Radio 2 Day
Imagine my surprise to switch on Radio 2 just after 7:00 this morning and hear "Roots" by Show of Hands. And then instead of the usual inanity of Chris Evans to hear Simon Mayo and Jamie Cullum go on to play and talk about records by Emmylou Harris and Bellowhead. They also played a couple of jazz tracks which I really liked but can't remember the names of - although one was a stonking a capella version of "Feeling Good". The show finished with a live performance of "Come Together" by Cullum. This was a last minute suggestion from Chris Evans (who turned up anyway)as Jamie had apparently planned to play "Dear Prudence". ANy prejudices I may have had about Jamie Cullum were confounded. It was a great version. It's here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p00hqf75
All this is apparently part of Radio 2 Day where they're changing the daytime schedule to reflect the whole breadth of what is broadcast over a week.
I doubt I'll listen to much more during the day. But that hour between 7 and 8 shows how good morning radio could be.

The organist entertains
... does he get a look in?
Oh yes
The mighty Wurlitzer fires up this evening
The Mighty Ogmeister
Turned up on the bit with David Jacobs and Michael Ball.
A bit later was Steve Wright. The Onanist Entertains.
Haha.
Have an up. Mind you, looks like nature's getting it's revenge on Steve Wright.
I'm 37 and I BLOODY LOVE
I'm 37 and I BLOODY LOVE 'The Organist Entertains'. And I have since I was a teenager. Why? I don't know.
I think it's like a lot of
specialist programming, and even a bit like Peel was for some people. Even if you stopped listening it was good to know it was still there. I used to like listening to Humph, but it's good that Jamie Cullum is doing a similar thing in his way to keep that thread going.
I also quite like listening to Trevor Nelson on a Wednesday sometimes, though I've got out of the habit now Jo Whiley's on in the evenings and I switched to a great show on BBC local in my area (Tees) introduced by a bloke called Bob Fischer.
I must say...
... I am glad Radio 2 Day is a one-off.
Two Good
It made a refreshing change to hear Simon and Jamie on the radio this morning. Alongside Bob Harris, and a bit of Evans, these are the only two presenters who I really listen to on Radio 2 anymore and download their podcasts. Nice to hear some early morning jazz, nothing better than a bit of jazz to start the day with. Let’s hope 6music do a Joy Of Six Day soon.
Not sure
I hope that they don't do it with 6Music, given that the whole output is available on the iplayer so that you can listen in any order anytime it seems that it's treating the listeners as idiots that can't do things themselves. I'm willing to do a deal though... stop all the trailers that tell me 50 times an hour what I already know is going to be on at the weekend (because I was listening the first time!) and then I'll allow them to put the whole programme under my nose when I'm not really expecting it.
I read the listings when I got home.
I've never been so pleased about spending a day at work and missing something.
Vine and O'Leary?
Jesus on a bicycle..! These must have been the two names written down most frequently in the secret ballot of 'Well... OK... as long as I'm not on air with...'
Whiley and Feltz?
Whiley and Feltz?
You have no idea
just how fucking quickly that got switched off as I woke this morning.
Winkleman
Claudia Winklemann was meant to be on with Jo Wiley but I think she's very pregnant so couldn't make it. Shame, I really like CW. From listening to Wiley & Feltz promote their slot towards the end of Mayo's bit it sounded like they'd only just met for the first time in the corridor outside the studio. Toe curling.
Desmond Carrington
Broadcasts from his lovely home in the wilds of Scotland. He revealed today he was 85 years-old. He owns a perfect radio voice, knows his stuff and gets on with broadcasting good music without the waffle.
I'll bet HE knows who Jimmy Webb is too.
Yep
Remember when he used to do Sunday lunchtime. That and the comedy like Listen to Les or The Grumbleweeds actually made Radio 2 worth a listen.
Even now I try to catch MC Desmo on his Friday evening show
