Pop top five

Paul Cunningham's picture

Today (probably because I've been reading the PSB albums thread) I've decided my four favourite pop acts are Pet Shop Boys, The Beatles, Girls Aloud and Abba. They're the acts to go back to, time and time again, when I just want a 'pure pop' rush.
But I need another act to round the thought off and make it a pop top five. Who should it be?

Haircut 100 and Haircut 100 equals pop. Just the one album though but it does tick every conceivable pop box

Hmmmm...

I'm a huge Girls Aloud fan but I think they're one of the only contemporary pop groups that give me the 'rush' you describe. Mirrors have their moments:

(Apparently, they did the '1-2-3-4-5' in this song without even realising it's a tad 'Senses Working Overtime'. Thank God it's clearly a different tune.)

Rewinding a bit, a lot of my favourite 'pop' bands had a heavy dose of gloominess that rules them out of making the Top 5 in the OP (groups like OMD and Ultravox).

So my vote is for Wham! Embarrassingly large number of great tunes given they were together for no time at all.

FOW

If you want pure pop then you don't have to look any further than the variety and quality of the Fountains Of Wayne. They are always my first chice if I just want some pop.

How can they be anyone's favourite group?

Sorry, I just don't get it with them. I prefer Middle Of The Road.

And there's your fifth.
