That's brilliant.

But is there really a new series on its way?

What was his point?

That he'd been told to wear a tie and the film crew hadn't?

0
Captain Underpants | 15 June 2011 - 9:02am

No.

Hygeine rules say no long ties or long sleeved shirts, they're proven routes of infection. (Notice the consultant was wearing a bow tie for this reason.)

The camera crew hadn't followed the rules of his ward; and were presenting an infection risk, and he was justly furious.

The ties that bind

From what little I know of hospitals, ties and shirts are the indicator of one's status, and Cleggaron was complying perfectly:
Senior surgeons: bow tie. [See also: antiques experts.]
Doctors: wacky tie with characters on it, to imply eccentricity.
Politicians: no tie, sleeves rolled up, to imply readiness to get hands dirty with some real work.

Nick White | 15 June 2011 - 9:11am

Nope.

Hygeine rules, see above.

The consultant was also probably furious that his workplace was being taken over for a vapid publicity stunt. I've been sounding out my friends in the NHS about this much-vaunted "consultation". They all regard it with cynical contempt, as they see the reforms being implemented exactly as originally planned.

keefus | 15 June 2011 - 9:17am

Apologies

Sorry Keefus, I was just being frivilous - I'm in full sympathy with the consultant and with every NHS worker, especially at the moment.
I always cringe when any politician rolls their sleeves up.

1
Nick White | 15 June 2011 - 9:27am

Notice Clegg's body language

Stands by and looks concerned, while putting his hands on his hips to say "I'm important too".

Wanker.

keefus | 15 June 2011 - 9:14am

The sad thing about Cleggaron is that

'it' renders Armando Iannucci irrelevent. Not even he could make this shizzle up.

1
waldorf | 15 June 2011 - 9:33am

Excellent - thanks for posting

I wonder what went on in the short section that ITN had cut?

The female friend of the patient who looks like she has come from a summer graduation ball, adds to the moment also.

I just find it

interesting that Cameron responds and acts while Clegg just...er...cleggs*.

*Clegg - vb: to gain a position of power solely to act as a punchbag and a figure of ridicule.

So is there a new series of The Thick Of It or what?

Though this video is basically an window into Malcolm Tucker's head.

Absolutely Brilliant.

Nope.
Hygeine rules, see above.

They all regard it with cynical contempt, as they see the reforms being implemented exactly as originally planned.

Yes. I find it slightly disappointing that Cameron has the cheek to say "I agree". If he'd said "get that nutcase out of here" would the the Consultant have been escorted from the premises by some tie wearing security personnel? Clegg just looks like a man who's confused bless him, and who's heart is clearly in a different place to the awful role he's been handed.

These are both men that said categorically that the Health Service ring-fenced from any cuts, prior to the Election. Anyone remember that. At all? Indeed, do any of the press or media remember this? Amazing what its possible to get away with in a "Democracy" isn't it.

The consultant clearly has a point

but he could have been more impressive by being polite and not acting like a petulant, self important knob.

3
Leedsboy | 15 June 2011 - 3:59pm

I don't think he was looking to be impressive

I think he was just bloody annoyed. It looks to me like he didn't know or care whether the cameraman was filming. I also suspect that if he was too polite he would have been brushed aside and ignored.

0
Mike_H | 15 June 2011 - 4:14pm

Yes he inevitably comes across as petulant in that edit. But …

Who released this? ITN?

Exact quote, he says "why have we been all told to walk around like this, when … ". Then there's a very odd cut and edit. A woman, probably part of the crew says "why don't you talk to me". This infuriates him further, and he says "no… I'm not happy about it."

Chances are they were all herded around like the kids on Top Of The Pops. Not may people would have the courage to do this. And unlikely that it would have happened, were he not provoked. Good luck to him, he may need it.

Will be interesting to see if he's given the opportunity by the press to say what actually happened from his point of view won't it? And whether anything else goes on …

1
Marky | 15 June 2011 - 5:00pm

The edit

could, of course, work the other way and make the consultant look better than he may have looked if all of the footage was shown.

Leedsboy | 15 June 2011 - 9:21pm

Pardon me but

why the fuck should he have to worry about how he comes across on TV?

As far as I know, the surgeon is not seeking, nor in, public office. He's a highly qualified and skilled person, doing a bloody serious job, who has had his workplace taken over by a pair of simpering dickheads for their own political purposes.

And now his behaviour has to be picked over by gawping internet experts...?

5
keefus | 15 June 2011 - 9:41pm

As a simpering gawping internet expert

I don't care how he comes across on TV. I care about how he comes across in real life. Which I thought was ruder and less professional than it could have been.

He works for the NHS. He is not the king of the world. I may even pay into the fund that pays his wages. I would like him to behave more professionally.

None of that defends the simpering dickheads by the way.

Leedsboy | 15 June 2011 - 9:48pm

Consultant being an arrogant

Consultant being an arrogant tosser - shock. I have yet to meet one who I would spend time with voluntarily. Unfortunately they tend to also to be highly intellegent, much in demand and very well renumerated. This further feeds their god complex even though they are paid by us. I really can't stand Clegg/Cameron though; a double act of two straight men.

woodface | 15 June 2011 - 10:25pm

Anyone need appendix removed?

I'm available and quite pleasant, don't know a thing about surgery but I'm pretty cool on 70s English Progressive Rock and 80s Goth.

anything to help

0
James Blast | 15 June 2011 - 10:38pm

Do you have

a bow tie?

0
Leedsboy | 15 June 2011 - 10:41pm

Shit!

you got me there.

I don't have any ties, do I? no, I don't

0
James Blast | 15 June 2011 - 10:43pm

Meanwhile, across the pond...

Activist Ray McGovern is violently ejected for silently protesting Hilary Clinton's policies, while she gives a speech about abuses of freedom in Iran etc.

2
Mike_H | 15 June 2011 - 4:31pm

So a pair of NHS wreckers...

... encountered a rude person who works for the NHS, who had a go at their camera crew and not them?

I think they got off lightly.

1
ganglesprocket | 15 June 2011 - 10:33pm

ITN Clip

Everyone seems to be applying spin to this clip to make it suit their political ends. As far as I can see it's just a senior consultant taking umbrage with a camera crew that have walked onto his ward with taking the necessary precautions to ensure hygeine.

Nothing to do with Cameron & Clegg really.

0
Spartacus Mills | 15 June 2011 - 10:46pm

I did say...

... "Had a go at their camera crew and not them"

"NHS wreckers" and "got off lightly" is definately my own politics seeping through though. You got me bang to rights there guv and no mistake.
