Radiohead albums...

Formbyman's picture

I listened to every Radiohead album yesterday (in chronological order - how sad) and have put them in order (favourite first) below. Have I got it right?

1. In Rainbows
2. Kid A
3. OK Computer
4. Amnesiac
5. The Bends
6. Hail To The Thief
7. The King of Limbs
8. Pablo Honey

Here's mine:

1. The Bends
2. Er...
3...that's it.

Agree completely

I think the Bends is most splendid but have never understood the high regard in which OK Computer is held.

Yeah.

I really dislike Thom's voice but the songwriting on The Bends is so strong it's unarguably great.

Not dissimilar

1. OK Computer
2. In Rainbows
3. Kid A
4. Amnesiac
5. The Bends
6. King of Limbs
7. Hail to the Thief
8. Pablo Honey

If the King of Limbs was based solely on Side Two then it would probably edge out Kid A

No, I'd say...

1 Bends
2 OK
3 Hail
4 Rainbows
5 Kid
6 Amnesiac
7 Limbs
8 Pablo

Try listening to them again in your order or preference and see if they really do get worse as you go along. Then you'll really know if you've got them right or not. I have a sneaky suspicion you may feel suddenly refreshed when you reach your numbers 5 and 6. Just a theory.

Good idea...

... that's next Sunday sorted.

Pablo Honey

I've listened to Pablo Honey about a hundred times more than anything released after OK Computer. It's certainly not bottom of my list - it would be 3rd after The Bends in 1st and OK Computer in 2nd. The rest sort of merge in a worthy but dirgey mass.

You make a very good point

I try to think of everything after OK Computer as "works" rather than "albums". I helps me cope with the frustrating nature of their output and the amorphous entity that is Radiohead. But then if they weren't Radiohead, they'd probably be Coldplay. And Aphex Twin might be Steps, if you get my drift.

Good point also

I would say that the first 3 Radiohead albums are all solid favourites for me. The fact that they haven't turned into pale imitations of themselves is a good thing and probably extends the life of those 3 albums for my listening pleasure.

The Bends

1. The Bends
2. OK Computer
3. Kid A

Resident "expert" wades in with...

1. In Rainbows
2. Kid A
3. Hail To The Thief
4. OK Computer
5. The Bends
6. Amnesiac
7. King Of Limbs
8. Pablo Honey

I'm certain of the top two & last place but the rest swap & change, according to mood.
It's been Kid A for years until the majestic In Rainbows swept everything else away (listened to it in its entirety yesterday while making lasagne).

Formbyman

Even if you joined the BNP and wandered round your local town centre shouting Enoch Powell's Rivers of Blood speech at passers-by, you wouldn't be as "right" as you are with your ranking in the OP.

In summary, I agree.

Jolly decent...

... of you to say!

0
Formbyman | 23 January 2012 - 8:15pm

OK, computed!

In Rainbows
OK Computer
The Bends
Hail To The Thief
Amnesiac
King Of Limbs
Kid A
Pablo Honey

I'm not that mad about Kid A really - something about the sound I find kind of sterile and unpleasant. Other than that one and Pablo Honey I'm keen on all the rest, though Hail To The Thief and Amnesiac could lose a few tracks. King Of Limbs I like all of but it doesn't have many spine-tingling 'moments' compared to their best work. The top three are clearly the strongest.

1. OK Computer 2. Kid A 3.

1. OK Computer
2. Kid A
3. In Rainbows
4. The Bends
5. Amnesiac
6. Hail To The Thief
7. King of Limbs
8. Pablo Honey

Top 4 can change order quite easily, as can the bottom 4. A bit like the Scottish Premier League after it gets split in half.

Oooh Ooooh

See, I know they're only EPs but at 8 tracks long I'd probably include the "My Iron Lung EP" and "I Might Be Wrong: Live Recordings" as well. After all, TKOL had 8 tracks and was of a similar length and that was an album.

So:

1. In Rainbows / Extra Disc
2. OK Computer
3. Kid A
4. Hail To The Thief
5. Amnesiac
6. My Iron Lung
7. The King Of Limbs
8. I Might Be Wrong
9. The Bends
10. Pablo Honey

Now, that may seem somewhat controversial, but I honestly don't think I've listened to The Bends or Pablo Honey for years. Probably something to do with over-exposure as a teenager, or more probably because I just find the others more consistently interesting. Either way, MIL and IMBW are definitely worthy of inclusion in my book.

0
badger_king | 25 January 2012 - 6:06pm

Yes.

IMBW should be included. I considered it but didn't go with my gut feeling.
I'd place it after Amnesiac.

andielou | 25 January 2012 - 6:36pm

Mine....

1. Hail to the Thief ( to my ears the most "complete" Radiohead album)
2. Kid A
3. The Bends
4. In Rainbows
5. OK Computer
6. Pablo Honey
7. Amnesiac
8. King of Limbs (phoned it in)

If we could add solo stuff, I'd probably slot in The Eraser at number 6.

I used to love Radiohed.

And I still love the idea of Radiohead.
But if any of their music post OK Computer pops up on 'shuffle' these days, it gets forwarded faster than Thom saying 'no' to attending an awards night.
