Radio 6, imitation, flattery etc.

Red Umpire's picture

I see Radio 6 have had a good idea on their website:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/mb6music/F8477006?thread=5227628

To be fair, this originated as a posting in their message board and the original poster did say "With apologies to Word Magazine"; but they've lifted it and put a link to it from their home page making it look like something they've come up with...

This post on the thread made me laugh: "I'm technically backward, but I asked my 6 yr old to pull an LP from the vinyl rack, and I got Nashville Skyline." It's by someone called 'Fist of Onan' - doesn't he post here from time-to-time?

Fist of Onan...

...does indeed post here from time to time when he takes a break from his sterling work on various other message boards trying to get the odious George Lamb off 6 Music.

And don't be too harsh on 6 Music for borrowing the shuffle game - especially as it was started on Gideon Coe's show, one of the few remaining beacons of light on a once great station - it provides those of us fighting the good fight amidst the general idiocy some light relief.

Trivia moment:

Who was Onan, and what did he hold in his fist?
(Clue: seed is spilt on the ground.)

The art of onanism

Steve - I wasn't aware of the Gideon Coe link, so I shall rein in my scorn. Thanks for pointing that out.

Retropath - Genesis 38,8-10: "And Judah said unto Onan, Go in unto thy brother's wife, and marry her, and raise up seed to thy brother. And Onan knew that the seed should not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in unto his brother's wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest that he should give seed to his brother. And the thing which he did displeased the LORD: wherefore he slew him also."

So I'm guessing that things got a bit messy when he went to look after his brother's wife's budgie and that God got a bit cross about it all. Would that be right?

(Is this passage really a reference to masturbation? It reads more like coitus interruptus to me...)

What album's that from?

'Wind and Wuthering'?

Sorry - horribly forced prog rock joke. I'll get my coat...

you are correct

one of those "everything you know is wrong" moments

Actually

Playing the role of Suzy Dent in Dictionary Corner (and, yes, I'm slightly ashamed that I remembered her name without the help of Wikipedia), I looked onanism up in my trusty Concise OED and it is defined thus: "n. masturbation; coitus interruptus". So it means either. That King James' Bible translation must be a bit dodgy. Always preferred the Good News version myself...

Anyway, at least you can now begin the process of rebuilding your shattered life Riccardo, safe in the knowledge that you were (partly) right!

INDEED!

Here I am - a year late.

I have no idea what all this "spilled seed" nonsense is about.

Onan is the most Westerly of the Western Isles, and I am the 44th Earl thereof.

It's been a long time since we declared war on the mainland, but by God your comments push is to the brink of hostilities. Just be grateful that the island's only functioning boat is away, puffin-rustling on Lewis.

Otherwise all 38 of us would be over like a shot, to avenge the slight to Onan's honour.

I do enjoy those signs

at the side of the road and adjacent to cropfields, promoting Farmers Own Seed. Makes me chuckle, anyway.
Where've yoy been, Fist? Had your hand full?

I've been off hunting....

...George Lamb, across the internets, like a dog.

I still don't have an ipod. Looks like witchery to me.

Hands off Stuart Maconie

On 6 Radio, or Radio 6, he is indeed Switzerland.

I couldn't agree more

...but what's the connection?
