"Oh give him a big Gretsch in the video, he'll be fine..."
They may well be the tortured songwriter/producers, but who really cares? YouTube is stacked with stuff that no-one goes to visit except for the pure lyrical performances of such stella lead singing artistes as The Divinyls, Transvision Vamp, Roxettte, Eurythmics or The Buffalo Springfield. Alright, apart from Noel Gallagher, Pete Townsend, Alison Moyet, that bloke out of The Pet Shop Boy, Sonny, Ike Turner and Mark Ellen out of Ugly Rumours, who are the real powers behind the throne? You get a bonus point taken away for mentioning Mark Ronson.

Powers behind big acts...
(WARNING - this response features heavy rock acts, stop reading now if dis-interested in the genre).
Guns N Roses (the classic line-up) - Duff McKagan (bass player) - the guy who prevented the whole outfit from imploding far sooner than it did.
Metallica - despite the constant whiny-ness and media profile dominance of their diminutive drummer, James Hetfield is Metallica. He is one of the geniuses of Heavy Metal - terrific guitarist, singer, frontman, songwriter. You can take away any of the other members of the band and Metallica would remain so long as Hetfield is fronting it.
Aerosmith - Brad Whitford, Tom Hamilton, Joey Kramer (rhythm, bass, drums). The solid backbone to the Toxic Twins. Also wrote some of the most memorable 'Smith moments - Sweet Emotion, Last Child, Janie's Got a Gun
Black Sabbath (classic early 70s line-up) - Geezer Butler (bass). Although Iommi is the Godfather of the metal riff, Butler was the architect of the band. His were the lyrics, the album concepts, and the almost jazz-tinged bass lines which stood the Sabs apart from their contemporaries
Led Zeppelin - John Bonham - ferocious drummer for his time. Have you seen the 1970 Royal Albert Hall concert footage?!! Despite the genius of Page, and the technical wizadry of JPJones, when Zeppelin lost their power-house they were totally right to call it a day.
