Pre-ordering on iTunes? Is it madness or just me?

I just got an email from iTunes, inviting me to pre-order the forthcoming REM live EP.

Is it me, or is this madness? Are they limiting the number of downloads? Expecting their bandwidth to be swamped with demand? Might they run out of bits?

In the old days, I could understand pre-ordering a limited edition (although usually limited to the number they can sell) but in the age of digital, what precisely would the point be?

I see your point....

but i have to say now i have broadband, I do love to return to my battered old iMac and have it tell me i have a load of new Podcasts to listen to.
I could imagine, that if your really excited about a release, that the moment it's available you could have it in you sweaty little hands [or in this case you pristine hard drive] is something akin to 'record shops' opening at midnight, just so you can buy the lastest overhyped release by your fave artist!

...and you don't have to get out of bed!

More sales

It probably gets them a couple more sales. You might forget about it, not go back and buy, but if you can just charge it as soon as you see it advertised then it's another sale.

What does the EP consist of by the way?
