Record Club

Mint's picture

I was wondering whether anyone knows of, or have been involved in a Record Club. By this I mean a kind of Book club, but instead of a group of people meeting up every week or two and discussing the merits of a certain book, they would discuss a certain record.

Or would this be just going down the pub with a few mates?

Yes

I've often thought about it, but would be scared of a room full of blokes wanting to out do each other.
How to moderate it without being over bossy?
Mind you, I also thought about running a jigsaw club until my wife told me it would be a boring no-no.

Another forum i'm

a member of has a listening club where members pick an album, all play it at the same time and then discuss the album. It makes for some great conversation.

Would you

consider doing jigsaws as well?

The danger is that if you spread the whole thing too wide

you start cutting corners and leave people at the edges; some won't fit in and you would be left to pick up the pieces.

Genius - Ha!

I'm avoiding cutting corners by using Jig-maps.

Yes

that was the kind of thing I was thinking of, whats the forum, if you don't mind me asking?

I know there are loads of book clubs around, indeed a friend is a member of one, and she loves it. Interestingly it is pretty much all female.

The thought of a load of blokes meeting in a pub talking about a Springsteen record is, actually, probably too horrible to contemplaint

I used to run a book club at a previous workplace...

... and I was the only male member - no-one's ever offered a satisfactory explanation of why there should be this gender-bias in discussing books, but it's definitely there.

It was great, makes you realise how unusual it is to find more than 2 people in the same place who have read the same book(s), and we had some great conversations.

Records are a bit different because it's so easy to listen to an album (especially in a Spotify world), to the point where I could nominate a record now (9.00 AM on a Tuesday morning) and we could have our meeting this lunchtime. Listening to an artists' whole discography and discussing that, though? Now you're talking...

Yep, I host one

There's six of us. We meet the first Monday of the month round at mine. First task of the night is to order a takeaway. Then we take it in turns to play a theme record (theme agreed the previous month, e.g. "Films", "America", "Food").

By the time we've all finished playing our tracks, the food's normally arrived. So we have a nosh, then crack on with the second half, where we all play a free choice record.

I'd recommend it to anyone. We always have a good laugh, and you get to hear lots of new stuff (not always stuff I like, but that's absolutely fine, always good to broaden the horizons).

Then we agree next month's theme and have a coffee before everyone heads home. It's always a winner.
