Postal Orders

Uncle Wheaty's picture

These are still a valid way of donating to Children in Need apparently.

When did you last buy or receive one of these?

I received a couple in the early days of ebay before PayPal was fully established but since then....nothing.

Before I had a bank account

I'm pretty sure I used to get one of these to apply for gig tickets by post. If memory serves, Cream's farewell concert tickets were purchased with said PO. As an aside, when I failed to get tickets for the reunion in 2005 I moaned to the RAH that it was easier 40 years ago to get tickets than in our new, brave, internet driven world.

Postal orders are such resonant things for me...

they remind me of applying for the Dennis the Menace Fan Club and other good things from my childhood.

Me too

My maternal grandmother would always send me a postal order on my birthday in the 1970s.

If and When

If and when cheques disappear (I think they've been given a stay of execution) then postal orders will be just about the only way of sending a payment through the post. I don't think there's any chance of them being discontinued any time soon. I can't remember how long ago it was that I last saw one though, it may well have been for ten shillings!

Could one of you fellows

loan me ten shillings until my postal order arrives.

Oh yes

I needed to pay for something but I didn't want it known it was me. You can pay for them in cash and that's that.

Dennis the Menace Fan Club..

..as mentioned by Patrick above was the last time I used one. One thing that always confused me was the business about them being 'crossed'. What was all that about?

Crossed

If it is the same as crossed cheques it means that it must be paid into a bank account, and cannot be cashed across the counter.

Gone the way of the SAE

I fear

And, possibly..

..cheques. Can't recall the last time I used one of those either, though I do remember my first chequebook - a Nat West one with pictures of wildlife on it.

Hang on, I'm starting to sound like my Dad.

There are still over 1 million

people in the UK who don't have/can't get a bank account.

We're off to Egypt soon

The only payment accepted for an Egyptian visa is a postal order, until two weeks ago I thought they'd stopped doing them, but the woman in the Post Office assures me she sells at least 5 a year.

pay on the door

There are little booths at the airports where you can buy a visa for £10 or $15 in Eqypt. Usually next to a money changer for convenience.
If you are going to Sharm El Sheikh you dont need a visa unless you wish to visit real Eqypt (and you need to decide that on arrival as I dont think you can change your mind later). Sorry if you alreay know all that.

Cheers Paul

We're calling in a few times while cruising, the cruise firm insist we have all necessary visas prior to travelling, other than obtaining a postal order Egypt was a doddle, now Indian visas, don't get me started....
