Post-rock achievers!

Over at the Rocking Vicarage, a parish appeal has been launched to find out about the post-rock careers of some of our long-forgotten "stars". You may know that Sonny Bono was a member of the US Congress and Jon King from Gang Of Four is the CEO of a media company, but did you know that Viv Albertine from the Slits (far left) is a TV director? Or that Amelia Fletcher from Sarah Records indie band Tallulah Gosh is now a senior economist at the Office Of Fair Trading? More please!

Great stories! We'll...

Great stories! We'll be running some of them in our August issue, in response to my post-rock achievers piece, which will be in the new issue of Word, out next week...

Talulah Gosh were filled with high achievers - Amelia's drumming late brother Matthew worked for the OED, guitarist Peter Momtchiloff is a senior commissioning editor for the Oxford University Press, bassist Rob Pursey is a TV producer and their follow-up band Heavenly's keyboard player Cathy Rogers fronted and produced Scrapheap Challenge and later became creative director at RDF Media in LA.

Oh, and Lauren Laverne's Kenickie partner in banter Marie du Santiago now works for the Arts Council.

as we are usually informed by the sporadic pieces in The Guardian by their former co-manager cum self conscious novelist Kev(in) Sampson, ex Farm members are thriving in the entertainment industry for a change. Carl Hunter( bass) has just directed a film set in the allotments of Liverpool, Roy Boulter (drums) is a scriptwriter and the rest still clip tickets on the grrrroovy train. Anything to stop them making music(sic)

Stephen Morris of New Order has apparently been down the dole office and been told he has no skills suitable for employment. What do the lesser stars DO after a decade of living out the back of a transit van?
Husker Du seem to have a varied employment history - Bob Mould used to write the scripts for wrestling shows in the US (yes, they have scripts).
And of course we know what happened to the guys from Ugly Rumours...

Until recently Mr Phil Wilson from The June Brides was a high ranking Civil Servant at, I think, the tax office - he was a BRAIN behind recent environmental tax changes, but earlier in the year gave it all up and now lives in Devon.

Slightly off-topic I know, but I've heard from several sources that Richard Gibson, who played Herr Flick of the Gestapo in piss-poor sitcom 'Allo 'Allo, later became a freelance sub-editor working the magazine circuit. If it's true, I wonder how many times the poor sod has had to pretend to be amused by Chief Subs ordering him to "Proof-read zis now or I vill have you shot!', etc...

Gaye Advert also worked for a time in William Hills thought this is going back a bit. I worked for them as well during the summers and she was featured in the staff magazine.

Those Bonzos who didn't become solo performers (Neil and Viv) went on to become art lecturers, but Rodney Slater worked for a long time as a social worker and family therapist, whilst keeping his hand in at music.

I heard that Gaye Advert from The Adverts is a social worker these days. Wasn't Dave Gregory of XTC a bread delivery man for a period when he was between sessions? Andrea Bud from the Darling Buds works with a music project for kids in Newport. For years I wondered whatever had become of the mighty Lawrence from Felt but then I read Will Hodgkinson's 'Song Man' and all was revealed. I won't spoil it for you. ( But it sounds pretty grim ).

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe John Illsley, formerly of Dire Straits, has interests in a public house and is a keen painter.

I recalled that Grant Hart out of Husker Du had become a chef. Sadly, it seems that he has reverted to type and taken up art and/or music again. Shame. I'd love to have seen a series called The H Word. Lawrence Donegan, one time Commotion, and co-author of the splendid "Andy's Babies", is now The Guardian's golf correspondent. Where's Lloyd Cole now, eh?
