pat Carty | 16 September 2008 - 9:41pm

You're right though

It's the sort of thought I've entertained for many years. Instead of trying to produce music for teenagers, come up with something that befits their years and that part of the music rooted in the old blues masters.

Carl Parker | 16 September 2008 - 9:49pm

Joe Brown

He's done a few songs on his most recent albums where it's just him and a guitar/ukelele. A full album of just that would be great and would hopefully show him to be the national treasure that he so rightly is!

Paul Wad | 17 September 2008 - 12:01pm

Joe

his last two albums have been just that and it is time Word (wake up Hepworth and Ellen!!!)devoted some time to this British guitar genius. Last album contains a beautiful version of King Richard's "Dimming Of The Day" plus a superior version of "Killing The Blues"

Bang Em In Bingham | 17 September 2008 - 4:08pm

The Rolling Stones...

...OK, not crooners, but I'd like them to do one last flab-free album. All of their albums since 'Voodoo Lounge' have been overlong and padded out as a consequence of that. They need a fresh producer- maybe something like Nigel Godrich did with Paul McCartney on the 'Chaos And Creation...' album, telling them when the songs simply aren't strong enough.

I'd like to hear Tom Jones have a go at a stripped down blues/soul album. He's had more than a few comeback albums over the years already, though.

Willie Nelson / Ryan Adams

Willie Nelson has already done it, he made an album with Ryan Adams And The Cardinals.
