"Let's Randomize again - like we did last year at about this time if memory serves...."
Posted by David Hepworth on 17 March 2008 - 12:17pm.
Let's be having you. Put your iPod (other MP3 players are available) on shuffle or random and read out the first five tunes that appear. If you cheat we will all know and your crops will wither and die, even unto the fifth generation.
I'm first:
Fela Kuti: Go Show
Frankie Laine with Mannie Klein's All-Stars: That's My Desire
The Stooges: I Wanna Be Your Dog
Michael Jackson: Thriller
Joni Mitchell: Dreamland

Bubbling under at number 6 was Best of CBeebies, the other podcast I subscribe to because yes the children do object to Mark Ellen's laugh in the car. Telling them there's been a national debate and questions asked in the New South Wales parliament about this seem oddly to get me nowhere...

5. Stand in the World - Marjorie Fair (from a Word of Mouth CD no less)

I was looking for something a little upbeat. It started well enough, but then...

The joy of shuffle....
Big red sun blues/Lucinda Williams. From the 3rd (4th?)yet eponymously titled and, IMHO, best Lucinda LP. Exemplary playing and production by the excellently named Gurf Morlix.
See me/Luther Vandross. Cripes! The Mrs Path influence kicks in. Not bad by half. Isn't that what they call "fatback" bass?
You made a fool of me/Tasmin Archer. Post shooting Satellites she should have been enormous, even getting Mitchell Froom to produce her. It sank like a stone. Pity, 'cos its a good LP, even if the whitest sounding woman of colour in the world(see strand of some weeks back)
Ride on/O Susanna. Not the song made famous by Christy Moore and others, but a slab of 10 minute american gothic (think decaying southern mansions and consumptive riverboat queens, rather than black lippy)Fabulous to drive thru' Castle Vale to.
About the ocean/Glen Campbell. From the Reunion LP with Jimmy Webb. Beautiful vocal. You can see why he was a short term Beach Boy sidesman Standout track from a somewhat patchy LP.

see.....two Roses songs from a random choice of 7,433 songs. Please, so comments on algorithims or the true menaing of "random" - it just isn't!
This is an old chestnut....
....and one that will entertain and/or stultify ever onward. No, i-tunes is not, per se, mathematically random, but there is nothing un-random in even 5 songs by the same artist popping up in consecutive order. The randomness of random can include any, um, random selection.
Your killing my spirit.
My heads in a whirl after that last sentence.

Last Harbour - Mark Eitzel
Not one set of five could have come from my iPod
Out of nearly 100 offerings, you'd have thought there'd be one! Is that true for everyone I wonder?
Yep!
It's certainly true for me. I think 3 out of 5 is the closest I come.
There should be a name for that...
... having all 5 songs from someone else's randomizer on your ipod. A 'podwhack' perhaps.
Degrees of podwhack-ness
I can't find a list of five where I've even heard all the tracks, let alone own them, or a list where I own music by all five artists listed. Perhaps it should be:
level 1 podwhack - heard all the tracks
level 2 podwhack - own music by all the artists
level 3 podwhack - own all tracks
When I have a spare 2 hours.....
....I will get back to you.
Sad git replies to himself....
hello, Glenbervie (18/3/08): I have 5/5 of yours. At level 3
A couple of 4/5s and a few 3/5s.
And what does that prove?
Diddly! I'm not going to do the other levels.
(P.S. only took 5 mins to scan thru!)
Another sad git....
I can manage 2 at level 3, the ones from martin Edden (18 March, 5.43am) and Sven (19 March 7.37am).
My 5

You have me bang to rights,
You have me bang to rights, it's a fair cop guv. The first four were genuinely random I just wanted to get something appropriate for the final track.
Now look here son
The whole point of the Randomizer is you're not trying to create an impression. Next time, you're going in my book.

"On Repeat" : LCD Soundsystem
Dialogue "Lose Yourself" - John Barry : from the Ipcress File OST.
"Bloodrush" - ACT : pretentious and superior 80s pop from Paul Morley's ex-missus and Thomas Leer
"Outer Space" - Jimi Tenor : curiouser and curiouser, my missus is Finnish and this is the only Finnish artist I have in my library of 5000 tracks (and the only song of his to boot). .... not counting the keyboard player from Classix Nouveaux, who'd done a runner back in the early 80s from his wintery homeland to avoid national service.
