Rage Against (Florence and) The Machine!

busker_du's picture

She's not the future of pop music, she's just a very naughty girl.

She's so busted! Clamped! , etc.

It's probably Post-Post-Modern.

Or summat.

She's this generation's Toyah Wilcox...

...and will be doing panto by Christmas.

She's behind you!

Toyah had 10 top 50 singles and 7 top 50 albums in 5 years, I'll be impressed if the fragrant Ms Welch comes anywhere close to that, myself...

I still occasionally listen to Ms Wilcox's first three albums...

...whereas I never want to hear Lungs ever again (not that I have much choice - it appears to be the soundtrack du jour for music programmers everywhere).

Gang Gang Dance have a big PRS cheque coming their way.

Future Doctor Who assistant

I feel sure this will happen.

a whole

lot of money has been spent and then spent again, before a last ditch attempt to practically give the album away in order to finally be able to say she has a no.1 album.
For someone who last year was supposedly the pick of 09 at the brits to come back in 2010 and do a note for note cover of 'you've got the love' is embarrasing. Makes you glad the major record companies are in so much trouble, if this is what they are going to waste their money on.

Despite the fact

that You Got The Love was a b-side on one of her first ever singles?!

The only thing that stopped her getting her number one album on release was Michael Jackson's death resulting in several weeks chart dominance.

She's sold 750,000 albums. Before You've Got The Love was released she'd sold 450,000. Like her or not, she's been very very successful. You've Got The Love is smashing it on commercial radio, so it's just in the process of going very mainstream.

Sorry but most of what you said is just factually wrong!

struggling

to find anything I said that is 'factually' wrong. Also, what is the relevance in stating that 'you've got the love' was a b-side? I was just stating that after releasing an album of 'original!' material it took a re-issue with a cover version and a heavu discount to get her to number 1. In my opinion she's more hype than talent.

Your point

that it took 'You got the Love' and a massive amount of record company spend and a price drop to make the album a success is factually wrong. It was already successful.

Your implication was that the record company had to resort to releasing a cover to make the album sell. Not true. That song had been around for ages and in this day and age if people only liked one song then they would just buy that on iTunes.

She maybe more hype than talent but popular consensus would seem to disagree

don't

agree what i said is factually wrong on any point - it reached number 1 in January 2010 through the points I mentioned plus the 'fact' that January is traditionally a slow selling month.
Another 'fact' is that the vast majority of people know of her only as the girl who sings another cover of 'you've got the love'. Is that really a solid foundation for her to build on for her second album as a serious female artist and was it really part of Universal's masterplan. No, I don't think so.
Anyway, happy to agree to disagree on this.

Fair points all

I think Universal will be pretty pleased with the way it's all gone.

But like you said, let's agree to disagree!

evidence?

I don't see that. The album costs about the same to buy as any other high profile album does. Her career took off with the Rabbit Heart single, through radio airplay. The album always had that cover version on as a so-called bonus track. I know a lot of people who genuinely like the album. Personally I think there are five decent songs on there - Dog Days are Over, Rabbit Heart, I'm Not Calling You a Liar, Kiss With A Fist, Drumming Song.

Obviously, there is a promotional budget at work, and maybe once that dries up people will stop caring. The reason I think she will end up as an actress is that I don't think the music industry has much in store for anyone, and she has the looks and the expressiveness to do such a thing.

Someone should have a word

with Hazel O'Connor.

Unlike Little Boots and La Roux

Florence and the Machine has sold steadily throughout the year, and has barely left the charts since its release. I for one, think it's a brilliant album. So there. 'Rabbit Heart' was probably my favourite song of the year, and I don't like it any less for knowing it's plagiarised another song.

Nathan Barley Alert!

Here's an article about Florrie. Which must have been written by Charlie Brooker whilst in a playful mood.

Anyone saying I found it whilst doing an image search for Florence and clicking on the one of her in stockings is a dirty rotten liar and I shall demand the satisfaction. It was something else entirely. Probably.

I bought It

for my daughter recently and we have had it on in the car quite a bit. Dog Days is a great song, Kiss With A Fist is pretty good (reminds me of The Broken Family Band, now sadly demised, but who i was quite a fan of)the rest seems pretty average to my ears but I'd rather my kids were listening to this than JLS.

BTW, reagrding the Hazel O'Conner mention above, why do they never ever show breaking glass on TV? Was one of my favorite films as a kid

Breaking Glass...

... is one of those films mired in the legal stuff. It was officially released on DVD in the UK in 2001 but withdrawn/deleted almost immediately. I was in the trade at one time and tried to get the rights, but was warned that it wasn't worth even trying, and the same issues (whatever they are - I suspect a dodgy synch rights clause in a contract) have prevented TV showings too, though in my head I seem to remember it being shown in the past 5 years or so as part of an 80's season or something similar...
