Rastamouse

Lunaman's picture

My grandchidren were over yesterday and they showed me a new tv show on CBeebies - 'Rastamouse'. Didn't have this when I was a kid!

It's also available on Iplayer.

Racist, apparently,

according to some rather over-sensitive parents who have complained to the BBC.

I remember when

Teletubbies was going to bring about the death of civilisation as we knew it (© Daily Mail).

Ridiculous.

Whereas a show called 'Rockmouse' with white mice on guitar and bass, and a token black mouse on the drums, all with cockney accents would be acceptable, I expect.

My kids are too big for CBeebies now, but I will be Sky+ing this and sneakily watching it while they are in bed. :)

There was a kids' cartoon

a while ago that featured (?) or was at least soundtracked by no more indie schmindie riotgrrrrl types "BIS" and didn't Clint Boon write the theme tune to another series?

The Wonder Stuff

or Miles Hunt and whoever he was destroying their legacy with that week did the theme to Underground Ernie

The theme for Saturday morning show...

... 8.15 From Manchester was the Inspirals doing a rejigged version of Find Out Why. Is this the programme you are thinking of?

50 seconds in the music starts...

Check out 'Bookaboo' on CITV.

It's about a dog who's a drummer in a rock band who won't go on stage until he's had a story.

Find more videos like this on Bookaboo Grown-Ups

Complete morons.

I'm somebody who beleives political correctness is a very good thing as racism, sexism agism etc are all very bad things. i even go as far as agreeing entirely with stewart lee's views on political correctness.

however, the idiots that think rastamouse is racist are the same idiots that give political correctness a bad name. they're the same simpletons who think the word blackboard is a racist term (have they ever asked any black people if they find that offensive?).

Rastamouse is written by a jamaican rastafarian, and most of the voice actors are of west indian descent.

it's a brilliant, charming and harmless program that shouldn't offend anyone.

I thought this must be the case...

Rastamouse is written by a Jamaican Rastafarian, and most of the voice actors are of West Indian descent.

Which suggests that people are not prepared to do their research or contextualise something before flinging the term 'racist' around. I suspect that people who complain about such - as you say - harmless shows are actually closet xenophobes, who are terrified of expressions of a culture different from their own. Rastafarianism on CBeebies! Whatever next? Toddlers smoking gigantic spliffs and wearing dreads? Outrageous.

These are probably the same parents

who complained when Cerrie Burnell, your typical blonde young thing of Kids TV who just happens to have an arm which ends before the elbow, was on their screens and 'scaring' their kids.

Sod em.

DogFacedBoy | 13 February 2011 - 5:33pm

Took my kids 6 months

to notice she was missing part of her arm. Maybe they need to start reading the Daily Mail more to see what should offend them.

Rastamouse seems a hit so far with them but I can't see it unseating the mighty Octonauts.

My favourite rodent entertainers

Kids TV + Spike = joy

0
DogFacedBoy | 13 February 2011 - 6:11pm

We loooove Octonauts

It's my daughters' very favourite programme (along with Rastamouse and Come Outside).

Worryingly, I think I have an actual crush on Captain Barnacles.

It's Rasta Week on CBeebies.

To mark the occasion they're showing a special edition of Postman Patois.

drakeygirl | 13 February 2011 - 10:16am

Did you know

what they called Postman Pat when he was made redundant?

Lando Cakes | 13 February 2011 - 6:40pm

I still think it's going to confuse kids.

No-one talks like that anymore. Innit?

Lenny Law | 13 February 2011 - 2:22pm

Didn' t have this when I was a kid!

Tv? Been around for a while now in fairness.

pompeygeorge | 13 February 2011 - 2:32pm

Give it up

for the Eezy Crew as I believe they say in Mouseland under the watchful eye of President Wensley Dale. It's good wholesome fun with cheesy Reggae music. I like it, it does no harm.
