Poptastic Smash Hit Of The Year

I realise that not all the gang have quite as sweet a musical tooth as I do (and that I am in fact a 14 year old girl trapped inside the body of a 44 year old man) but this record is fabulous in every respect: the name of the act (Little Jackie), what she looks like, the title of the song (“The World Should Revolve Around Me”), the lyrics, the video. Not one for the RT crowd perhaps, but I think it’ll be the smash hit of the summer.

not good

I'm sorry Richard but that's S***E. Bring back MC Miker G and DJ Sven.

paul beard | 17 July 2008 - 9:53pm

No need to apologise Paul

Each to his (or her in my case) own. I‘d buy shares in it though.

Richard Lowe | 17 July 2008 - 10:01pm

Speaking

as one of the "RT crowd", I bloody loved it! What a great start to the day. Thank you, Richard. I'm going to listen again now....

So-so song, but nice happy vid

...particularly liked the bit where she made a couple of trees grow in a matter of seconds. Would she be interested in a part-time gardener job?

Regarding the bit in brackets, in the first line of your post, it's a good job it wasn't the other way round, or Mr.Plod might be seeking your assistance with his enquiries at this very moment...

Paul Vincent | 18 July 2008 - 7:35am

Rosie Perez?

Is that her at 1:50? Like the song by the way, imagine it sounds great in the car on a sunny day - though not with the kids in the back saying 'what will he be screwing the bitch down the way to Dad?'.

Mike Todd | 18 July 2008 - 8:20am

I like

Great stuff, girls with afros, beats, cathcy tune, what's not to like.

But you claim to have trapped a 14-year-old girl. You're not Austrian are you?

Niks | 18 July 2008 - 8:24am

Ohmigod

Austrian?!?! That is just like so not true. LOL.

Richard Lowe | 18 July 2008 - 8:36am

What

a refreshing change from the Word blog norm. Mind you I don't like Randy Travis much (LOL? - no I thought not).

Sven | 18 July 2008 - 6:15pm

In the Neighbourhood

Catchy song, great vid. It reminded me of this classic from New Zealand in 1994, two teenage girls who called themselves "Sisters Underground". It's the best of Pacific pop-rap, with a languid Polynesian swing to it, an irresistible hook, and a terrific video that really shows what South Auckland is like beyond the stylised violence of "Once Were Warriors": it's a neighbourhood, where people dress up for church, communicate on the street, graffiti the walls, and enjoy the climate whatever the adversity. It always puts a smile on my face. BTW Alan Jansson the producer who plays the simple guitar riff later worked on 'How Bizarre', the other great moment of this genre. The video is by Kerry Brown, now based in the UK.
Sisters Underground were two South Auckland friends from different parts of the Pacific, I think one was actually from Hawaii. They never made another record.

School's out for summer

It's always good to have some music that evokes the magical summers of childhood. The Go! Team do it for me. Like a brilliant school project, seemingly from NYC circa '82, on the verge of collapse but done with huge verve and sincerity. Not very well served by YouTube, but here's "Ladyflash" from 2006:

Schools out and the kids are dreaming

That Go Team vid’s a cracker. Never heard it before. Thanks for posting.

And now for something completely different.
Archie cracks on that the view from his gaff looks like this. I think he’s having us on and really lives next to a gasworks in Kidderminster.
First day of the school summer holidays - a great time of year. The fantasy summer will never actually pan out, but that’s not the point is it.

Richard Lowe | 19 July 2008 - 9:22am

oh richard richard richard!

Haven't you picked up the first Go Team album? Right up your street if, like me, you've an occasional weakness for unabashed pop. The manifesto is simple - loud and fun. Samples abound all over the shop and it's really quite life affirming. LadyFlash, which the previous poster put up is a higlight, but really, the whole album is wonderful fun.

I'm rarely one to get evangelical about an album to a complete stranger, but pick it up.

Hell if you don't like it, mail me and i'll send you the fiver it cost you!

ivan | 19 July 2008 - 3:19pm

Ordered it, Ivan

Might I draw your attention to the new single by Solange, Beyonce’s little sister. It’s called “I Decided” and it’s on youtube (with embedding disabled). The retro thing is getting a bit tiresome (this one uses that stomp from the Supremes’ “Where Did Our Love Go”) but this single is brilliant.

Richard Lowe | 20 July 2008 - 9:12am

It is great but...

.. does your copy sound like it's being played through a tin can? Mine does.

Niks | 21 July 2008 - 9:13am

like a tin can full of

plastecine and Meccano, actually...

I've seen plenty of folks on Amazon complain about the production, but to be honest i've not noticed. On the other hand, Niks, my mate who recommended it to me *told* me that it was gonna be noisy, and not the clean/clinical production you'd expect.

ivan | 21 July 2008 - 4:52pm

If we're doing songs that should have been summer hits....

...this came out years ago. It's General Johnson and Joey Ramone doing "Rockaway Beach". This video's got a very long caption at the beginning so you have to be a little patient but it's a wonderful record.

David Hepworth | 19 July 2008 - 10:12am

The General's Finest Moment

Not the best video but What a song.

paul beard | 19 July 2008 - 11:13am
Springer Bell | 19 July 2008 - 11:55am

Actually this should have been Massive

as a Summer hit .......

Don't laugh

Springer Bell | 19 July 2008 - 11:58am

Speaking of Summer hits that never were ...

The video is a little too 'Shiny / Happy', and they appear to have raided the Split Enz dressing up box, but I love the song. Not sure where they are now

Steven C | 19 July 2008 - 2:13pm

Both song and video superb and reminds me of summer.

'Ping Pong' and 'Fluorescences' would also fit the bill.

Scott Wilkinson | 21 July 2008 - 3:06am

And

"Lo Boob Oscillator" too!

Nick White | 21 July 2008 - 6:24am

That summer feeling is gonna fly

Very late entry: if this had been released in June it would have been my sound of the summer. It's my sound of the autumn instead.
