Phew! That was tough!

Thanks for trying your luck. The answers are below.

New Musik The Three Johns

The Modettes Black Oak Arkansas

Pete Brown's Battered Ornaments The Boothill Foot Tappers

The Doobie Brothers Fanny

The Korgis Shakatak

How did you do?

Oh dear

One and a half. Got as far as Pete Brown in 5 but couldn't decide on Battered Ornaments or the other band I can't remember the spelling/pronunciation. Also got 6. Thought I recognised Kenny Rogers in 7, but went for Chicago since there were a lot of them.

Edit: I'm up to two and a half! I had 8 as Fanny. (See Erratum below)

3!!

I knew I recognised Pete Brown, I just couldn't place him. Thought the Passions (who they?) were 4 Non Blondes- surely the gurning one is Linda Perry?
My 3 were the Doobies, the Korgis and the lovely to see Boothill Foot Tappers.

Retropath2 | 17 December 2008 - 10:50am

5 !

I got the Modettes, Boothill Foot Tappers, Doobie Brothers, The Korgis and Shakatak.

I hesitated with the Doobie Brothers because they were not Smash Hits also-rans, like the others I identified.

I thought the Three Johns were Jesus & Mary Chain and I have never heard of 4 & 5. In fact I thought 5 was Smokey.

Austin | 17 December 2008 - 11:06am

I got none

and to my further shame, I've only actually heard of two of them.

Am I still allowed to subscribe?

0
Joe R | 17 December 2008 - 12:06pm

Exactly the same statistics

Perhaps we should form a support group?

0
Sam Fiddian | 17 December 2008 - 10:56pm

Big Fat Zero

Perhaps the Word should loan us out to lower league magazines, where we can improve our game in relative obscurity.

smithylad | 18 December 2008 - 10:49am

Hmmmmm

But isn't the clue in the earlier postee who suggested an intimate knowledge of Heppo et als earlier oeuvre, "Smash Hits", was an integral part of the ability to do well in this quiz? I am sure some of us old groaners could put up an equally difficult selection, based upon those in our own personal hoards. I had always felt too old for "Smash Hits" at the time, despite being a wee bit younger than its editorial leads, so the "charts" were a no go zone.

Perhaps this is the North American subthread

Yeah, 0 and heard of 2

3

Three Johns, Shakatak and Doobie Brothers. Was reaching for Black Oak Arkansas but couldn't quite grab the name.

0
Matthew Horton | 17 December 2008 - 1:44pm

Wot?

It's not Piblokto!?

0
Vulpes Vulpes | 17 December 2008 - 2:18pm

One.

The Korgis.

( Oh dear Mrs Doobie...what did you unleash onto an unsuspecting world?? )

0
eddie g | 17 December 2008 - 2:24pm

A massive "2"...

The Doobies (of course) and the Korgis (I remember grinning when they were on TOTP miming to "Everbody's gotta learn sometime" and the lead singer had his tie threaded through the strings of his guitar!).

And I thought that "The Passions" (also who they) were 4 Non Blonds too. Kicking myself over Black Oak Arkansas - for whom I plumped on "America".

I must say tho that I had heard of (and promptly forgotten about) 80% of the bands - and their obligatory one hit.

Trevor_Raggatt | 17 December 2008 - 3:22pm

One

The Doobie Brothers. Never heard of New Muzik, The Three Johns, The Modettes, The Boothill Foot Tappers, Pete Brown's Battered Ornamants (well, only on the podcast) and The Passions.

Ignorance is bliss.

0
Patrick Crowther | 17 December 2008 - 4:42pm

Two

Three Johns and The Boothills.

0
barneytabasco | 17 December 2008 - 4:59pm

2!

The Boothills and The Doobies.

Claiming an extra point because I own three New Musik singles, and have at least two of them on the 'pod. Recognised the photo of the Korgis but couldn't place it.

Never heard of Pete's Battered Ornaments, but I DID enter a competition on Danny Baker's R5 show to name Black Oak Arkansas' band members as a percentage...

0
Stephen Hanley | 17 December 2008 - 6:59pm

same as you

but then though the doobie one was so easy (relative to the others) that I didnt write it in, so technically only 1.

Was the tappers song "get your feet out of my boots"?

0
Dave Holley | 18 December 2008 - 7:22pm

Yes it was!

Thanks for the buzz of memory you've given

0
Retropath2 | 18 December 2008 - 7:45pm

Somewhere an anorak twitches

"Get Your Feet Out of my Shoes" - I think it was and yes, a great song.

0
Austin | 18 December 2008 - 10:26pm

Erratum

Apologies to the 12 people who correctly identified picture eight as being the godmothers of chick-rock, Fanny, but were told otherwise. We had the picture mis-labelled as one-hit-wonders The Passions. This has now been rectified.

If it's any consolation, I scored a big fat zero on the quiz. Not enough eighties American hardcore for my liking.

0
Fraser Lewry | 17 December 2008 - 7:17pm

Never heard of Fanny

But I remember The Passions on Top of the Pops doing "German Film Star" and can only remember a female lead singer and the rest of the band being fellas.

0
Austin | 17 December 2008 - 9:58pm

Suzi Quatro's...

...sister was in Fanny. Not sure which one she is in the photo though.

0
Indus | 18 December 2008 - 7:56pm

Er...none...

Are you sure number 4 isn't Hawkwind?? For my sins, I've only heard of three of them.

0
nicktf | 17 December 2008 - 7:48pm

Four

Three Johns, Modettes, Boothill Foot Tappers and the Korgis.

The Modettes were rather foxy as I seem to recall. Strange things happened to my formative psyche when Ramona's foxy French vocals start on 'White Mouse Disco' et al.

Three Johns - didn't I recently mention them on a podcast? Only two of them actually called John, I seemed to remember.

Boothill Foot Tappers - The amusingly named 'Slim' (front centre, and indeed, left of photo) was and I think still is employed by the BBC in a building management capacity in the central London area.

0
Producer Matt | 17 December 2008 - 9:57pm

Slim Clive Pain

if IIRC, winner of an NME Ian Dury Who's the Biggest Blockhead competition back in the day
(no idea how or why I remember this)

I scored a respectable 5, spotting Fanny but not Shakatak I'm most relieved to say

0
James Blast | 18 December 2008 - 7:20pm

One

The Three Johns

0
spt | 17 December 2008 - 11:32pm

F All

And I once met New Music as well...sorry lads.

0
Paul Bernays | 18 December 2008 - 12:04am

Oh Heavens.

One! The Doobies.

I even had those Three John characters as 'The Stray Cats'.

New Musik eh? Sanctureeeeee....

0
SirTerence | 18 December 2008 - 12:09am

Oh dear..

Three - The Doobie Brothers, Fanny and Shakatak. Both The Modettes and The Boothill Foot Tappers are new to me.

0
JQW | 18 December 2008 - 1:46am

The Boothills

They were great, forerunners, along with the yet to be foreshortened Pogue Mahone of a new and rootsy revival in music. They were more banjo and country(ish) based, as compared to Shanes mob. See also "The Men they couldn't Hang". The genre had a name, something-billy as I don't quite recall. The banjo player went on to form the excellent and even less than under-rated "The Barely Works", early champions on Cooking Vinyl. I caught their last ever gig, at the lofty heights of Solihull Library. Their van broke down on the way, but any fan of trombone/tuba/banjo and fiddle should check 'em out.

0
Retropath2 | 18 December 2008 - 9:41am

Six!

...and I even got the silly spelling of New Musik. My other triumphs were the Mo-Dettes (thanks to a major teen crush on Jane), the Doobies, Fanny (a guess to be honest), the Korgis and Shakatak. With a gun to my head I might have *eventually* got the Boothills and the Three Johns, but I would have gone to the grave (and may still) not knowing Black Oak Arkansas and Pete Brown's Battered Ornaments...

0
Metal Mickey | 18 December 2008 - 12:14pm

Big Fat Zero

Although I recognised Shakatak but confused them with another band from that era. I actually saw The Three Johns live once but they obviously didn't make much impression. Should have got the Doobies but was thrown by the fact that Kenny Rogers appeared to be in the middle of the picture...

Got Fanny. My how we laughed at that name in the 70s.We had to make our own amusement in those days. I can't say I feel too ashamed at not geting the rest. Had some good generic stabs and was convinced that the answer to five was Taste as I thought I recognised Rory Gallagher second from the left.

0
Chris Young | 18 December 2008 - 4:19pm

I've not seen any...

... 70s German porn but I'm pretty sure the guy second from the right in picture 5 must have been in some.

One by the way; only the Doobies.

0
Baron Counterpane | 18 December 2008 - 5:04pm

One!...

... The Doobie Brothers and only because of Michael McDonald's white hair & beard.

0
Nicodemus | 18 December 2008 - 6:05pm

One

The mighty Boothill Foot Tappers, who I saw once and they [no cliche] rocked the joint. One of the best live bands I have ever seen for sheer energy, fun and getting the place dancing . Slim [and possibly others] from the band was also in the wonderfully named Forest Hillbillies, doing much the same sort of thing just as well.

The Foot Tappers made a fantastic single on Go! Discs and then fell into the hands of a major label who, in time honoured style, smoothed off all the wild and fun bits and produced a rather bland album. If anyone knows where I can get a download of the single version of "Get Your Feet Out Of My Shoes" I'd love to hear...

Bloody hell can't believe i got that many.
Did'nt get
New Musik (did anyone ?)
Pete brown ....
fanny
the three Johns

the Modettes- I had ther single. Hello I love You.. The doors song sung over the riff to "You Really Got Me"
Black Oak..Someone posted a clip here the other week and i guessed it from that.
Boothill.. Had the "People Get Ready" 12 inch single
Doobies.Yacht rock tipped me off
Korgis. I rememberd the bloke on the left
Shakatak.. I remembered the singer on the far right. God they were awful

0

Three Johns - one was also a Mekon and an excellent illustrator (Jon Langford)
Modettes - I loved the French lead singer Ramona. Debut single White Mice was ace ('Don't be stupid don't be limp - no girl likes to love a wimp')
Boothill Foot-tappers - supported them in Manchester, a good time skiffle revival act
The Korgis - a lucky guess. Pretty awful I thought.
Shakatak - furry dice, ford cortina, funk wannit?

0
badartdog | 18 December 2008 - 10:00pm

wasn't one of

The Korgis a former Stackridger?

0
James Blast | 18 December 2008 - 11:24pm

Both, I think

James Warren and Andy Davis.

After Mrs Doobie's boys, they doubled my score to two.

0
Stan Halen | 19 December 2008 - 4:11am

Three guessed / Three wrong

I misidentified Black Oak Arkansas as Hawkwind, thought The Korgis were Steely Dan and wrongly tagged Shakatak as Debarge.

I understand that my licence to listen to records is to be revoked this coming Monday.

New Musik & The Boothills were very low blows indeed. I got The 3 Johns (I went to school with Jon Langford, y'know. May have mentioned it before. Decent cove. Draws a bit), The Doobies, Fanny & The Korgis. The Rocking Vicar did something along these lines last year but parish business caused him to forget to give the answers to the last lot. Could someone remind him next time he pops into Word Towers for a fortifying Amontillado?

0
Graham Johns | 19 December 2008 - 6:12pm

2

The Korgis and The Doobie Brothers.

I thought the Modettes were the Belle Sytars and the Three Johns Its Immaterial....doh!

0
Uncle Wheaty | 19 December 2008 - 8:08pm

Fanny

Whatever you do, don't buy their scratch'n'sniff album.

0
Bhoyo | 20 December 2008 - 1:39am

oh.....

I dunno...

0
James Blast | 20 December 2008 - 2:06am

Zero

but no surprise since the only ones I ever owned anything by were the Doobies - talking about China Grove yeah yeah talking about China Grove.

0
Steve Turner | 21 December 2008 - 1:33pm

Four (with a bit of research)

Got the Doobies, Fanny and Korgis no problem. The girl band picture lit a dim spark in my dusty old brain that whispered, "Woody from Madness's girlfriend's group". Which is one way of not quite remembering the name of the Modettes.
