Is your Newcastle...

... position based on them not being able to keep hold of their star players?

0
Formbyman | 23 April 2012 - 9:51am

This thread...

...was about the season we are now in. From last August.

0

Oh my god...

... I'm an idiot!!!

1
Formbyman | 23 April 2012 - 11:23am

It was

Nolan, Barton, Carroll and Enrique were considered their top players, and all disappeared within a short space of time.

I thought they were doomed but I couldn't have been more wrong! I'm glad to be wrong though 'cause Newcastle are a great club.

Alan Pardew and Graham Carr deserve major praise.

3
Spartacus Mills | 23 April 2012 - 4:31pm

Never mind the Toon

It's nice to see those four lovely lads fulfilling their long-cherished ambitions at their new clubs... er, hang on...

Schadenfreude, moi?

0
sage comme une image | 24 April 2012 - 8:36pm

In fairness

Carroll and Enrique have already won more trophies in their stuttering Liverpool careers than Newcastle have since the 60s.

And they're in another cup final in two weeks.

1
Spartacus Mills | 25 April 2012 - 9:17am

Well.....

Only two teams can win the wretched thing....so one of them will win it.
Tottenham will finish fifth or sixth.

And Arsenal will finish fourth.
No third.
No fourth.
No third.
No fourth.
No third.
No, as you were, fourth.

My only hope is that they prove as much of a basket-case as last season.
They are the true inheritors of Benny Hill's crown.

Of far more interest, I think Barnet and Dagenham will make the play-offs in Division 4.

Assuming Wenger signs a centre back (or two) by the deadline, top six:

1 Manchester United
2 Chelsea
3 Arsenal
4 Manchester City
5 Liverpool
6 Sp*rs

If he doesn't:

1 Manchester United
2 Chelsea
3 Manchester City
4 Liverpool
5 Arsenal
6 Sp*rs

(Even if he does sign someone, I still think we'll have 0 points at the start of Sept.)

Bottom Three:

18 Norwich City
19 Wigan Athletic
20 Swansea City

Championship, top three:

1. West Ham United
2. Leicester City
3. Nottm Forest (who will fail in the play-offs, again)

FA Cup: Chelsea

League Cup: Arsenal

Scotland: Celtic or Rangers (going out on a limb there)

Champions League: Barcelona

Euro 2012: Spain

Alex Carbon-Dioxide

Another signing to give grist to the anti-Wenger mill. We have enough tricky little fast guys with potential don't we?

However, I am pro-Wenger and do feel we are not as bad as people think. We should have Vermaelen all season; a sound keeper (he would be in the England squad pushing Hart hard); Nasri or Cesc (they won't both leave); Ramsey will be the new star alongside last year's star; we have got rid of Clichy who single-handedly lost us 4-6 points per season; Gervinho looks good; RvP looks fit; even Rosicky looks like he might be back to full form...

Nice to see ...

... you Arse boys have got big ambitions this season. The League Cup, get in there lads.

0
Johnny Topaz | 8 August 2011 - 9:42pm

Whatever

Whatever, Johnny.

We had a spectacularly crap season last season and still did better than your lot in every competition, except for the Champions' League in which we lost to the eventual winners by the odd goal in 7, instead of being humiliated 5-0 on average.

You carry on being ambitious. It must keep you warm at night.

0
Red Umpire | 8 August 2011 - 10:33pm

.. but I enjoyed my trip to the Emirates more than the San Siro. Younes ... get in.

Yes, it must have been nice to see something as rare as a Spuds win at Arsenal.

Putting all this to one side, if you're a resident of Tottenham, Johnny, I genuinely hope that you and yours haven't been affected by the looting.

I'm forecasting a repeat of 1993:

Norwich 3rd, QPR 5th; City, Arsenal and Chelsea to finish 9th 10th 11th..
(You may scoff, but is that Brett Anderson on the cover of The Word up there^)

The players' player of the year will be a high profile UK international at a top 4 club - Rooney, Gerard, Joe Hart, perhaps
The football writers' player of the year will be a media friendly foreign lad whose periodic flashes of skill in the Autumn sunshine endure in the memory. Strong chance he plays for a London club - Van Persie, Van Der Vaart, (fingers crossed) Adel Taarabt...

Norwich

A top ten finish is guaranteed!

0
Uncle Wheaty | 8 August 2011 - 8:12pm

I can't see much

beyond the usual suspects for the top 6.
Probably Man U/Chelsea for 1/2, and the split the rest.

The mighty Canaries will once again flirt with disaster. We'll get tagged as the plucky new kids who are going to go down, but no-one will want to visit Carrow Road. I reckon 4th off bottom, because it looks like Lambert's imbued them with some fighting spirit that previous relegation-bound teams have lacked. Might be goal difference at the end of the day.

kb | 8 August 2011 - 7:00pm

I reckon:

Top spot & runner-up will be either: Man Utd or Chelsea
Arsenal, Liverpool, Man City & Tottenham will contest the next 4 places
(predictable, but likely to be correct)

Bottom 3: Newcastle, Swansea & Norwich (Wolves & West Brom surviving on the last day of the season)

In the Championship - West Ham & Leicester promoted.
Reading to get to the Play Offs again, and hopefully this time return to the money pit of the Premier League

Arsenal

Winner of the sack race: that Chelsea bloke.

We're haven't had a weird year for ages, so...

1. Arsenal
2. Manchester City
3. Chelsea
4. Manchester United
5. Everton
6. Liverpool

Bottom 3: er, dunno - but three who were mid-table last year.

FA Cup: Spurs

Champions League: Borussia Dortmund

Europa League: Athletic Bilbao

0
Archie Valparaiso | 8 August 2011 - 10:54pm

Dortmund...

... is certainly a good outside bet. Klopp has worked wonders and he's also managed to secure Goetze on a long-term deal. The CL is going to be his priority next season.

0
Formbyman | 23 April 2012 - 9:55am

As a Norwich fan...

I can't be as adventurous as The Observer in predicting 12th place, but I think we can stay up. Just. If you offered me a repeat of the 2005 'Survival Sunday' position with everything being in our hands on the last day I'd take it right now. There is no way that what happened at Fulham (0-6) would be repeated at home to Aston Villa. For starters if half his midfield didn't turn up - because they were uncommitted loan players or already having eyes on a move to Wigan - as at Craven Cottage, I wouldn't want to face Paul Lambert in the dressing room at half- and full-time. He signs players he can trust and - unlike 2004/5 - actually uses them in their rightful position.
But if we were to go down, at least we'd be relegated having given it a go, unlike the often timid winless away form of 2004/5. PL's away league record at NCFC is 22 victories from 44 fixtures. I would fully expect us to win at least twice on the road in 2011/2.
Included in those 22 wins are the 5-0 at Colchester in 2010 and the 5-1 at Ipswich this year and given that PL knows his recent Norwich history and importance of key games I think, all things being equal, we will go to Craven Cottage on March 31 and win.
No, I believe Blackburn, QPR, Swansea and Wigan should have more to worry about than us.

1
honestman | 8 August 2011 - 11:10pm

I think you lot must be taking drugs

because I don't recognise half these teams. Top 4 in the Premiership:

1. Saracens
2. Northampton
3. Leicester
4. Bath

Relegation spot: Newcastle

Championship champions: Cornish Pirates

Cup: London Irish

European Cup: Toulose

David Sutherland | 9 August 2011 - 8:53am

I can't believe how serious you lot are

1. Liverpool. And The FA Cup, League Cup and Fair Play League
2. Norwich (as likely as the first)
3. Man Utd - ok, reality setting in now
4,5,6, Arsenal, Spurs, Chelsea in some order or t'other

Relegation
18. Man City. Come on, its City. There's bound to be drama, so...
19. Newcastle (another case of its bound to be drama)
20. QPR - but some things are predictable

Champion's League - Man City - told you its got to be drama(in this reality Barcelona or Real Madrid)
UEFA - Stoke. Wouldn't you just love it? Or Crvena zvezda. What a name, what a team. Imagine the commentry. Even HMHB couldn't sing songs about them. (sadly better known as Red Star Belgrade). In reality there are so many teams in the competition UEFA realise it has to be held over two overlapping years, so the winners will not be known until 2013. If ever.
Championship - Champions Ipswich, Promoted Leeds and Millwall. Policemen celebrate in the streets with the thought of all that overtime. Portsmouth initially win promotion but are deducted 20 points for having 19 different owners in one season, none of whom pay the leccy bill.
League 1 - Tranmere. And why not?
League 2 - AFC Wimbledon. Just so they can play MK Dons. With Crewe promoted because I like them.

European Championship. Spain. Or Germany. Because they are Spain and Germany. Certainly not England. Because we are England.

the Newcastle surge.
But surely points away for "Bottom Three - Who Cares?"

*edit* A further forecast:
Ireland will go to the Euros, get a win (v Italy) a draw and a defeat and come home as heroes.
England will go to the Euros, get a win a draw and a defeat and return to a reception of rotten tomatoes...

I see the League as a battle between City and United. I also have a feeling (I'll put it no stronger than that) that Wolves may be relegated. I'm afraid I regard Liverpool as no more than a cup team this year.
