Pretend you are talking to a moron

Steve Turner's picture

IT has never been my strong point. Whenever I see posts on here with Youtube clips I am irritated with myself because I dont know how to post them myself. I have a Mac - can someone please SLOWLY STEP BY STEP explain to me how I can participate in this function which is obviously pretty basic to the rest of you.
Cheers

Up the top of the page when you are looking at YouTube

is the URL ie a string of letters beginning with http:

Triple click so the whole URL is selected.

Hold down the command key and press C. You have now copied the URL.

Come back here and write your post. At the point where you want to insert the YouTube clip, hold down the command key and press V.

Hopefully the string of letters you copied will appear - you have pasted it in to the post.

You won't see the YouTube clip until you either preview or post your comment

Go to the page for the video you want on youtube

Copy everything in the address bit at the top of the page (the http//: bit) and then paste all of it into the post. No gubbins or anything...

Now pictures is a different matter. Lots of gubbins with them

Pictures is seemples.

1) Get yourself a free Divshare account. Er, at the Divshare website of course.

2) Save whatever piccy you want to share in your blog posting somewhere on your own PC/Mac.

3) Open your Divshare account and UPLOAD the picture from your PC/Mac.

4) When it's fully uploaded, open the Options list from the Divshare page and copy the relevant string of gobbledegook (you get several differently sized versions of the pic to choose from) from the Divshare Options pop-up into your Word blog posting.

5) Preview your blog posting to check you chose the right size. Done.

You could also use this bit of code

img src="(web address (full size image).jpg"
(with < and > at either end)

Another way

You can also go to the Youtube page with the video on that you wish to post, press the button marked "Embed" which is just below the video on the right hand side. This will bring up a text box containing the code you need. Copy this and paste it into your post.

That's the way

I do it too. Don't forget there are other video sharing sites as well, they offer the embed code but some use the a href tags which I believe shouldn't be posted but I edit them out anyway. Perhaps Fraser can enlighten us on this.

And don't forget...

...however you post them, to TYPE IN PLAIN TEXT WHAT THE VIDEO IS, so that anyone using a non-flash device can get the gist, even though the video may not appear.

Sorry, pet peeve of mine and many others.

Browser

I use a Mac but I am unable to embed Youtube vids on Safari so I have to use the Firefox browser.

Very odd

Embedding works fine on my Macs and this iPad.

stimpy | 16 October 2010 - 10:59am

Using

Safari?

0
jimmyshoes01 | 16 October 2010 - 11:02am

Definitely, no Firefox for me

The MacBook is running Tiger and the two Mac Pros in the studio are running Snow Leopard.

What's the problem when you try to embed in Safari?

0
stimpy | 16 October 2010 - 11:26am

It just

leaves the text as text and doesn't show the video.

0
jimmyshoes01 | 16 October 2010 - 12:14pm

Hmmm...

I've just copied this text (without the X's)

and this is how it renders

This is on a MacBook, running Tiger and Safari.

Same problem here

On an iMac + Safari I can't embed but I can use the url. Makes little sense to me!

I love that poster!

It's the way all the other band members just seem to be floating around Jeff Lynne, as if they are figments of his incredible imagination. Which of course, they were....

0
Iainso | 16 October 2010 - 2:15pm

Yes...

Creating their multi-layered Beatles homages in the musical "permament", if you will.

Patrick Crowther | 16 October 2010 - 2:24pm

I will,

0
Iainso | 16 October 2010 - 8:49pm
