"Let's Randomize again - like we did last year at about this time if memory serves...."

David Hepworth's picture

ipodmelt.jpgLet's be having you. Put your iPod (other MP3 players are available) on shuffle or random and read out the first five tunes that appear. If you cheat we will all know and your crops will wither and die, even unto the fifth generation.
I'm first:
Fela Kuti: Go Show
Frankie Laine with Mannie Klein's All-Stars: That's My Desire
The Stooges: I Wanna Be Your Dog
Michael Jackson: Thriller
Joni Mitchell: Dreamland

None more mainstream

1. Maybe I'm Amazed - Paul McCartney, McCartney

Lucas Hare | 17 March 2008 - 2:58pm

The Coral

Sorry for late reply Chimney Singing Crow - Bill's absence didn't affect things too much as they mainly played acousticaly with Ian Broudie guesting on lead guitar on a few songs. They played for almost 2 hours with loads of covers ('Bye Bye Love', 'Midnight Cowboy') and some very good new songs ('Green Is The Colour').

Bubbling under at number 6 was Best of CBeebies, the other podcast I subscribe to because yes the children do object to Mark Ellen's laugh in the car. Telling them there's been a national debate and questions asked in the New South Wales parliament about this seem oddly to get me nowhere...

The joy of shuffle....

Big red sun blues/Lucinda Williams. From the 3rd (4th?)yet eponymously titled and, IMHO, best Lucinda LP. Exemplary playing and production by the excellently named Gurf Morlix.
See me/Luther Vandross. Cripes! The Mrs Path influence kicks in. Not bad by half. Isn't that what they call "fatback" bass?
You made a fool of me/Tasmin Archer. Post shooting Satellites she should have been enormous, even getting Mitchell Froom to produce her. It sank like a stone. Pity, 'cos its a good LP, even if the whitest sounding woman of colour in the world(see strand of some weeks back)
Ride on/O Susanna. Not the song made famous by Christy Moore and others, but a slab of 10 minute american gothic (think decaying southern mansions and consumptive riverboat queens, rather than black lippy)Fabulous to drive thru' Castle Vale to.
About the ocean/Glen Campbell. From the Reunion LP with Jimmy Webb. Beautiful vocal. You can see why he was a short term Beach Boy sidesman Standout track from a somewhat patchy LP.

0
Six Dog | 18 March 2008 - 10:40am

This is an old chestnut....

....and one that will entertain and/or stultify ever onward. No, i-tunes is not, per se, mathematically random, but there is nothing un-random in even 5 songs by the same artist popping up in consecutive order. The randomness of random can include any, um, random selection.

Shellshock (12" version) - New Order
Grace Kelly - Mika (how did that get on there!)
Some Girls are Bigger Than Others - The Smiths
Live-In Skin - Foo Fighters
Reaching Out - Kate Bush (from The Sensual World)

Seems to have skipped my entire collection of alt-country, world music, dead trendy indie kid records, so-hip-it-hurts-dance music and knowingly ironic pop music. And the entire works of Led Zeppelin. (Morrissey was up next in case you're wondering).

Not one set of five could have come from my iPod

Out of nearly 100 offerings, you'd have thought there'd be one! Is that true for everyone I wonder?

0
kb | 18 March 2008 - 7:35pm

Yep!

It's certainly true for me. I think 3 out of 5 is the closest I come.

0
Red Umpire | 18 March 2008 - 7:53pm

There should be a name for that...

... having all 5 songs from someone else's randomizer on your ipod. A 'podwhack' perhaps.

0
Nick | 19 March 2008 - 12:18am

Degrees of podwhack-ness

I can't find a list of five where I've even heard all the tracks, let alone own them, or a list where I own music by all five artists listed. Perhaps it should be:

level 1 podwhack - heard all the tracks
level 2 podwhack - own music by all the artists
level 3 podwhack - own all tracks

"Outer Space" - Jimi Tenor : curiouser and curiouser, my missus is Finnish and this is the only Finnish artist I have in my library of 5000 tracks (and the only song of his to boot). .... not counting the keyboard player from Classix Nouveaux, who'd done a runner back in the early 80s from his wintery homeland to avoid national service.

There ain't no party like an SClub Party

Woohoo I am vindicated!

In the deep, dark corners of my ipod, lies 'I Said Never Again (But Here We Are)' by The Stevens.

I heard it on the radio a few months ago on a long car journey whilst listening to some tinpot local FM somewhere outside of Wrexham.

The ditty came on and it sounded like Adam and the Ants, only sung by a woman. I expressed how I liked the tune to the Missus and was brutally mocked when the DJ stated who it was at the end. The insulting carried on until we got home. That was a long journey. I stand by my opinion!

0
StormyintheNorth | 23 March 2008 - 12:25pm

0

Sorry...

0
CrawtonLeek | 21 March 2008 - 3:59pm

And another

LCD Soundsystem's Yr City's A Sucker appeared on Grimmer's list (20 March, 8.47pm) and mine. But the low number of overlaps suggests a wide range of musical tastes!

3. Christmas at the Trailer Park - Antsy McClain
4. I held my baby last night - Fleetwood Mac

The ipod is 'only' 30 gb. Not sure this is more representative. I don't think I've listened to the Goldie track more than once.

But track 6 is the Rutles - Another Day, the only use of the word 'pusillanimous' in recorded music! wonderful!

Statesboro blues - Taj Mahal (the upside of compilation albums)

Hmmm... the first and last are the only ones I'd actively seek out to play, but I'm happy the others are on my iPod... why is that?

Father - 45 (ex 8,683 songs)

1) Great Gig In The Sky - Pink Floyd

3) Ruined In A Day (Remix) - New Order
4) Streets of Your Town - The Go-Betweens

Further argument ensues re disappointment over absence of Jeff Buckley, Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix (Son) and Father - Joy Division, Motown, Jonny Cash and anything Classical, and even more discussion (shouting) over the futility of such an argument.

Good game though - makes ones want to invstigate stuff one hasn't heard.

Only a 4G Nano

There's no room for much old stuff (I add at least one new CD a week so something has to give) so this very much "ipod random" rather than "itunes random" When They make an iPod that I can get my whole collection on I'll get one.

Highway - Ingrid Michaelson
Slip Away - Lloyd Cole
Levitate Me - The Pixies
Waving Flags - British Sea Power
I Come and Stand At Every Door - Sid Griffin

That's quite good! I don't usually use shuffle because I like to listen to my albums all the way through as nature intended but you may be onto something here!

Sorry double posted

Only ones who know by Arctic Monkeys on now.

HOW good is that song for such a young bunch?

In a foreign place, the saving grace was the feeling,
That it was a heart that he was stealing,
Oh he was ready to impress and the fierce excitement,
The eyes are bright he couldnt wait to get away,
I bet that Juliet was just the icing on the cake,
Make no mistake no
