Record player help?
Posted by GD Nicholson Esq. on 10 September 2010 - 1:00pm.
Hullo, respected massive.
I'm looking for some advice. I have a 12-inch black disc with a hole in it. is this a record?
Oh, the hilarity.
Right, down to B Ts, as the Candyman might say. I'm looking for a record player. Nothing fancy or dancey, just something to play the boxload of vinyl i've managed to accumulate down the years (no more than that: I'm a child of the 80s).
I'd quite like it to look nice and classic without being huge. It should ideally go on top of my chest of drawers.
Any joy?

Gotta budget?
My first thought too
You can buy a perfectly servicable Rega for around £300 or splash out around £2,000 on a Linn. I'm sure there are both more expensive and cheaper models around.
Richer Sounds
Not the worst place to start.

I've got the Numark one
Perfectly fine for the non-hi-fi freak with a stack of vinyl.
Comes with good Audacity instructions too, which are invaluable.
£300 is probably at the top
£300 is probably at the top end of my budget. I don't play them that much and, if I'm honest, I think it would look cool too, but I do want it to be functional.
I realise this admission makes me out to be a bit of a dick and it's good that that;s how it comes across because for a distressingly large portion of the day that's exactly what I am.

Rega
The Rega P2 and P3-24 are both reasonable bits of kit. They do the job pretty well.
The P2 has Rega's RB251 tonearm...
...while the P3-24 has the RB301 tonearm:
Rega's Elys 2 is quite a nice little cartridge. Eminently suitable:
I suppose a good alternative to Rega would be the Austrian manufacturer Pro-Ject, so check them out too.
have to agree on the Rega front
have had mine for 15 years and still going strong , it's simple to use sounds good and depending on your taste looks good(mines black, but they did do colour plinths when I was looking).
It's great if you want to just to play lp's as you do have to take the platter off to change speeds but this isn't much of a faff.
Things to consider you may need a phono amp to boost the output from most turntables. Either a stand alone amp or you may have a built in one already as some amps have phono module.
personally wouldn't go mad on turntable and save your money on buying more vinyl.
Seconded
The Rega P3 turntable, and the Rega Planet CD-deck have given me years of sterling service. Bung 'em through a decent pre-amp/amp setup and some nice speakers (Spendors for example) and Robert is related. Happy spinning.
Had a Planar 2
in mid 80s, I am sure that a new or used P2 or P3 would be a really great buy. Have fun
Want any woofers with it, chief?......no clues
The best sounding record player I ever had was one of these

Nothing has ever sounded better :-)
Ooooooh
I have a big box of 7 inch vinyl that's just GAGGING for one of these. Me wanna! Me wanna! Birthday next month! Treat! Treat!
A Dansette!!!
Stimpy beat me to it. I've got one just like the one above (but in blue and cream). It's warm , valvey and sounds like a tank. In a good way. If you don't want the faff of taking the thing to bits when you fancy switching from LP to 7" like one of them modern looking spage age ones above, the old Dansette's yer man. Looks retro cool too.
Sorry
Sorry, I cant help.
(But after looking at these photographs, I may have to go & interfere with myself)
Excuse me..
That's my USP. I have priority phonoonanistic rights in these parts.
