Prog Loopy Nuts Are We

look who I saw at Roger Waters last night

I know Rocket Ronnie looks as if he is about to kill me in this pic, but he grinned and gave thumbs-up immediately after. He was having a whale of a time, singing every word, and he even stood up and SALUTED the wonderful line "hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way".

Steve Davis was a massive progger too - did he not fund tours by Gong and Magma, or something? Is there something intrinsically progressive about snooker?

Well the games do go on a bit.

The tactical play that often drags-out a closely contested frame could be the equivalent of a fiddly harpsichord solo. I would like to see more snooker players wearing capes.

Yes. Capes.

Absolutely they should wear capes. I think some of the "prog spawn" bands I wrote about should get involved. Perhaps Acid Mothers Temple And The Melting Paradisio UFO could record a cover version of Half Man Half Biscuit's 'Everybody's Doing The Len Ganley Stance'.

And the commentators...

could pay homage to Jon Anderson's 'difficult' wordmithery....

The greatest pop video ever made?

Hey, it was just a question.

Archie Valparaiso | 19 May 2008 - 2:27pm

Yesterday

I was at a village fete and the guest of honour was Dave. As in Chas 'n'. I got there late and missed him, unfortunately.

Lucas Hare | 19 May 2008 - 6:18pm

And golf

I once sat next to Nick Faldo at a Pink Floyd show at Earls Court. He's very tall.

Fraser Lewry | 19 May 2008 - 2:37pm

Lots of empty seats......

.....or were they sitting incognito in the cheapest of cheap seats?

Retropath2 | 19 May 2008 - 2:42pm

Is there something intrinsically progressive about snooker

Yes. Both are a load of balls.

Crowdedmouse | 19 May 2008 - 3:36pm

backwards7 | 19 May 2008 - 4:51pm

Haha...

...I love it!

JJ | 19 May 2008 - 6:43pm

That, Sir,,,

is quite possibly the best thing I've ever seen. Wonderful.

Patrick Crowther | 20 May 2008 - 4:54am

Joe Davis

must have shat himself that day. Who broke?

Brilliant.

Vulpes Vulpes | 20 May 2008 - 1:08pm

Tarkus

Tarkus The Potter?

Crowdedmouse | 19 May 2008 - 4:56pm

Tarkus was all about ...

...the power break and the rebound. Away from the green baize his legendary drinking earned him the nickname ‘Old Red Eyes'. A moniker that was later paid affectionate tribute by The Beautiful South in their song Old Red Eyes is Back, written a few weeks after Tarkus's death in an Eastbourne nursing home for animamorphic World War I tanks.

A great player. We shall not see his like again.

backwards7 | 19 May 2008 - 5:56pm

Embassy weren't sorry to see the back of him

His stubborn refusal to wear a waistcoat while chain-smoking was petty, uncalled-for and decidedly off-strategy.

Archie Valparaiso | 19 May 2008 - 6:23pm

Tarka Dhal

'otter than normal dhal

Hot Cider | 19 May 2008 - 6:06pm

Steve Davis...

...is a big fan of the Wire Magazine-approved RIO (Rock In Opposition, apparently)/Avant Garde stuff which is generally far too obtuse/twiddly even for a prog fiend such as myself- think Henry Cow and that sort of thing. He's also into the classic Canterbury Scene groups like Soft Machine, Caravan, Egg and a sub-genre known as Zeuhl mainly led by the aforementioned Magma. He did have a radio show where he indulged these passions.

He's also something of a soul buff too, from what I gather- he appeared in Record Collector once discussing his love of those 70s bands and soul music and has apparently been in a second hand record store near me buying soul.

JJ | 19 May 2008 - 6:50pm

White socks and furry dice

I remember seeing Steve Davies interviewed on Swap Shop or similar where he expressed an admiration for all things "jazz-funk". A list including (but not limited to) the following:

Central Line, Level 42, Freeez, Heatwave, The Real Thing, Atmosfear, FBI, Shakatak and Gonzalez.

Those were the days eh?

Stephen Hanley | 19 May 2008 - 10:56pm

I reckon Willie Thorne...

likes The Enid.
