PFM
are indeed superb. 'Il Banchetto' is a personal favourite.
Love Them LOVE THEM
I gave away a ticket to see Led Zep at Earls Court so I could go see PFM at Victoria Theatre instead. One of the best decisions I ever made.
It's All Greek To Me
Aphrodite's Child:
Spock's Beard from USA
My favourite track is from the CD The Kindness Of Strangers, with original singer Neal Morse, as opposed to live version on YouTube. PLAY LOUD.
Ange - Fils de lumière
Francais n'est pas?
Flower Kings from Sweden..
Fraser says they sound exactly like Yes..
I'm sure I don't know what he means...(I like 'em though)
If you want a band that sounds like Yes
I give you Starcastle from the US:
Outrageous
Being a big Yes fan, I bought a Starcastle album once; it didn't have an original idea in it and I quickly sold it. However, I have to say I quite enjoyed Lady Of The Lake.
From Australia..
Sebastian Hardie.
(Some may say that Focus albums were studied)
Shingetsu - Night Collector
The Japanese version of Genesis from the 1970's
Bloody hell, Shane!
I'd say Focus albums were distilled, concentrated and intravenously supplied! but nice one - I've never heard those guys before (and I'm more than casually acquainted with Aussie prog!)
Speaking of which...
Colin..
Sebastian Hardie changed their name to Windchase just after this.
Taman Shud came up in the surf scene of the late 60s and released what must have been Oz's first concept album called (I think) "The Goolutionites and the real People"
Happy days.
A transatlantic alliance
including members of Spock's Beard, The Flower Kings, Marillion and Dream Theater
Now
with ex-members of Spock's Beard and Dream Theater. Wonder who the guitarist is at the back?
oh yeah, that's right
cos Portnoy left didn't he? Fair enough, I think DT have run their course
Jordan Rudess
I would happily have him replace Emerson in ELP given Keith's inabilty to play now through hand problems. He does a mean Tarkus. Here he is with Steve Wilson of Porcupine Tree.
Guitarist at the back
Is Daniel Gildenlöw from prog-metallers Pain of Salvation.
Mentioned already
Lets have a big hand for Focus. Something less obvious but still delightful.
FM from Canada
live tv clip from 1976. See Nash the Slash before the bandages!
And of course, who could forget
Magma. Here is the last section of the classic Mekanik Kommandoh, from a recent gig with Christian Vander, and crew going doolally:
ELP in clogs
ELP in lederhosen
Triumvirat - Illusions on a Double Dimple
I'm Spartacus
only real Progressive Dudes will get that
Anglagard from Sweden
Astonishing tricky Crimsonesque prog from the 1990s if i recall correctly.
Proper German prog
More Germans
Witthüser & Westrupp - Schopfüng.
Look!
I'm old, confused and I have no idea where they're from or if they're Metal, Prog, Goth or that emmo stuff I've read about, but this is my top 'earworm' at the 'mo.
Ta Planet Rock!
skip to 3:20 for the tune, I just like the way it hits the ground running
That's Stormin' Rock that
from Dutch progmeisters. Here's Lana Lane from America, wife of Erik Norlander of Ayreon, and in a similar vein to chaps above.
Sagan om ringen
Bo Hansson - svensk prog
Toppen! And top 40 UK album
More Australians...
...the splendid Spectrum. Manfred Mann's EB covered their first single and its B-side (the single, 'I'll Be Gone', having been a freak huge hit for Spectrum in Australia), but otherwise they're unknown outside of Oz. My pal Trevor down under regularly hangs out with Spectrum main man Mike Rudd at a Melbourne coffee emporium. Mikre and Bill (bass, big moustache) are still Spectruming, but their organist of yore disappeared in the early 80s and hasn't been seen since. A shame - their finger-picked electric guitar and moody organ sound was quite unique and beguiling...
RWPL
from Germany. This is one of their shorter tracks.
Audiac
Their label is German, but I've no idea where they are from.
Sound good, anyway.
..and my favourite Euro prog band...
..from Finland, I give you Wigwam.
Widdly sax, crazy time sigs and truly odd vocals.
It's the very thing that would cause your dad to say "Call that a tune?"
You know you're prog
when even your YouTube window is too long...
Brilliant Shane!
...I've just ordered the Wigwam 'Being' CD from amazon - never heard of them, or heard a note of them before! Sounds incredible...
Here's the similarly dazzling Mellow Candle from Ireland:
And from Austria....
...it's 'Gandalf' (Ian McKellen not pictured) - a track from his best (by far) Lp, 'Magic Theatre':
I've lived with "Being" for a long time now Colin..
..and it never fails to reveal new things to me.
Check out "Fairyport" too.
They released an album on Virgin called "Nuclear Nightclub" and its OK, but by then they'd lost Jukka Gustavson and become a little more conventional.
Got to love Mellow Candle.
Kebnekajse auf Sweden
Hansson & Karlsson auf Sweden
It was later covered by Jimi Hendrix, who liked to jam with H & K when he visited Sweden.
Great Thread!
Others to consider are Ars Nova (Japan), Le Orme (Italy), Bo Hansson (Sweden), Trace (a spin-off from Dutch group Focus), Par Lindh Project (Sweden), Banco del Mutuo Soccorso (Italy) and Riverside (Poland).
Trace
I mentioned them and posted a clip!
