Entertainment For Lively Minds
Pulp

When:
31st August 2011
Where:
Brixton Academy
Comments:
Playing for the devoted in a packed Brixton Academy the band feel able to throw in a few fan favourites and less well known songs rather than their perfect 'all the hits' sets that they have been wowing festival crowds with this summer. So 'Lipgloss', 'Countdown' and 'Razzmatazz' pop up alongside 'Wickerman' from their criminally underrated final LP 'We Love Life'. Much emptying of bladders and topping up with beer during that last one but you can't please em all. Richard Hawley sprinkled several songs during the set with his ace guitar playing and the sound which can be variable in Brixton was superb. Jarvis is the perfect host, giving out wine and beer to the front row and accepting gifts thrown onstage. I could have done without the 10 minute plus teasing intro - just play a couple more tunes in that time (particularly from 'This Is Hardcore' (of which only got a stunning rendition of the title track tonight) but otherwise a brilliant night out. Gig of the year - so far.
The Audience:
Very enthusiastic and bouncy without being needlessly rude or aggressive as they sung back every word. Which is what you'd expect from a Pulp audience. And perfectly formed (ie short) near me so I could see easily.
Food & Drink:
Made a bottle of water last all night as didn't want to lose my prime space in the crowd. I'm a cheap date.
It Made Me Think...:
These reunions often have the smell of "cash grab" about them but this feels more like a valedictory lap of honour to remind people how great a live band Pulp were \ are and how we've missed these songs

even though
he's a tit?
....and that....
....their two biggest hits were (a) a rip off of some Italian novelty song, and (b), and far more alarmingly,....erm.....a direct copy, that's 'a direct copy', of a Laura Branigan song!
(I'm embarrassed I know that last bit.)
I never knew that -
- can you post some links or give more info? I love a good "inspired by" bit of knowledge for Sunday night pub discussion sessions
You know when you say 'a direct copy, that's 'a direct copy''
you're implying the whole of Disco 2000 is nicked rather than the the intro (of Gloria) which is used in the Pulp intro and verse. The chorus is completely different as, of course is the lyric. Parts of the song are undeniably nicked - as the admitted at the time. Jarvis said the line 'Your name was Deborah, it never suited ya' was to have been 'Your name is Gloria' but he thought that was going too far.
and
sour puss, grumpy pants...
I'm not the hugest Pulp fan but I've always found that originality, authenticity, and the not-a-tit-edness of the lead singer were irrelevant in whether I like a band.
Which is doubtless why I've always liked the Sisters of Mercy too...
They had their 15 minutes
in 1996.
Have to say that a sizable crowd of people saying 'take your year in Provance and stuff it up your arse' is about as political as it got back then.w
However,
Everyone knows that Shatner recorded the best version of Common People.
