Printing Problems in iTunes

CharlieB's picture

Imagine my surprise when I went to run off a jewel case for a cd, I had downloaded into my itunes library, only to find that all I got was a BLACK cover with the printed track list.
So I re-installed the printer, used itunes repair function and the repair option in Microsoft Fix-it to resolve the matter.
No success and after going to the Apple Forum page it seems to be universal problem with the latest itunes software update.
Have any of the massive had the same or know of a solution?

Cheesed

Currently miffed with iTunes. Steve Turner and Bob are awaiting some CD's from me and I'm having bother getting the current version of iTunes to burn. 'Source file not found' keeps popping up.

'But there they fucking are!' I shout. It can't hear me.

Yep, me too

iTunes has had this problem for ages. I used to print cd jewel inserts a lot, but haven't been able to for a good six months now. Two iTunes updates, and lots of new driver installs etc and it still doesn't work. It seems to be a common problem, lots of people having a moan about it on the web. Boo Hiss! I've resorted to writing out tracklistings in a nice pen on a plain piece of paper, and cutting it to shape. Quite therapeutic, and reminds me of the days of making cassette tapes for friends. But still VERY annoying!
(if you are using a mac you could use the cross-hairs thing to do a partial screen shot by selecting the track info you want. That will then be saved to your desktop as a photo, which you could print. I've not tried this, it just occurred to me, but it should work...)

Yes... the cross-hairs thing occurred to me too.

I'm also reliably informed that you can now do this with Windows 7, but don't ask me how. :)

Get the tracklist on screen.

Press Print Scrn/SysRq button (above the curser keys).

Open any paint package.

Ctrl and V at the same time to paste.

Then edit the picture to size.

Print image or save.

I thought it was me..

...as since I upgraded to Snow Leopard and got the latest version of iTunes, I can't get it to burn a CD either. Toast works okay but won't include any music bought from iTunes. Anyone got any fixes?

Repair Permissions?

Haven't bothered upgrading to Leopard, let alone Snow Leopard, but as a general rule when newly installed or updated Mac software plays up you can't go far wrong with using the 'Repair Permissions' option in the 'Disk Utility' software (try 'Verify' first if you're nervous about it).

It used to be quite a common problem with 3rd party software in particular (yes, I'm looking at YOU eMusic) and the way Apple are going these days I'm not surprised if they've now started breaking their own stuff too.

Bobbins.

This hardly ever fixes things these days - it just wastes time. It may spot a whole bunch of supposed errors, but these will be transient files that have been re-written since installation, such as lock files, and are therefore benign.

It was needed back in the days when Macs could run Mac OS 9 either directly or via Classic, as that system couldn't didn't respect Mac OS X's permissions when modifying files. There were some Classic based installers that were particularly prone to cause problems.

Since then a repair is only needed if someone does something spectacularly stupid from a Terminal shell.

Calm down...

No need to get snippy about it. I did start by saying I'm not running the latest versions and it certainly won't do any harm that I'm aware of. As for wasting time, even my old Macs do it pretty quickly so that's not really an issue is it?

Since you appear to be in the know about the latest versions of OS X, how about some up to date useful advice instead?

Maybe stating the bleedin' obvious...

.. but all the tracks are checked and on the menu after you've hit print the first time "theme" is set to "single cover" isn't it?

I mention it because it stumped me for a couple of hours last week before I realised what a pillock I was!

Back to Square One or the black one to be specific!

Yep the problem still exists despite version 10.2.2 being out. Seeing as I started this thread I am beginning to wonder if Apple have decided that burning your own albums is counter productive to their empire.
Whenever any new version appears there is always that extensive preamble to click the 'Accept' button for access to the download. I just wonder if written in the small print was something to the effect that jewel case inserts would not be available as in previous versions.
Looks like it is back to downloading the album cover in Amazon to my pictures and then printing it at jewel case size.

EUREKA

The latest software update for itunes 10.5 arrived today and I can report that no black album sleeves are a feature. I can now revert to printing the actual album sleeve and tracks when I burn a cd of the relative album.
